This November I participated in the NaNoWriMo challenge to write 50,000 words of a novel in the course of the month, and I succeeded - and ended up with a completed (if rough) first draft of a novel! In this video, I get into what my writing stats for the month were and my five main takeaways: the one significant mistake I made, and the four strategies that were most helpful for writing this much in a single month.

Congrats on first draft! Just randomly stumbled on your channel. The algorithm must be working, cause I too am trying to get back into writing. Loved it so much as a kid and I’m going back and picking up all the hobbies Little Me did. Plus I’ve also got long red curly hair. Nice to see someone else with it :) good luck with the dissertation!

Oh wow you were BUSY in November!! I loved this video. You're super inspiring!! I'm a very slow writer, but like you I have loved writing since I was a child. This was positively invigorating to watch!!

Great video!! I love takeaway #3. Been listening to this in the background as I work and it’s very inspiring.

I have been listening to that Amy Winehouse episode! Love 'You're Wrong About'! I have also been thinking about what I wanted to do when I was younger, so I related hard to this. Interesting to hear your experience, as someone who also likes structure. I find the Pomodoro method really useful as well.

Thanks! I have to say though (and I promise this is not false modesty) I only write first drafts so quickly because my first drafts are sooo messy and not very well written! After reading back what I wrote for this project, I’ve been tempted just to scrap the whole thing, because this draft needs so much editing before it becomes anything decent or coherent… still though, it’s fun to have accomplished a complete first draft of any quality!

Love the Video Congrats on the Victory A couple questions!! How long did you work on your outline for? I know you said you toss'd out a fair amount of it. Love rule #5, biggest one I struggle with. "No going back to fix the things, I didn't like about the earlier chapters!" The idea after you finish the first draft, give it at least 2 weeks, before you return to that universe with fresh eyes, also solid.

Thanks! I spent about a week and a half writing the outline after a very productive three-hour bus ride daydreaming up most of the plot 😂 I definitely had some trouble sticking to my resolution to just go forward without looking back - I have to admit I did go back a couple times! But sticking to the structure as much as possible definitely helped!

Congrats! You beat the midmonth curse! I stopped at week 3 after an intense 25k sprint while drawing a comic, for then to shift to another outline to clock in total 35k.. Next year, it'll be in the bag. What ought to be said in getting greedy and overshoot the 1666 daily early i n the challenge, is allow the hands to stop and to quit while ahead, then switch to note taking if you see the beats or details, then go at it the day after, having the brain reset. I mistake I saw myself do was to take a whole lot of notes after the fact while expanding it with thoughts and beats that had yet to be written before the writing took place, and after capping the 2100 mark. Spending time rehashing and explaining it too took time and energy out to do the daily. Good luck with the editing!

35k is a huge achievement, congrats! I definitely understand the urge to expand and annotate midway through - sometimes I worry that all the seemingly brilliant ideas I have in the drafting process are going to evaporate when I return for revisions. Which, honestly, they might... but I find that just for myself, the risk of losing those ideas and plans is worth the exchange of having a semi-completed first draft, first drafts are just so daunting for me. Good luck with your continued work on your project!!

Thx for this process description. Just another question: What is the keyboard Your are using? I saw it at 00:05. Is it comfortable to type on?

It's the Logitech ergonomic keyboard! I love it, the shape of it is meant to allow your hand to be in a more natural resting position and reduce the strain of typing. I have a repetitive stress injury in my hand that can be aggravated by typing and using the ergonomic keyboard has made a big improvement for me!
