It would be interesting to see how those schedules are further handled by the contractors, maybe some overview of solutions for construction and BOM management. As always great content!

Often there is a disconnect at this stage as they aren't often using the models themselves, but rather the extracted output (schedules, tables, exports etc.). I have worked with a few builders that actually used Revit also and it was great, they were much more demanding of model quality but the collaboration was so much more efficient.

Interesting video. I was aware of the methods, but still unable to surpass the limitations of Revit scheduling for precise take-offs. I understand that sometimes that might not be the architects role, but in Portugal we are in fact expected to provide a full list of quantities with quite a lot of detail. Obviously there is an associated margin of error, but most of the elements are measured using that last method which becomes quite challenging, as it influences heavily on how you model the building. I've been trying to achieve some pre-defined schedules for that moment and a system of naming and modelling that would suit that goal, but like you said there is still a lot of trial and error before getting it right. There is no magic button!
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 3 года назад
Yes it can be a serious challenge, especially because most firms don't seem to care how it's done, and often just manually measure drawings or don't QA the data properly. There are other platforms out there like costx and presto but the issue as you identified always comes back to model accuracy and precision of how programs measure.

Quite a broad question... typically bad models can have many issues such as warnings, high file size, lots of CAD imports, unorganised, lots of 2D drawing, poor data structure etc. I'll try to think of how I could make a video on the topic though...

Hi how r u ..I have one confusion regarding beam is why u create another length and also reporting parameter to that beam...if we just set the unit value to per metre to that beam ..and what about the steel inside beam. then .....??and the last about paint costing? Plz reply me....thanku take care
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 4 года назад
I use a reporting parameter as the standard length parameter doesn't take into account coping adjustments. For volume or surface area I'd probably use Dynamo as this can analyse the solid geometry of elements, otherwise you'd need to include a formula with length * cross sectional area of perimeter for volume/face area respectively.

Hey Ausie Man, I m in Vanuatu Using revit for a quite long time I do estimate and quantity in the revit as well. But Is quite time consuming for me sometime when setting up and getting up the final cost of a building bim model. I'm curious how to shortcut the process using dynamo. do a tutorial for that plz
@AussieBIMGuru

If you check my dynamo playlist and revit playlist i have a more recent pair of videos about how to preconfigure objects for cost takeoff to power bi. The key is having a good system initially.

This is a tough tutorial to do, you clearly have a thorough understanding of the ins and outs of Revit, well done. How long have you been using Revit? Are you self taught?
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 4 года назад
Indeed it was, hard to decide what to include and omit - 5D is a beast of a topic to cover and teach. I've been using Revit for about 10 years now, pretty much picked it up on my first day on the job and went from there. Most of what I know is self taught, but I've learnt from tips by others here and there for some of the more complex things! These days I'd say I learn 100% from trial/error and experimentation.
@ksnjos001
@ksnjos001 3 года назад
Thats the best way to learn anything its self taught cause most ppl yiu meet are not good teachers. They can be good workers or designers but they can't relay what they do to others very much liie zombies or robots or CAD monkeys...
@iftekharkhan8879

By the way I think we can't create reporting parameter to system familes that's why when increase or decrease the length of wall its wil automatically update in costing am I right? And that's why u create rep parameter to that beam is it's correct plz tell me??
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 4 года назад
No i create it for beams as the length parameter is to the end of the joint so it doesnt factor in cutbacks for start/end offset.
@archgyanrevit
@archgyanrevit 4 года назад
What exactly is a reporting parameter? What happens if you untick that option?
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 4 года назад
Reporting parameters typically just report their value for use in formulae, whilst non-reporting parameters have the ability to adjust and drive constraints. In the case of the beam, I use this as the beam is already driven by its reference planes, but I want to report the length as a parameter so I can use it in a formula to drive the beam cost parameter. There's a good summary here; knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2016/ENU/Revit-Model/files/GUID-DBC31A77-813A-47E0-8EFA-B6D821F75EDB-htm.html

What about labour cost, equipment cost, labour productivity, equipment hourly rates, manpower needed, cash flow etc......
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 2 года назад
That comes down to a business, which usually drives those rates. Typically you would factor these into the rate cost or create a separate parameter to relate to a suitable metric. You wont find those rates from a public database or resource as each market and supplier will vary.
@ukasha47
@ukasha47 2 года назад
@@AussieBIMGuru my question is" i have that data with me, how to link that data to model in a way to achieve Earned value management having a proper S curve of monthly cashflow"
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 2 года назад
@@ukasha47 if the data has to be in Revit then you'll need dedicated type parameters to store data to in all related objects. From there you can either use a tool like Dynamo or BIMLink+excel vlookup matching to introduce the additional data when needed. You'd need to use calculated schedule values to calculate the rates * cost. My preferred method is to export the data to excel with codes to match externally however. I'd suggest for data that detailed you are better exporting it out using Dynamo or similar, and using a dedicated cost platform like costx or bexel to measure and match the rates.

Im not 100% sure what you mean, do you mean converting units to become unitless in formulae? This is a bit like algebra, look at the unit as a variable (e.g. 4m2 = 4z). As a result the unit can be added or reduced using multiply/divide (e.g. 4z2 / z / z = 4).
@immi85

Hi Victor, I'd advise that you research what you need BIM for and the type of classification systems you need to work with first before going in too deep. I'd suggest exploring the Uniclass 2015 framework and cost platforms like Presto or CostX to see which is most suitable to your business' needs.

How can I take quantity takeoff of each column beam slab and others level vise and element vise I couldn't takeoff rebar for host nm
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 4 года назад
These elements are all schedule-able. Columns and beams can be scheduled by length and/or type, slabs can be scheduled by thickness/surface area and you can use these figures to drive a cost estimation process if you have a table of cost rates to apply. Sometimes I know volume is used as a metric for takeoff vs linear metre so in this case Dynamo could be used to assess solid volume of elements.

@AussieBIMGuru

Hard to say, depends on your price range and what other needs you have. I made a video a few weeks ago showing what laptop I use as well as some general recommendations. I understand your challenge, so many choices out there! Consider looking into the 1080ti graphics range (maybe even 2080) as this apparently works well for Revit/VR/gaming setup.

How can we calculate the formwork and reinforcement cost
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 2 года назад
Assuming you know the cost of formwork you can multiply that by the area. Reinforcement would need to be modelled most likely in order to be costed unless you know reinforcement per m3 for elements.

Thanks it was really helpful👌 How can we have a cust estimation base on Uniformat or Masterformat?
@AussieBIMGuru
@AussieBIMGuru 4 года назад
You're welcome Pepe! Typically the best way is to either use Assembly codes from Revit objects (takes time) or save a bit of time using the BIM interoperability tools that come with newer versions of Revit - these can apply a Uniclass 2015 system slightly faster. From here a program capable of viewing cost field data in tandem with element quantities/takeoff could do the trick, such as CostX for example which can support tree data structures like Uniclass.
