5G Beam-Steering with EM/Circuit Excitation and Co-simulation in PathWave ADS

This short 3-minute video shows how EM/Circuit excitation and co-simulation in PathWave Advanced Design System (ADS) allows you to combine the whole transmit chain with all of its circuit level components along with the physical antenna's EM simulation to deliver accurate simulation results of the whole system with all of its components, including the antenna. This is done by sweeping the phase angle on a 5G phased-array transmit chain interfacing a 4X4 patch antenna. Please note, we are not abstracting some static models to perform the circuit and EM co-simulation here; we are actually co-simulating the real circuits at their device level and with memory effects.

Can you guys please post a comprehensive tutorial on how to construct and simulate with a FINITE ground plane? I find it difficult to properly characterize any planar antenna designs with Momentum's assumption of an infinite ground plane as it makes a huge difference in results. Thank you.

Thank you, Michael for your comment. In Momentum you can create a finite ground plane; create an open substrate, map the gnd layer as sheet, draw its shape and use the layer as ‘Gnd Layer’ for the ports. What cannot be done is to account for the finite size of the dielectrics. Assumption is they extend to infinity and take away energy, in a surface wave, that is not radiated. But alternatively, you could use the 3D FEM simulator in ADS which allows you to simulate any structure with finite substrate (Grounds and dielectrics). Please contact our representatives in your area for examples and support on this issue.

@@KeysightEEsofEDA Hi Keysight, thank you for the reply - it is amazing to see that you guys are attentive to youtube :)! I have tried this method and have even followed the CPWG tutorial where the reference ports are placed on either sides of the excitation port. I found that the results were sensitive to the placement of these ports and the meshing would change as well. I can't seem to find a way to apply a "universal" ground reference rather than single point ground references.
