It's pretty cool that Ikkaku's zanpakuto has a non-combat ability as its "true" "special" power, just like Yumechika's. I think this foreshadows something about Ikkaku's bankai not being fully revealed. Maybe the blades are meant to be brittle and he actually gains something by losing them. Maybe when his blades are fully destroyed his healing ointments are released into his blood, causing him to instantly heal from any injury, while his bankai's ability to infinitely raise its power flows into him instead of the blades. There is a databook stating Ikkaku's bankai could theoretically surpass Yamamoto, if only for an instant, if given enough time to charge. Maybe his bankai is meant to be used like giant nunchakku; maybe they become smaller and more dense when he learns its true name.

They were foreshadowed just fine, sure, but my problem is that their introductions were rushed and a bit wasted. We needed a flashback chapter showing major character breakthroughs for Hitsugaya and Zaraki; as well as a background chapter on Gerard. Maybe show Gerard as a mere organ of the Soul King and show like three panels of the SK living in his prime, then show how Gerard spent centuries cold and alone waiting for a body, then how he made friends and became the heart of his group of sternritters during the original war; idk something. The whole arc was rushed. That's the root of the issue. The work should be much more dense. Bleach should have tons of novels to help with the narrative and offer exposition. Hitsugaya's and Zaraki's bankais should have had more substantial effects on Gerard. They should have been pivotal to his defeat rather than just slowing him down; or at least EMPHASIZE how important it was to stall Gerard so that not defeating him didn't feel cheap. Granted Kubo made it a plot point that Gerard was an existential threat to SS; that he'd destroy seireitei just by falling from the palace. But to me he only did the bare minimum and it's just not enough. It's like if Ichigo's first hollow "could have hurt someone" instead of breaking his house and holding his sister's limp body in its hand and then wrecking Rukia.

I prefer it this way as well, it keeps the mystery instead of going the basic a** route of just slapping all the information right in the readers face with Flashback information dumps. We get precisely what the characters know even if those informations might even be wrong, the character just didn‘t know better. Like hitsugaya anf his bankai or the ritual that ends up sending souls into hell, the characters just weren‘t aware of that so why should we be? Giving out information for nothing is boring since it would take away all the theorising. You‘d just get the knowledge from 3rd person flashbacks instead of it being revealed later on after subtle foreshadowing

@@abominationdesolation8322 Toshiro was fine the way it worked. Kenpachi DID kind of go from no Zanpakuto to Shikai to Bankai in a very fast pace... so, I guess there could be a bit more there, but I think it's rather fitting for Kenpachi to go too far too fast and get himself hurt in the process. The issue isn't with the individual reveals but, as you said, the pacing of the overall arc. Kubo's health problems certainly didn't help matters but understanding the 'why' behind a problem doesn't actually help things. Most of the things that take place in the back half of TYBW actually make logical sense... it's just that a lot of it isn't built up or explored the way it should have been due to how rushed it all became.

Kaido mainly restores a person's energy and forces their body to replenish itself more quickly than usual. For someone like Zaraki who is like a mountain of reishi, it was probably his own body healing itself that fast due to having the reishi holes (cuts) plugged. So yes and no. Unohana could heal other people just as fast but it would take her more effort since their bodies aren't as powerful. Remember, skin has to be divided from existing skin cells; the magic can only multiply what's already there. Otherwise healing magic would cause everyone to heal back with the same DNA; it wouldn't even match their skin tone. Their bodies might even reject such a thing.

Also I think the freshness of the wounds are a factor. AND it may be easier for Unohana to heal wounds that she herself has caused. Remember when Orihime had trouble rejecting the reishi storm around the wound Ulquiorra left on Ichigo? I think it's similar for Unohana. She needs a little more time when dealing with wounds caused by exotic reishis. But shinigami reishi, especially her own, is very simple.

When he says "not you... or me..." it seems to imply Aizen is special like Ukitake. Hikone/Gremmy may be the "brain" of the SK; but who is to say Aizen isn't the "mind" or perhaps the "spine" of the SK? Maybe he's the "loin"? In the myth of Osiris, the god is cut into many pieces by his angry brother Set, and all but his genitals are found. It sounds vulgar but I could see Bleach riff on it from a symbolic and mythological appreciation perspective.

@@abominationdesolation8322 I think it just comes down more to Aizen believing in his inherent superiority. Him having a god complex is pretty much the basis for his character, so comparing himself to the on Shinigami literally housing a god fits.

@@lo4tr Usually there is some fate-based reason as to why someone in particular is transcendent. I'd say evolving with the hogyoku was just part of Aizen's destiny. To me it's clear there is a divine aspect going on. Just as every fullbringer has a piece of the soul king, and powerful lieutenants (who could have been captain) like Rangiku are born with them too. I believe Aizen was either born with a divine fragment... or... a speculative theory of mine is that the shinigami are living in a small pond, and the SK was an incarnation of a god who exists on higher planes than shinigami do. I think the Soul King is based on the myth of Ameterasu sending her grandson and 5 guardian deities (the 5 noble family heads) to rule the Earth. When she finds out the nobles betrayed her grandson, I think there might be a war on Soul Society. But we have a Hell arc to do first and it's dubious if Kubo has even considered such a thing.

I think it simply requires more than just brute force, which is why Kenpachi would be unable to do so in his current state. I think of it like an Aizen situation, where the characters don't have the current means to be able to bypass the immortality aspect.

Actually, I think the cross itself got stronger each time Gerard came back to life and by the time kenpachi cut Gerard in half Kenpachi had made Gerard's cross too strong for even himself

That line about how Uryu should be stronger than him --- seems to imply Uryu was already sternritter level before the war started and Ichigo just never noticed. Ichigo was so high on his own horse that he didn't notice Uryu jump from lieutenant to super captain, since Ichigo was already above all that. Remember when Uryu did better against Ulquiorra than Ichigo did? That was foreshadowing; not bad scaling. I'd like to add that the alien-like density of Ulquiorra's reiatsu may have played a role in amping up Uryu's own abilities. But Uryu is impressive for being able to *control* that alien level of power and stay calm in a near death situation at the same time. Truly a wonderful character.

Quilge's line makes sense even without having any personal connections to Sokken, and given the prevailing theory about Quilge at the moment is that he was a member of Yhwach's original army from 1000 years ago, he'd be more than 20 times older than Sokken so it would make no sense for him to have been taught by his junior.

Kubo placing her so low seemed like he didn't think much about it himself. Either he just excluded her features from First Invasion out of equation, or he meant her zombified version. Because it contradicts with what was shown in both manga and anime. She was giving Komamura a hard time during First Invasion, rushing in melee with a sword. And had enough strength to cross blades with him. Judging her melee power simply by hand-to-hand isn't right, since most quincies don't fight hand-to-hand anyways. And her Blut rank is downright nonsensical. Giselle can't use Blut even to save herself and gets pierced by basic Kensei. But Bambietta, who got hit by both Komamura's bankai and her own explosions, and got away with minor injuries, is somehow weaker in Blut?

@@Prushinthespirit​​⁠​⁠​⁠​⁠Giselle probably doesn’t much opt to protect himself with Blut given the fact that his power if anything plays into taking attacks. Bambietta on the other hand could simply be more skillful with it, but with a less raw potent Blut - which could still end up in a lower rank, since it seems Kubo meant overall instead of just raw potency or skill alone. As for the hand-to-hand ranking, it’s important to remember that hand-to-hand is actually a term used for fighting close quarters in any way, so that could include swords or other close range weaponry as well. That said, uh, yeah I disagree with the rank too because if anything she seemed to be one of the better general close combatants of the Bambis.

@@blankname2445 Giving a stats for "Blut Proficiency" is completely pointless though if said stat only reflects technical skill regardless of the resulting power. Giselle's Blut was so weak that literally everyone who ever hits her with anything cut through her like paper, while Bambietta has the mentioned feat of tanking Kommamura's bankai + her own explosions to the face and surviving fully intact and only really getting knocked down. Remember when Hollowfied Tousen took "just" Kommamura's bankai and it crinkled his left arm like paper?

@@officiallyjan8596 Proficiency does mean skill though, so if it was taken at a literal face value it’s entirely possible Bambietta could be less skillful with Blut. Could be as simple as Giselle having exceptionally skillful use of the attack-type Blut, or simply refusing to use it defensively due to his Schrift power making it somewhat pointless to avoid 99% of injuries while focusing on attack power to play into his strengths. Then again I don’t think we know if any of the Bambis knew how to use Blut Arterie or not. If it’s accounting for a balance between potency and skill, I presume Giselle allows himself to get hurt but actually has the potency like I said above and uses it for the offensive Blut. Or maybe Bambietta is just really poor in skill but has exceptional potency, which still falls behind. It’d probably help if we knew whether Kubo meant the literal definition of proficiency or the general term of overall ability.

That makes sense, but originally I thought it was always strange that whenever they were in Karakura town, Isshin was NEVER anywhere to be found, not even in filler. I thought Isshin might be avoiding them, but them realizing and wanting to keep it hidden was probably for the best. Considering Isshin was a captain 20 years before the start of Ichigo’s adventures, its likely that all the other soul reapers wouldve immediately recognized him and blew his cover.

If he didn't want to be found, who are they to go against his wishes? Also, the rest of Kubo's answer states that Hitsugaya was among the crew who came to help Ichigo in the Lost Agent arc because of this.

Who would his wife be, though? Nel or Hallibel? Or some other female arrancar?

@@Zac_Frost Him and Nel seem the most likely. It is hinted in the CFYOW novels that Grimmjow likes her company and that Hallibel thinks Nel would be a good influence on Grimmjow.

Seeing as the identity, shape, ability and name of a zanpakutou is a reflection of the wielder's core as a person, I think it makes sense at face-value that similar individuals may develop zanpakutou with the same-or-similar shapes, abilities or names in general.

Mayuri is the one who's known for his invention of drugs, devices and careful preparations to develop counter measures and turn enemy's strength against himself. While himself lacking supernatural speed, strength or power level. So, he's the Batman here. Comparing Urahara to Mr. Fantastic would be more appropriate.

It's frustrating trying to fit the RG into the timeline... everyone but Hikifune plays such a pivotal role in the formation of soul society that I can't see them being anything less than general tier even back during the first gotei. As for Kirinji, his baths aren't exactly pivotal and his healing maybe isn't as iconic as the zanpakuto, but the narrative does seem to put him as someone who is superior to Unohana; who by her name Kenpachi should be the 1st or 2nd strongest captain of the originals. Meaning Kirinji was already above the station of captain if he wasn't one of the original gotei. It doesn't make sense to me that he would become the captain of squad 4 when he would likely already be a RG. But then it begs the question: who else has been promoted from gotei to RG besides Hikifune? Did Hikifune replace a previous, or the original, RG member of her palace city? I assume there have always been 5 RG just as there have always been 5 founding noble clans. Kyoraku implied RG was a promotion from captain which implies Hikifune is not the first. But maybe she is; or maybe she's only the second to do so, including her predecessor? Or perhaps the previous iterations of the royal guard existed before shihakushos and even zanpakutos? A million years is a long time. The SK for example doesn't wear a shihakusho; nor does he have a zanpakuto. Curious, no?

@@abominationdesolation8322 Kirinji was the one who created kaido (healing Kido) while Kirio made Gikon (artificial soul), not Mod Souls like Kon but those like Chappy. The Royal guard are made of people who created the soul society’s history. Ichibe was the first to obtain Bankai and is millions of years old, and Oetsu is likely just as old having made the Zanpakuto. Considering Senjumaru seems to directly know Yama, she can probably be stated to be a couple thousand years old. She also made the shihakusho, and from what it looks like, it’s highly possible that people were wearing them since way long before the war. Yama and Chojiro are about 2k years old, and if they were wearing shihakushos way back then, then she’s also over 2k (and similarly, Mayuri…). She was likely promoted before the war 1k years ago. As I stated earlier, I believe that Kirinji replaced Chikiri, and then because of his promotion, Unohana took his position and formed the healing corps. Kirio, well we saw her promotion was 100 years ago. I also believe that Yama likely would have been promoted since he was the one who made the Gotei 13 and Shin’o Academy, but because he was the one leading the criminals as head captain as its highest authority, he couldn’t just be promoted like that so easily

@@abominationdesolation8322 There is no set base or limit to the Royal Guard. They are chosen to ascend because they created something pivotal to the history of the Soul Society. Ichibei would have been alone in his tenure until Nimaiya came along. Senjumaru would have come next, as you see the Shikausho being worn by Shinigami even before the first Quincy war. Tenjiro followed, having been the creator of Kaido and teaching it to Unohana sometime after the Quincy war, when she grew bored with fighting and wanted to prolong her victims suffering. The thing about those four is that none of them would have been established as Court Guard members, because Yamamoto wouldn't have recruited them. Senjumaru is a weaver and Tenjiro is a healer. Yamamoto was only looking for brutes to use in his forces. Kirio came along later after the Court Guard had been established and was the only one directly promoted from her station. It's slightly wonky due to not having direct dates on a lot of things, but nothing directly contradicts the established canon.

Unohana is a perfect example, and we’ve seen Tenjiro fight also. Plus, keep in mind that Tenjiro was once well known in the soul society as Lightning Fast Tenjiro

Grimmjow’s fracion are the first I believe. Edrad, Shawlong and Illfort all use their resurrection forms when fighting Hitsugaya and the others in the early parts of the Arrancar arc

Ō'etsu probably is quite ancient because both Yamamoto and Chojuro were using Shikai and Bankai over 2000 years ago like that was normal. With regards to Senjumaru, her comments imply she's over 1000 years old, but I think her induction into the Zero Division happened much later.

@@MrGksarathy They're old for sure, but not as old as shinigami existence itself. In CFYOW, it's stated that Yamamoto fought Ikomikidomoe with bare hand. Then Oetsu sealed it in a sword. This is probably the start of Zanpakuto existence.

@@Lilac_31 The way CFYOW worded it, it seems to me that the concept of a Zanpakuto predated Ikomikidomoe, but maybe the evolved Zanpakuto/Shinuchi/Bankai hadn't been invented yet. Also, Yama never fought Ikomikidomoe, Ichibei did. He also stripped its name and renamed it.

@@MrGksarathy Yamamoto fought it but lost. That's how Ikomikidomoe ended up fighting Ichibei, just like Yhwach. Either way, Zanpakuto isn't as old as Shinigami.

Ichigo's Shikai is a constant release so it doesn't have a shikai release command.
