In this video we look at the 10 dollar flea market Yaesu FT-101. I installed the missing boards and components and we give the radio a over look to see where it is electrically. Inside we find the Mylar capacitors on the audio board have heavy moister damage. We also discover the wrong audio board was previously installed.

Recently I was given one of these radios by a ham who no longer was interested in the hobby. The radio had been boxed up in a closet for a few years. I have not tried to transmit with it yet as I want to make sure all is working first. I know it lights up and none of the switches or controls seemed to be locked up. Your videos are GREAT! It is helping me learn more about this rig. Thank you!

Hi, Buddy. I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for posting this series. Several months ago, I became the very proud owner of an FT-101E. The rig has very good receive, but has no transmit power. I'm an electrician, not a tech. But I'm determined to bring this old rig back to life myself. Your first few videos have walked me through testing out the receiver. I'm subscribed to your channel and looking forward to your next video in this series. Thanks again. 73 Jim - KG5MPD

This segment helped me clean the relays in my “E” and “B” models. I trimmed the eraser to a wedge and used the cut-offs with tweezers to clean the stationary contacts. Worked really well. Final clean-up with Deoxit and heavy paper and it all ended super clean.. To use both sets of relay contacts it seems one could simple use jumpers to connect the three sets of contact pins on the relay socket. I really hope you go through the full alignment process on a future video - I’m not really confident with this without a spectrum analyzer. Thanks and I’ll keep watching. Zack, KC5IS

Great technique Buddy. I recently recapped the large electrolytics on my Drake C-line (Hayseed Capacitors makes great "re-stuffed" cans for a bunch of old rigs) and, less the mods done over the years, it's amazing how radios can still look like new after coming up on 40 years! 73 - Dino KL0S

Hi Buddy! Just re-watching this video again. Amazing stuff! Have a pair of these radios here. An FT-101EE (late) model that I bought at a hamfest some 25 years ago, and an FT-101 (late) that I bought about 5 years ago from an estate sale. Both radios sat for many years in a damp basement while life was in the way. Troubleshooting them now. I'm finding the brown, waxy caps to be split in the EE, much like the ones in your video. Your moisture theory sounds about right to me. Would you be able to comment, or make a video, about the voltage chart and the resistance chart in the manuals please? I've got a few questions about them that I haven't found answers to anywhere. I know that I could ask these questions on a a variety of forums, but often find responses from the many "armchair" techs that don't actually work on old gear. I believe that your knowledge and experience with these rigs is amazing! My questions are: 1. On both charts, are all measurements referenced to chassis ground? 2. On both charts, what is the difference between "0" and "E", like Pins 1, 2, & 3 on MJ 2? (maybe "E" = "chassis ground", and "0" = "not chassis ground, but voltage should be close"?) 3. On the resistance chart, what is the meaning of the symbol that looks like an "X" with 4 little dots, like Pin 10 on MJ 1, or Pins 4, 17, 19, & 22 on MJ 4? Thanks for your time, and for ALL the knowledge that you share. Cheers, Alan

G'day buddy, This is a good series ,I'm checking my FT101B seeing if needing improvement with your instructions. This is awesome a free tech knowledge. I didn't know about boards in the B's different numbers . I'm learning mate! lol
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 8 лет назад
G'day to you Dennis. If you have the service manual look on page 5-1. You will see a listing for an early and late 101B. The regulator board, HF IF board and audio boards are different in the two models of the "B" series. Look up your serial number for the correct version. Once you learn all the circuits in the 101 you will see just how easy they are to troubleshoot. The most complicated circuit in them is the band switch. It has 13 wafers and they all do something different from switching voltages to changing IF paths. Glad you like the series mate. 73

yep, someone probably did not know how to do a proper fix. Bought a non working unit to use for parts. Hence the wrong audio board installed. When they installed the audio board in their radio most likely did not fix that problem either since the jumper was installed. Radio is in decent shape though.

I love your videos, especially the FT-101 series. I was wondering if you could do a video showing how to test various things without special equipment? An example is when your tested the transmitter you used a spectrum analyzers, most of us don't have one. Love your videos. Seems like one of the best instructions on how to go at actually repairing the FT101s. Since I am a noob on this I've got a question regarding the capacitors: I found some Mylar caps with cracks in the coating on the audio board and C18 of my FT101B, but they are quite small. You said on one of your boards they tested okay. So I wonder, do I have to unsolder them all to test, or can I actually test for fault in-circuit? (PS: Audio level adjustment and RF amp seems to work.) Oh and what did you use to clean the boards and case? Looks so much nicer than my rig. 73

I got a YAESU FT_221R. The audio board has the same problem, every mylar cap is splitting open and deteriorating. Others as well. I wanna add a PL tone generator in place of the out of date tone board. Will need to do some work on those caps though. You know anything about the PA reliability in this radio? I was gonna crack it open and if it seems good shape I may rework and restore radio. The radio actually works, seems put out full 14 rated watts into a load. hard to hit reapeater without pl tone though.

@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 6 лет назад
Back when these units were made the typical line voltage was 110. Todays voltage can reach up to 122 volts. This will make the secondary voltages higher. You can use a variac to lower the voltage and see if the secondary's are more in line with the manual. If still high then start checking components in the supply.

Why does the unexpected over voltage condition of the power supplies not bother you more? It could swamp the caps which are probably weak anyway and possibly create more problems.

Hi Buddy, For relays, I've used the cardboard from a " Big Chief" tablet (a hint at my age and I hoard stuff). What about using a contact burnisher, such as a P. K. Neuses Inc. CB-6 Contact Burnishing Tool. Will that jeopardize any coating that might be on the contacts?
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 4 года назад
Hi, I never use a burnishing tool on contacts. Yes it files the coating off. Man I have not seen a Big Chief tablet in ages lol. Business cards work great. The idea is the clean and inspect as you know. One the coating is removed they will arc constantly and have to be replaced.

It is weird seeing what looks like Russian ceramic capacitors in this transceiver, I suppose some Japanese transceivers use the Phasing SSB modulator/demodulator, could the Noise Blanker circuit not be working which would be really weird as the noise blanker can really clean up the signal, could recap the board, could the audio board have got over heated or something.
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 8 лет назад
David, sounds like you have done your homework my friend. The noise blanker board has a lot of impact on the receive signal. And is also mostly overlooked when hunting down receive problems. Keep your eyes on TC-1 and T-120. They will be covered in the next video. A lot of parts for these rigs were "off the shelf" parts in the 70's. Not a lot of custom parts were used.

What does it mean when you have low output on side been high output on a.m.

Interesting Video, I would be interested in know what the 6V power supply measures if it has not been ajusted from its factory settings. I am looking forward to your next video to find out how you are going to tackel the poor receive on these radio's.

I have checked the 6 volt line and it checked at 6.8 volts. The 6 volts is derived from the upc141c IC on the regulator board. it can be adjusted with VR2. As old as these radios are I t would be unlikely to find one that has it's original factory setting. Thanks for watching, more to follow.

Thanks for the reply, Because all of the voltages measure on the high side with our digital meters compared to the values on the circuit diagram, and the Clarifier is offset if you set the 6v supply to 6v, I am asuming that it would be set to a higher voltage than 6v and 6.8v could be the right voltage. I look forward to further Video's

Thanks Clive for taking the time to ask questions. Be warned that some of the steps in the SM are backwards. It ask you to perform some IF adjustments then later ask you to set some of the voltages. When you do this it throws your IF adjustments off. So this is why we check those voltages in a beginning test. just to make sure they are somewhere close. Back in the day these radios were run on 115/117 volt line. Todays mains supply a good 121 to 122 volt main. This is why those readings are much higher now. When we get to the alignment and tune up then we will address those settings. Getting the clarifier and "zero" volt readings are very important. thanks for these questions.

Thanks for the reply, I live in the UK where we used to run the radio's on 240v, but now have 220v, the voltages are still higher even though the voltage supplied has fallen. You are correct you must measure the supply voltages before anything, so don't follow the manual blindly. Can I bring to your attention that their are several 9V supplies that you didn't measure in your video, I was wonder why you didn't or will you be measuring these in a later video?
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 8 лет назад
Yep, I had to go back and check in the video. I did say that we would not worry about the low voltage supplies at this time. Although I did check all the voltages prior to the video. I plan to have one video on just the supply rails. It does make me happy to see folks paying attention. Thanks!

hi..I restored a ft901dm. Do you like the ft-102's?

Good deal on the 901. I have always wanted a 102 but never found one that was cheap enough to get. These are great radios and was the last of the kind in the Yaesu line.

What was causing the God awful racket at 15:22 when you first turned on the radio? Was that caused by all the bad caps on PB1315?
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 7 лет назад
Yes, all those bad caps are causing that noise.

I thought so. My transformer came in yesterday so I'll be wiring that up probably this weekend and probably watching these 101 videos a few dozen times.

Buddy, My radio has a PB1189 that is missing the STK401. Can I substitute a PB1315 in place of a PB1189?
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 7 лет назад
Jon, Which model of the 101 do you have? You may have said but cannot remember. The PB-1189 was from the old 101 that did not have a letter behind them. The "B" model and up used the 1315 board. As far as I can tell the 1315 was an upgraded board of the 1189.

Scroll down a third of this page and you will see "Construction" Under that is the block diagram linkwww.qsl.net/nw2m/

Also at the moment I cannot verify that until I know your model number.
@jonmu8140
@jonmu8140 7 лет назад
Buddy, As far as I know it is a late model 101 without the letter. From the board schematics, it looks like the 1315 uses a AN-214 in place of the STK-401

Late model did use the 1189. I am searching for the schematic on the 1189 to see if it is compatible, Don't see that schematic in my service manual yet....

Hi Buddy, Thanks to your videos, I have my 101 up and running but still need to go through the receive and transmit. When I got this radio, it didn't have a speaker or mounting plate. I bought them off of eBay, but can't figure out how the speaker mounts to the plate. I know it should be simple but .... Is there any way that you can show how the speaker mounts from the back?

Jon, thanks as always. I will take some pictures and post them on my website. When I do this I will send you a link. Thanks again for your comments. Give me a bit and I will get these posted.
