Michael Roth of Wesleyan University doesn’t hang out with other university presidents. He also thinks some of them have failed a basic test of good sense and decency. It’s time for a conversation about college, and courage.

I am the only listener who wonders why it is only the presidents of the most prestigious schools who feature in these programs? How about the presidents of state colleges?

The primary job of state college presidents is not fundraising as it is for most private colleges and universities. The institution must survive, then it might do its job. The local state colleges and universities spend a lot of time and energy trying to balance STEM and Arts and Sports and other agenda items.

It seems like Wesleyan University has made a good choice for a President. It appears to me that he understands his job, which is fundraising, and lets the faculty and students work out the meaning of education and how to achieve the process of education students. I herd the president say "An embracing of elitism under the mantle of liberalism" and I am wondering who he has in mind as he voices that description. In my mind there are a number of "other" groups with which I disagree to which that description applies. I find it uncomfortable to consider the possibility that my belief in a representative democracy has a great deal in common with "embracing of elitism under the mantle of liberalism," because claiming to intend to achieve fairness while actually working to deliver advantage to certain groups is not OK. It feels like my values, intentions and goals for this country are self contradictory.
