The 1965 4020 is back! After extensive maintenance and restoration: her first job was completed today. Thank you so much to everyone who commented advice and suggestions for this project. We couldn't have done this without the help of "old guy" Mike!! He's the brains behind this operation. This was so much fun, now on to planting! A sneak peak of what you can expect this spring: we took delivery of a new seed tender to try out! What do you think? Thank you Unverferth, we can't wait to see this thing in action.

Just to add my 2 cents.....the battery should have a hold down clamp becuase a lead acid battery will have are reduced life if allowed to bounce around. Also consider adding a roll-over frame as it seems from the videos at least the tractor has a high center of gravity.

When I lived in Jersey, I used to take a run up to Lancaster County in PA to the tractor pulls. I've seen a few of these up there. My favorite was an old one longer. The rebuild was fantastic. It got me started rebuilding old Ford tractors. The first was a 7N, then did an 801 power Master. The chances of this turning over is very remote on their farm. It has one heck of a tire span
@Ray56z
@Ray56z 2 месяца назад
Where's the hill on their place to turn it over on? Fluid tires make it hard to do even if you want with the width. We used them on river bottoms and on the ridge hills off the bottoms.

We had three 4020 on our farm when I was growing up. I spent a lot of my teen years plowing and cultivating on a 4020. Great tractor, my brother still has one of them. No Auto steer, no cab, an umbrella if you were lucky! Great memories for me!

@@dabneyoffermein595 Have you noticed the position of nearly every tractors' exhaust? Very seldom were you going directly in the wind, and even then the exhaust pressure pushed everything 5-8 feet above your head unless you were putting around a barn lot. hey that's one of the tractors my grandpa had. Some of my best memories growing up in the 70s / 80's were us the "city slickers from California" going back to the midwest every few summers and staying for 3 months on the farm. Can't believe my grandpa let me drive his fairly new tractor with the cab when i was around 10 years old all by myself after only a 2 minute lesson.

I've never seen a 4020 Gas tractor. I picked up on it when I saw the spark plugs. I thought they were all diesels. You learn something every day. xxxxxxx
@Ray56z
@Ray56z 2 месяца назад
They were popular too. Mid '60s a lot hadn't switched to diesel equipment, still wanted everything gas.We had a couple gas to go with the several diesel, nearly identical in the work they did, just slightly more maintenance with gas due to plugs, points, less hours for the oil. As a boy then I was one of those that worked everything to it's limit. Something was said to be a 5 bottom, I had a 6-7 on it. 4020 gas is the reason I got an uncle to switch to Deere from Case, he was the odd one out in the family farming business. Always bragging his 930 or 1030 could outdo any Deere below one of the center swivels. Told him to pick a Deere he wanted to put the 930 against. He picked out the 4020 diesel and I told nah, I'd do it with the gas. He backed to his 6 bottom, told him to pull to the 8. It pulled it but it worked harder than it should be. I hooked and down the field I went, a 11 year old full of piss and vinegar just out did my 6'7" 300lb uncle, and he couldn't whup me for it.

Did you know that due to the high demand for the tractor, at one point production of the 4020 accounted for 50 per cent of tractor output at John Deere's Waterloo plant in Iowa? Like the tractor upgrades, but I have a couple comments from experience. The old 4020 wasn't very well lit for night work, so I added a bunch of bigger lights (I'd go to LED's if I was doing it again today). I replaced the stock 24v generator/voltage regulator with a 12 volt single wire 120 amp Delco (switched it all over to 12 volts) and it works great. I also used the side frame location for the battery, but because of the lighting draw and our cold winters, I went with a single suitcase battery (much larger). You need a thin (maybe 1/4") piece of plywood under that battery for 2 reasons... it keeps the spilled acid from eating your new mount, and it will prevent small stones from flying off the front wheels and puncturing the bottom of your battery.

So pleased to see Laura on the 4020 - BUT - I do think this tractor ought to be fitted with some sort of, (What we in England), call an "Anti Roll Bar" at least for Laura's Safety. All tractors can roll or 'Flip over' - quite often without warning and totally unexpectedly. - You touch the edge of a ditch, or a tyre bursts unexpectedly. They soon tip and you end up under the Tractor. They don't cost a fortune, but they will save your life.

Recommendation to put weights on the front end and consider adding seat or safety belts and rollover bar per dealer recommendation on the 4020. I envision you'll use it with mower for ditches, and if ever pull anything "stuck" etc. safety is paramount, especially since your experience is with tractors with cabs. Coming from someone who had relative die in farm tractor rollover incident. Looking forward to seeing it painted JD green & yellow. On our family farm growing up we had 4020 that was originally purchased new and did field work, then became the farm "yard" tractor like your usage will be. It was re-built 2 or 3 times! Grew up on a pig farm in Iowa and had a 4020; used for everything. Its corny, but nothing (still) runs like a Deere!

Cool. Now you need an 8' patio umbrella for hot sunny days.

Learned to drive on a Deere. Grandpa told me when I was 9 if I could start it I could drive it. Crank or flywheel start, pretty hard:) Next summer, at 10 years old, got her done:)

Wonderful old 4020. You might want to reconsider replacing the oil bath air filter with a paper filter. The oil bath filter is a great piece to filter air into the engine.
