Great Video! One thing I did not understand is, when shooting on the full resolution does the horizontal filed of view also expand? Does the "normal" 16:9 4K comes from oversampling the full sensor, or croping in? Thanks!
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 лет назад
Thanks! That’s a good question and I realise the way I demonstrated the extra resolution can confuse things, but it’s the same field of view (or extremely close) width-wise, but there are more pixels packed in to the 5K image and you gain FOV above and below the usual 16:9 window. You can crop in to those extra pixels to add zooms / pans / rotations while keeping a 4K resolution, or you can use the whole 5K image in a 16:9 format and have more pixels width-wise than 4K gives, and still get extra image above and below to tilt / reframe with. Hope that makes sense!
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 лет назад
SporkStudio also yes, the GH5 4K mode is already over-sampled on the sensor.
@pdelinikolas
@pdelinikolas 5 лет назад
@@ShotByMyles Ah I see! Thanks for clarifying that! So it seems that all other 4K modes are indeed oversampled and not croped on the sensor, so it is not a pixel to pixel readout.
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 лет назад
SporkStudio correct! In the video I said outputting the 5K video as 4K is sharper as it’d be oversampled- that’s assuming the bigger benefit comes with over-sampling in post rather than what the camera does.
@pdelinikolas
@pdelinikolas 5 лет назад
@@ShotByMyles I do not currently own a GH5 to test this, but I think it would be an interesting comparison to see if the oversampling done inside the camera (or in post) improves the image quality or not. You would have to shoot a normal 4K with a zoom lens and then shoot the same thing with the 5K mode but zoom out a bit so that when you crop to 4K pixel to pixel in post you see the same filed of view and can compare the overall sharpness and image quality. The reason I think this would be interesting is because even though camera manufacturers promote oversampling (as it is better for scaling down because you do not lose any light and filed of view from the sensor as with croping), TV specifications (EBU specs come to mind) ask that when you shoot something in true 4K (not UHD) and need to deliver to UHD, you should crop in and not scale down as a pixel to pixel copy is better than oversampling.

If you use 3:2 ratio for video you can record 5184x3456, that brings u a higher effective resolution for 16:9 material! 4:3 = 4992x3744 -> in 16:9 -> 4992x 2808 = 14.017.536 pixels 3:2 = 5184x3456 -> in 16:9 -> 5184x2916 = 15.116.544 pixels Easies way is to set 16:9 then you dont need to crop anything later you need to disable anamorphic mode , thats all ;)

For the past 1 year many great cameras have been introduced to the market and yet I feel my remarkable GH5 still beats all of them in overall bang for the buck and options. If Sony Alpha users had 5K option they would shove it down your throat every 5 seconds hahaha I actually have an anamorphic setup and if exposed correctly, the footage out of this camera is stunning. Having the 5K option is just the icing on the cake. That "Anamorphic desqueeze display" is such a huge help when shooting with a 2X anamorphic scope

were making a lot of videos at 1:1 for Instagram so instead of sampling down from 4K 16:9 this gives me the ability to go to 1:1 easily from 4:3 ratio, then sample down to 4K 16:9 but have lots of movement and also to shoot vertically. Will see how this all turns out but very interesting .

Great review of using 5k on the GH5! I'm not interested in extra pixels, I think what would swing me is image quality improvements with the utilization of h.265. The Samsung NX1 is still a beast of a camera 4 years later mainly because it uses h.265. I'd love to see or perform a test between 4K 10bit 4:22 150 mbps vs 5k 10 bit 422 200 mbps of pans, tilts, gimbal, and movement within statics (statics are not a good test for compression because codecs thrive with limited changes in the scene). Andrew Reid from EOSHD did a nice review of the 5k feature, but I'm still curious with scene changes and comparisons.
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 лет назад
Thanks! I’m probably not the man for that job- but it’s worth bearing in mind the 5K is 420 and not 422 if that matters to you. Resolution aside, I’d guess at the 4K mode because its 150Mbps is spread across less than half the pixels of the 5K’s 200Mbps. I know HEVC is more efficient but I’m not sure it bridges a gap that big.
@robjackson9364
@robjackson9364 5 лет назад
@@ShotByMyles 5k is not 10 bit 422?! Son of a biscuit. 4k 10 bit 422 All-I, 150mbps, 1080 10 bit 422 All-I 60fps, and 100mbps are pretty impressive in themselves. Just picked up the BMPCC4k and I'll be interested in seeing the differences. Thanks for the reply!

The thing I noticed with this technique is that when working on a 4k timeline in premiere, the 4k footage is actually sharper than the 6k downscaled version. This is probably due to the pixel mapping when scaling with an odd resolution. When working with the native resolution of the 6k files, while matching the frames exactly, I saw no discernible differences between the 4k version. So the biggest factor I see for using 6k would be for image flexibility rather an improved image quality. Tested this both on premiere and Fcpx.
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 лет назад
That's very interesting, thanks for the feedback. If true that's frustrating that they aren't able to use the extra resolution for sharpness, wonder what the impact would be on noise though. Cheers

In my testing, best was face/eye AF in combination with a smaller focus area. 225+face did not perform as well, but when limiting the search of the face (rather the lock-in) to a smaller area, it had much better confidence and less hesitation

Hi John, I must point out that while it’s 10 bit the chroma sampling is 420, so that might actually not be ideal for green screen- I’m hearing it’s not perfect so something to bear in mind! The 4K All-i 10 bit 422 might edge this out for intensive green screen work...

I keep it all centered in frame when shooting. Because my Mac 2016 does not natively play H265 then I have to ProRes all my files before I begin editing. But I use a 3840x1670 timeline which gives me a ton of flexibility and the clarity of the image is fantastic.@@skybizvideomediaproduction6167

@AcuraAddicted
@AcuraAddicted 5 лет назад
Shot by Myles Yes, and thank you for your response! I got that I only gain top and bottom. This is still very useful to my application. See, due to a very crammed space in my vehicle I am very close to my camera when shooting my vids. So I have a very little pan/zoom room to play with when switching frames. I already downsize my vids to 1440p anyway, but that extra space on top and in the bottom will add on to the available pan room, which is especially useful when I need to reframe myself so my hand gestures can be seen. Again, I’m very glad I stumbled upon your video, as I didn’t know about this before. Thank you!

No. That is not the case. It is not as sharp as recording UHD when you zoom in to fill the frame. Try for your self. But that's not all together a bad thing. It takes a lot of the videoness out of the footage 👍
@ShotByMyles

@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 5 лет назад
Thanks Randy, I’ll bear that in mind! In case it helps, my workflow with it so far has been: 1. Correct white balance (if necessary). If on FCPX, avoid the white balance function if it impacts luma 2. Add the conversion LUT if using cine-D or HLG to convert to v-log 3. If shot is over-exposed (which is recommended for slow motion) bring down exposure to normal here. Skin tones and details should be below 70 IRE otherwise they could be lost in the LUT’s rolloff. I normally disable the conversion LUT in step 2 to judge that. 4. Apply GHAlex LUT 5. Adjust saturation / luma to taste. If skin tones are too pink I may adjust colour in mids or try adjusting white balance done in step 1.

hi, thank you for the great video. I am not a youtuber, but learn a lot here! What I am looking for is a way to use v log l with internal recording, because even in 400mbits the colors do artefact sometimes when I apply LUTS. the 200mbit 5K, because it is h265 and GOP, is way more efficient then a 400mbit all I, so in theory it would contain more data to play with despite being 4 2 0.

This is fascinating! I use a ton of vertical video, and I use this 4:3 technique to reframe my images on m43... Never even considered that we can also now do it with video. Very excited to try this out! May need better sd cards first 😂

Really been enjoying your content myles, surprised you've only got 5k subs tbh. Got your gh5 lut yesterday and its much better than the two i've had before! (Joo.woorks and ground control). Really liked those shots of leeds too, I've shot round there when I've been filming the Europe's Strongest Man content, as we stay in the double tree. Would like to see your thoughts on HLG v VLOG?
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 4 года назад
Thanks Joe! It’s quiet round here now with Double Tree closed! I honestly haven’t done a huge HLG vs v-log test, I prefer v-log personally just because I know the monitor can display what the camera is capturing, whereas with HLG it isn’t able to. I also have a few LUTs that are designed for v-log, including filmconvert, so I have more options for grading with v-log. I know some people prefer HLG though (including Paul Leeming) and it will most probably work better in low light as far as noise goes!

Was supposed to add that i’ve shot round there and my stuff didn’t end up being nearly as good or creative haha. I do like vlog but in lowlight it really butchers a lot of colours

joe schofield haha thanks a lot! This is OTT honestly, just got carried away trying to make use of the extra pixels :) Agreed Log is not kind in low light! I use cine-d mainly in low light myself but some people do enjoy HLG!

@@ShotByMyles Ive not looked back to cine D since buying vlog. It took me a lot longer than i'm proud to admit that I was filming log and not converting it to 709 for a LONG time hahahah. I was just adding max contrast to the log footage and didn't consider using lumetri scopes. Since getting your lut my low light stuff looks loads better though! The ground control 709 lut i was using had this nasty green tint to everything
@ShotByMyles
@ShotByMyles 4 года назад
@@joescho I recommend Cine-D if you ever shoot 8 bit though (slow motion stuff for example) as Log can give you gross blotches of colour in 8 bit which isn't pretty if it happens on a face :) I actually don't mind v-log unconverted with a bunch of contrast / saturation! I tried it once and thought it looked alright!

It's all about getting the best picture quality from your footage. 6K of course is better than 4K. But you do that by halving your bitrate. Bitrate is an equally important part of the equation, I believe. Are you actually getting sharper, cleaner footage using the anamorphic mode with a higher resolution, but lower bitrate?

There is a bit of misunderstanding as regard to resolution versus angle of view. Just to clarify. Regardless in what resolution you are shooting, horizontal angle of view does not change. GH5 always over-samples from full size of sensor. So, if you are using 6k recording method, camera will see exactly the same area horizontally, as if shooting stills or 4K or HD. What is however different, you will get higher resolution than shooting in 4k, approximately 5K. and larger vertical angle. What it means that you can zoom in horizontally in post about 20%, without loosing 4K resolution. Also oversampling from 5K to 4K should give you sharper image, but that should be tested on this camera, due to the fact when recording in 4K, camera already over-samples from higher resolution sensor.
@ShotByMyles

Thanks for your input, I realised the FOV could’ve been clearer when I was demonstrating the extra resolution, hopefully not too confusing! That was the reason I pinned the first comment on FOV :)

Hi Myles I did some preliminary testing, wondering how can I sent you some still grabs. Here is what I did. I shot the test footage with my GH5 with Panasonic 12-40 Pro-lens. I shot the test at focal length of 25mm, at T5.6. (This lens is very sharp!). I set up focus charts on the wall, manually focused (using external monitor). First I shot the still image to see what full sensor (5184 x 3888) captures. First shot was shot at C4K, 4:2:2, 10 bit 400mb/sec. (4096x 2160). The horizontal angle of view was exactly same as on still picture. It means, that camera over-samples to C4K from full width of sensor. Before I go further, GH5 as most of other cameras are using CMOS sensor. RAW info from sensor has to be De-Bayered. What it practically means, if for example you have 4K sensor - actual resolution will not by 4K, but about 25-30% lower. If shooting in 4K Cinema - 4096 pixels horizontally, GH5 over-samples from 5184 pixels horizontally. (Factor 1.26). This should be enough to produce true 4K resolution. Next I shot in 6K mode 4:2:0 10 bit 200Mb/s. Did not move camera, angle of view was exactly same as previously. Again, it means that camera is over sampling from 5184 to 4992, this time the factor is only 1.04. We are getting 5K image in size but not 5K in actual resolution. On my last shot I moved the camera back. I calculated how wide I need to go, so after bringing the shot to edit timeline and zooming in, to get same size of image as in previous shots, by using only 4K area of image. I brought all three shots into Resolve - into C4K timeline. Results are disappointing. The sharpest image was achieved by shooting in Cinema 4K. Second shot I zoomed in about 1.3 times, to fill frame horizontally. Third shot (which was shot wider) I zoomed in to have same framing as in previous shots, using 4K area of 5K image. Second shot was comparably sharp but I already see some minor loss of sharpness. The 3rd shot (using 4K area from 5K shot) was not really usable, big drop in sharpness. I will do more tests. Using this method theoretically makes sense, practically it does not work. In next couple of days I will do more tests - some real shot comparisons.

Milan Podsedly that’s interesting thanks, so 4K resolution carved out of C4K is sharper than from 5K? That makes a lot of sense, but obviously C4K doesn’t give you anywhere near the extra pixels to play with when you’ve done that.

To grasp why 4K extraction from 5K video shot with GH5 is not going to be as sharp as when shot in 4K, you have to understand how oversampling and De-Bayering works. Let's say you have 4K sensor. It has approximately 4 thousand photo-sites horizontally. 50% are green sensitive 25% Red and 25% Blue sensitive. Green photosites only send Green channel information, not Red and Blue, Red sends only Red channel information, not Green and Blue and so on. To recreate a picture, software needs to guess what would be Red and Blue information for Green photosites, and for Red and Blue photosites. Software takes the information from surrounding photosites and makes an educated guess, what missing values would be. This process is called De-Bayering. After De-Bayering we have 4 thousand pixels each containing full information for each R,G,B channels. Recreating missing info still requires some guessing, therefore we can estimate that software can be only 70-80% accurate. Therefore 4K sensor will have 4000 pixels horizontally, however effective sharpness will only be somewhere around 3.2 - 3.5K. When ARRI came with ARRI Alexa - this was HD (2K) Camera with 3.2K sensor for exactly same reason. By over-sampling image from 3.2K sensor to 2K video, they acheived true 2K resolution. Same thing applies to GH5. It has approximately 5K sensor. By oversampling to 4K, Panasonic made sure that 4K image has 4K resolution. If you are shooting 5K open gate, your 5K image will not have 5K resolution, only approximately 4K. Yes it will have 5K pixels horizontally, but effective resolution will only be 4K. Now if you will extract 4K image size from your 5K video - it is not going to be as sharp, as if you shoot 4K. As a professional cinematographer I do not see any advantage of shooting in 5K open gate mode. Frame it right when you are shooting. Also 5K mode does not give you option of shooting in 4:2:2. You want the best quality -shoot C4K 4:2:2, 10 bit highest bit rate. If you are not worried about best resolution, go ahead shoot 5K with GH5.

Milan Podsedly thanks for the input. I don’t recall my exact words in the video but I hope I didn’t say that 4K extracted from 5K footage would be as sharp as oversampled 4K! For sharpness I’d compare 5K footage to 4K footage, and if you have no interest in outputting 5K or can’t view it on your monitor, then a fairer comparison would be to downscale the 5K to 4K and then compare. Cropping in helps for reframing in post as I discuss here, but if ‘get your framing right’ in camera is an option then I’m not sure I’d use 5K either. This is more relevant to people that see value in reframing / smooth pans and tilts and rotations done in post than a cinematographer on a controlled set with all the toys. Interesting that you say 5K only gives 4K resolution- isn’t the 5K oversampled as well? The 5K mode gives you about 18 million pixels but it’s a 20MP sensor. Cheers

GH5 4K is already oversampled from 5K width in-camera. So why should 5K which gets oversampled in post look better? At least with my GH5, it's not true.
