Is there really a big debate about what’s better? I always thought 300 blackout was just a better choice for A.R. pistols while 556 was a better choice for A.R. 15‘s with a longer barrel. IMO They are two different rounds for two completely different purposes
@tsuobachi
@tsuobachi 4 года назад
In rifles, it doesn't matter how long the barrel is, 300 AAC is always the better round for penetration and energy and 5.56/.223 will always win in velocity. The reason 300 blackout got a reputation for being a short barrel cartridge is because it outperforms in short barrels, but it also outperforms in longer barrels. That's just ballistics at work. The maximum benefit of 300 blackout is actually at 18" barrel lengths, although at 16" you're getting pretty close. Obviously 300 blackout is one of the best pistol/carbine options, but the reason to choose 300 or 5.56/.223 for a rifle isn't barrel length, but whether you want tumbling. 5.56/.223 tumble and are going to do larger wound cavities but with less penetration (especially barrier penetration), but 300 AAC is going to penetrate more and create more hydrostatic shock. If all you care about is penetration then 300 blackout takes a back seat to .308 (7.62x51) and 7.62x39. If overpenetration is a concern like it is for most people concerned with home defense, then the penetration of 300 blackout in a longer barrel becomes a potential problem, which is why bullpups and pistols are so popular for home defense in 300 blackout. But it's not because it's a worse round in longer barrel lengths, it's because it's so much better that it becomes a problem with overpenetration.
@thomasautengruber8369
@thomasautengruber8369 4 года назад
tsuobachi great explanation, thank you!
@kaleniemiec3103
@kaleniemiec3103 4 года назад
I would also like to add some details. 5.56 was designed for longer barrels to achieve high velocity thus giving the 5.56 good tumbling and yawing characteristics. Unless you stick to 55 grain ammo with a barrel length of 16” or more you won’t capitalize on those wound characteristics. 300 blackout is a great round. Especially in SBRs. To me it has superior ballistics within 200 yards. 5.56 from a 16” ballistically lacks compared to a 300 blackout from a 16” barrel. The 300 has 1) more kinetic energy and 2) more inertia thus more penetration. With the right ammo each performs very well. Stick to anything less then 115 grains with the 300 blackout. Something like a v-max performs insanely.
@wakichunu
@wakichunu 4 года назад
id say the 300 blackout is more versatile. Its best for hunting or self defense with subsonic and suppressor, but still competes well as supersonic for velocity and penetration.
@wakichunu
@wakichunu 4 года назад
@antiami nothing AAC is the company that developed it
@ArchHades
@ArchHades 4 года назад
I don't get the 300 Blackout haters. The cartridge was basically designed so we could shoot 30 caliber bullets out of an AR-15 platform. So we could have AR-15s that ballistically operate like an AK-47, and it only takes very minimal effort for the switch over. Just change out the upper and voila you've got an AR-15 that shoots like an AK-47. I own 3 AR-15s and 1 of them is of course chambered in 300 Blackout. If you're going to own only 1 AR-15, get it chambered in the usual 556/223. But if you buy a 2nd, get a 300 BLK.

Honestly haven't shot much 7.62x39. I like how cheap the ammo is tho
@rew78901
@rew78901 4 года назад
I HV COMPARED: HERE's WHY I REALLY DONT LIKE IT... 1) SHOOTS CHEAP "STEEL CASE" ONLY. INTERESTINGLY - NO QUALITY BRASS CASE FOR IT! THIS MATTERS TO ME... 2) ALL THE AMMO FOR IT IS BASICALLY SAME - "ICE PICK" EFFECT, NOT LIKE THE BETTER 300BLKOUT THAT "SHATTERS" & DEVASTATES LIKE A 55gr. 5.56! SO - OVERALL - THE 300 - ACTUALLY "MORE" not "LESS" EFFECTIVE THAN 7.62... HENCE: I LIKE IT!
@ArchHades
@ArchHades 4 года назад
@@stanjelinek62 I like 7.62x39 a lot. That's why I like 300 Blackout/7.62x35, because ballistically it's extremely similar. 300 Blackout was designed to have the same casing as 223, thus 300 blackout is essentially designed for the AR-15 platform and regular AR-15 lowers.

It really isn’t even close enough to compare unless you’re just wanting to see exactly how much more the 6.5 is going to penetrate than the 300 BO. Hint: The difference will be bigger than the 5.56 vs 300

I'm aware of the ballistics, but it's still fun to see a visual to go along with it. That's the same reason he has done 30-06 vs 30-30 vs 270 ECT. Wow the 300 went waaaay deeper. However it’s the difference of being stabbed with a spear and stabbed with a chunk of rebar. Both are bad but the wide blades spear is probably worse. In either case both are super bad especially at bad breath distance.

Coach PlyoGuy right. If you’re gonna go 300 then after you get done with the FMJ at the range, I’d load up some sort of soft or hollow points for HD. Then again, I’d do the same for 5.56, so I guess it’s a wash

The argument of should I use 5.56 or .300 Blackout ALWAYS results in the same way. The answer is YES. The only functional comparison one can make is 5.56 grain in its own caliber vs other grain, composition and need, then .300 aac the same or vice versa. This is ALWAYS an answer being more dynamic than the question.

The 556 made a bigger hole and started looking nasty after the first 300 plates because it started tumbling sooner. The 300blk stayed keyhole at that point because the higher velocity was still punching through plates like butter.

This was an awesome test WTW. Those 223/5.56 55 grain fmj's are pretty nasty for a .22 caliber bullet. What would be interesting to see, is different barrel lengths. I bet a 20" would yield less penetration only because that projectile would fragment even faster. A 10.5" barrel should get more penetration. Those are just my theories though, lol.

Always fun stuff. I’m learning a lot watching this channel and am thankful for your great videos. Another genre of rifle are the numerous muzzleloaders, their projectiles and powders. I’ve been hunting small game with a .32 flintlock for years and having a ball. Daniel Boone used a .32 as a kid. A few thoughts for your show: why was each caliber invented, and how much of a recoil (In pounds) does each caliber have? Should we consider the weight of the weapon and it’s force of recoil vs. the size of game, the distance to carry the weapon, and the number of times you discharge a weapon. Does the weight of a weapon lessen recoil? How much does a stock spring reduce recoil? As much as I love my 45-70, I don’t want to fire off two boxes of ammo in a day.

This was basically .45 vs 9mm but with spritzer-shaped hypersonic rifle rounds. This meant that as soon as they hit something more dense than air they would tumble and the 5.56 would break in half or more and shed its jacket. The .300 tumbled too, as we see by the key-holing, but it isn’t constructed like the 5.56 and stayed together.

I figured the 556 going faster would have beaten the 300 blackout on speed more than the power of the 300 bo having more power and going slower😬 good to see some shooting vids because I'm saving my stash of ammo cause someone bought all the dang ammo in rural king here in my small town in Florida and mean the whole dang shelf. Even shot gun shells are gone i got the last 3 boxes of high priced 10 mm ammo and no 9mm AMMO no where . some online but 3 weeks to ship. I have plenty for a rainy day but to get out the stash sucks. I like to leave the stash alone and plink with cheap ammo but now we have all the liberals now buying guns and ammo all new shooters who once said why do we need guns and now i guess they are scared 😂so much for the gun hatters screaming gun nuts now I'm laughing at them😜

@@WHOTEEWHO speed dont equal penetration weight plays a major factor in that. lets not forget the speed he read on the 556 box is most likely rated for a 16-20 inch barrel. try fenix ammo they might be able to get you ammo faster

I believe that the 556 is made to break into two pieces if you were firing 556 into ballistic jell then the bullet should tumble making a nasty wound cavity.

Really unexpected! When I shot 556 back in the cadets, we had two types of military loads. We had the standard 55gr and a longer heavier nato load also, not sure if you guys have them but I'd expect a heavier 556 load would come closer.

Main use for blackout is for pistols. It's a subsonic round so its not as loud. The reason you want a pistol is the shorter barrel stops overpenetrarion because shorter barrel means less velocity.

I do enjoy the content, almost all of it. The BFR segments give me wonderful nightmares. LOL The 5.56 "wound channel" seemed to be slightly more devastating and quicker. The .300 BO had to go further to do it's thing, more handy when a big giant wildhog comes up in the muddy grass ahead... It would just make me feel better. The 5.56 does do some hogs but my old eye don't get precise enough for that. How about a 5.7 12" barrel vs Tannerite inside plaster cast... you pick the quantity? That would really be interesting. Know any EOD's?

Given that both bullets are fmj's, the 300 has a higher sectional density so i expect it to penatrate further in this soft material.

They should have made the 300 black out casing the same length as the 556. The 45 mm length with the cartridge bottle necked to fit 300 black out.
