This #R107, #560SL Video: Installing The Timing Chain, Guides and Sprockets
UPDATE: I forgot to mention that I already had the crankshaft at TDC before I started. Always check the description to see any updates on the video you are watching.
In this video I finally install the timing chain cover, the timing chain, the oil pump chain, the lower guides and guide pins as well as all gears and sprockets. I set the initial timing of the M117 and close things up. This video is relevant to all #M116, #M117 Mercedes-Benz 8 cylinder gas, 3.8L, 4.2L, 5.0L, 5.6L engines.
Subscribe if you would like to support this project. You may need my help one day and I will be here for you.
I am documenting every part of this vehicle as I put it back together. The idea is to end up with the best documented 560SL rebuilds on the Internet.
Links to the manual and links to all tools used in this video are below.
I want everyone who visits my channel to know about a friend of mine named Tasos. His videos inspire me to be more like him. He is so much better than I am. You can find his RU-vid channel at:
/ @tasosmoschatos
My videos are not sponsored by anyone. The products and tools I use are products and tools I have purchased with my own money. I include links below to any special tools or products used in this video.
I used Amsoil Signature Series 5W-50 Synthetic Motor Oil to lubricate the timing chain and the oil pump chain (see Cera Tec next):
www.amsoil.com/p/signature-se...
I used a mixture of Liqui Moly (20002) Cera Tec Friction Modifier and the Amsoil 5W-50 to help with the first start:
amzn.to/3Xbj6ou
You will need lots of assembly grease. I purchased a large can of Driven Engine Assembly Grease:
amzn.to/3zaEuQm
For setting the torque of the front cover I used the GEARWRENCH 3/8" Flex Head Electronic Torque Wrench with Angle:
amzn.to/3xx0cgZ
The sealant I used was the Toyota sealant 0029500103. It was easy to use and I believe it will work nicely for this project:

That's all the special tools and products I used in this video.

Tony - I can't thank you enough for your willingness to take the time to video each aspect of your work. It is so helpful to be able to see each step and reference them for my car. Thank you again - Stephen

Great stuff Tony. I love the details that you're giving in your videos. I think you'll soon see that you just finished the hardest part of the crankcase assembly because the head installation is pretty straight forward. On my 560sec build, I installed the heads first and the timing cover last. After I waited a day for the timing cover to cure, I torqued the heads. The only difference in our assembly is that I used drei bond 1209 on my cover. I've used it for years with no reported problems. We even had the same amount of squeeze out. It was also Peter who gave me the great info on bolt ratings and tinsile strength. I can't wait to see you do the heads. Exciting. Cheers!

Remember to check cam timing with a dial indicator and make sure after adjustments to test valve to piston clearance.

My 1972 350SL M117 iron block has bronze insert bushings for the intermediate gear ,both in the block and in the timing cover. Block side is no longer available but they are easily replicated, as I have done. Nick work.

Thanks for the info. I thought it must have been the iron blocks. How’s your 350SL doing?

Your videos are really great. Wish I had a 560 SL but I have a 450 SL. My references on rails and guides don’t line up with yours. One rail 116-052-16-16, one slide rail 116-050-27-16, one chain rail 117-052-08-16, and two chain rails 117-052-09-16.

Mercedes should give you a prize of some sort. I´ll talk to the Nobel-committee here in Stockholm to see if they get some sort of Mercedes-107-prize going as well 😜

Thank you for the awesome comment Christian. I must say this project has challenged me like no other. At least I’m starting to see that I’m almost there and I’m getting excited.

Hi tony I’m installing timing chain i do lineup chaine is not joining 7mil short . What I hv done wrong can u explain . Chaine Brend new
@TonyLiveTV
@TonyLiveTV 9 месяцев назад
7mm sounds like you are off by one link. Or, could the new chain actually be 7mm short? Before installing the new chain, did you measure it first? If you did, then it will be easy for you to now measure the old chain and confirm the length is correct. Either way I believe you will need to start over. If the chain length is correct, it can mean that while installing the new chain it jumped a tooth somewhere. When installing the new chain, the chain is fed from the right (passenger) side and over the right cam sprocket. It then goes to the return sprocket (you can’t see). From there it goes back up to the left cam sprocket. From the left cam sprocket it goes to the intermediate gear (the distributor). From the intermediate gear it then goes down to the crankshaft gear and then back up to the right cam sprocket. It could be possible that somewhere between these sprockets and gears the new chain jumped one tooth. That’s the only thing I can think of. Either way, you will need to start over.
