I just ran my PB in the 5K two weeks ago at age 63. Finally going sub 20 with a 19:53. I would say that doing more speed work during this COVID cancellation of the usual HM races and training I do has attributed to my improvement.
I literally set my 5K PR yesterday. 21:30 was the time. I’m 42 and really didn’t start taking running that seriously until this year. Not really sure what happened yesterday that caused me to be so fast for me. I’ve just been logging a lot of miles and mixing up training with fast and tempo work. Who knows. Really pleased with the results though. Shoes were the Brooks Hyperion Tempo.
I was blessed to run at Hayward Field. I lived in Eugene from 1981-1984 and ran the Nike-OTC Marathon from ‘79- ‘82, a race that always finished on the track at Hayward Field. I also ran a special-edition 5-mile race on the track during one of their weekly All-Comers meets organized by OTC. My lifetime best 5km was 14:59 in 1982.
QD: 5k PR is 17:59. i ran this in lockdown (may) when i was doing the most training i have done in years! i was mostly running long, easy miles to build my base. i got injured so didn’t manage to push on, getting back into it again now
Muhammad Mifzal 80-90% of my training was long, easy miles. the rest would be pretty specific - hill reps, sprint sessions, tempo runs. i found that the long easy miles were by far the most important part of my training
Broke my 5km PR by 50 seconds last week at 21:01, age 43. With a lace undone at 1km! I ran in Adidas SL20’s. They are so underrated for the current price. Great light and fast shoes. Why did I PR? No injuries lately, higher mileage, recent change to 80/20 rule instead of PRing every run! My 20% effort runs are much higher quality. I was amazed how many extra strides or intervals I could do without fatigue and still keep the pace really high. Don’t ignore recovery days people💪. And of course all the advice I’ve followed from Seth and all the great running channels on the Tube👍
QD: 5k PB in a race is 17:43 last December as a 43yo & then 17:18 in a time trial on a flat grass track in April this year as a 44yo. Had a marathon training base leading up to those efforts, and the speed was a by product of integrating some solid threshold and vo2 max sessions into my training for a 10k and a half marathon respectively, not super fast in the overall scheme of things but the fact that i'm still improving at age 44 really gives me encouragement to continue the journey.
I ran the Nike OTC ( Oregon Track Club ) Marathon back in the 80's. The finish line was on the Hayward Field track. That Marathon had an elite field that was unreal. I remember that track being very soft...and wet due to a rainy day. ( Rain in Oregon !) What else is new. Love your vids Seth...
QD : my long time running buddy Bruce Mortenson ran for Bowerman/Oregon and was the NCAA steeplechase champion. He lives in a condo near the track and says the new track is awesome, but certainly misses the old Hayward field house.
Shout out to Joe! QD: recent 5K time trail end of August, about a week before running a marathon, in the taper (not sure why I did that...). I did 19'55" on the tracks and my objective was to go below 20'. It was my first time (I've been running seriously for like 10 months only). Looking forward to trying it again... maybe in the Razor Elite, who knows! Well done Seth!
Kudos to Joe. QD 21:41. I’m 37 and have been running for 4 years. Have spent this whole time focusing on distance rather than speed, having done some marathons and such.
21:36 at 46 at jingle bell run local 5 k. I won the women’s masters. Did the Eugene Marathon in 2010 at the end you run into the Hayward Track to finish. Was having a good day and finished fast it was a wonderful feeling and a marathon PR.
QD: my PR in the 5K is 15:47 (nothing too special), and I ran that my senior year of college during indoor track. this PR was a little special because when I got to college my PR was 18:20 something and I big goal of mine was to break 16. I think a combination of coaching, training, and confidence helped me. I had an extremely intelligent coach who believed in all of us athletes and I believed in him and his training. I think that confidence helped me get after it and push to a PR
QD: I was supposed to run 5K race today, which was cancelled. Nevertheless I kept training and finished 10-week training block. Just did 5K time trial this morning and managed to go sub 22 and hit new PR (21:55 to be exact - 1:43 improvement) :) Also bought ASICS GlideRide for ~$80 and they are LIT (I think they helped me today a little ;) )! Thank you for this recommendation! Thanks Joe for those shots!
22:08 5k from Dec 2018 whilst I was marathon training. I put it down to the amount of easy miles I was getting in. And I was only going to go for a fast mile that day so tricked myself into starting way too fast. Been injured a lot since with shin splints etc. Recently beaten my 10k and half PR so will be going for 5k next weekend.
QOD: PB 23:07 5K.. May 2019... it happened because it was raining and I was distracted by the rain from the things that normally bug me... age almost 46 at the time...
QD: Best road 5k is 17:17, 3 months ago. I think I got that time as it was right on the seafront so very flat, pleasant weather, a bit of backwind and was at my lowest bodyweight for quite a while. I think I was peaking as had just ran my first sub 1:30 half marathon distance a few days before (which was only my second ever time going the HM distance, the first being one month before)
I’m not going to answer the QD yet because I have a team time trial this morning ;) Really fast time, Seth! This is the time I want to run my senior or junior year of high school! (Edit) QD: I didn’t PR in the 5K so my PR is 21:29... ran in the Saucony Kinvara 11.
QD:15:22 in the dragonflys back in august. a little disappointed because i wanted to go under 15, but still a good time. will do a 5k road TT mid october since XC is canceled🤩
I'm 20 and I think my pr was around 23 minutes in high school at a local 5k run I have never owned any specific running shoes but I'm starting to feel in my feet as I get more into running that I have to buy specific shoes to run in and pretty overwhelmed with all of the options and the costs considering I'm in college. I also have to decide on bettering my 5k and preparing for a marathon all of this is a lot to take in but gosh if I'm not enjoying it!
QD: my 5k PR is 21:03 and I did it within my las 10k race two weeks ago. I attempted a time trail a month ago and it was 21:17, but during the last 5.000m of the 10k race I ran faster than the time trail! I guess I was doing something wrong😂. Next goal 20:30!💪🏻
Nice job! I know they have converters that tell you what your effort would be at sea level, but do they account for the increase in heat/humidity? Need to find a sea level course with weather like Denver!
My fastest ever was 2002 my 10th grad year I ran an 18:14 before I tore my ACL. Picked back up running again about year and half ago and I ran a 20:40 a few months ago. Working hard to get back down under 20 min again
Never understood how people just stop after running that hard. I have to gradually slow down and then walk for 5 minutes or my heart starts beating in some crazy rhythm because it’s dropping so fast.
I split a 15:30 during a 8k in college in 2016. I was a 1500m 800m guy so I thought that was pretty quick. I took a few years off after college from running because I got burnt out but I'm trying to get back into it and run sub 15:30 in 2021.
26.05 for my 5k PR as my friend was pacing me at our running club.... I can't eve. Get under 30 minutes now but that's fine as I prefer longer runs now 10milers or half's....shout out too Joe.. 🏃♂️🏃♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️x
Wow! People here are fast! QD: My only 5K was last December at 23:56. Not sure if I'd be any faster today as I haven't been doing speedwork. Then again, I didn't then either...
Don't have a lot of 5k's under my belt but my PR is 18:57 as far as I know - its one I would love to get back down to however time may be against me at 51 LOL - Just ran a Sub 50 Time Trial a week ago for 10K so working my way back down. I have run at Hayward but never was able to race there.
19:17 one week ago and I have only been running for 2 months dropped it from 23:05 onwards and upwards only 15 hopefully one day can get it in the 15 minutes zone
That's ok I'm proud of my 33minutes 5k time! Down from 45 minutes. Your pegasus recommendation was spot on too. Next up half marathon later this month 😍
People in here have insane times, saying theyr'e sort of slow when at about 17 minutes. I ran a 21:45 the other day after running 3-4 times a week this whole year, I'm 27 years old (male). I think that is a good time, but my goal is to get below 20 min. Still it seems like some americans have insane standards lol.
Dude, you are doing fine. Just enjoy the ride, whatever the time. Running is supposed to add something to your life, not be such a chore it takes away from the rest of it. Sub-20 is a great goal. I raced cc in hs and college, played basketball, and some pro tennis. Listen to your body. Love the beauty of the sport. Love your life. That's real success.
Hanensens don’t worry, started at 31 minutes 3years ago, now 18:20. I am really happy with this but the first year my fastest was 23:00. Consistincy is key!
Right there with you man, just ran a 22 minute 5k PR @ 40; Been running all year 25 to 30 miles a week - shooting for > 1k miles this year. Would love to run a sub 20 but holy hell.. would need perfect conditions.
One of the quotes I like is “comparison is the thief of joy”. There are lots of runners who aim for a PR and attain it, and instead of feeling the accomplishment of that, instead are deflated when they see the times that other runners can achieve. Here is the thing, if you run a PR - enjoy it, it doesn’t matter whether you have aimed for a sub 30 mins 5km or a sub 15 mins. Running is all about testing yourself, enjoying what it does for you,. Anyone who runs deserve kudos.
QD: I’m in 9th grade and last week I ran 17:22 on a decently flat all grass xc course. So convenient that you posted a 5k time trial while I’m on the way to a 5k xc meet as well
QD: 5K pr 33:11 two weeks ago at age 38... Couch to 5K from mid June. Aiming for under 25 mins in the next couple of months. Iv been ur subscriber since a year ago. Started watching for the shoe reviews but i kept putting off buying a pair and after a year, you've motivated me to start and get running. Thank you so much!
14:41 on the track in the spring of 2019. Low 60’s at night with 1st-10th place separated by 3 seconds (I was 2nd). 4:36 last 1600m. Hoping to be sub 14:30 next spring.
Back in 1985 I ran 14:24 in Austin, Texas "The Bun Run 5k Run" , 14:26 in Washington DC Cherry Blossom 5k Run 14:27, cross the finish line in 12th, and 8th place. Now at age 58 I am very thankful 🙏 to God for giving me a second chance to enjoy life and running. Everytime I go walking, jogging, waddle and run when I fill good run. Because my running career ended in 1989 when I was diagnosed with tumors in my hip and thigh. I began therapy and running again after my operation. Now everytime I run is a blessing... thank you Jesus Christ... This morning I ran 3.1 in 32 minutes but I was not pushing it I was enjoy the early morning easy run.
I have a 5k PR of 17:03, but never really given it any focus. I'll try once I'm done with this marathon training (actually my last session was 4x5km, and they were all at Threshold so I had a nice set of 5km's in one session 😂)... Super great time for you Seth and Joe took it like a champ!
QD: My 5k pr is 17:32. I understand that “good times” are subjective and I’m very happy with my time. I ran it a few weeks ago. I’d been training pretty well with a few bumps but overall super good. I don’t really remember my sleep and I’d been training mostly in the Pegasus 37’s. I look forward to further improvement and wish the best for everyone else, regardless of where they are in their fitness journey :) I mean that.
Rxyzer haha I didn’t make any excuses; I just said what happened 😂. The racing bit of my season is coming to a close but I’m gonna continue to train and I’m hoping to really do well in track. Injuries are just a part of the sport
Robby Fitzgerald you did. You’re saying oh but I had injury ohh it was cold ohh my left testicle hurt. Stop. The time you ran is the best you could have done. Don’t add this unnecessary bullshit. It’s very childish
Let’s goo Seth!! QD: it wasn’t that good But I ran a 17:30 almost exactly a year ago just before I turned 16. I had some really good competition and it was the first time I had ever worn XC spikes
18:15 in 2011 when I was 36. A friend of mine was a bit faster but I managed to attach myself to him until there was 1000m left and he turned up the heat. I manged 18:19 earlier this summer so maybe there is still a chance to beat it. 🙂
23:00 5K PR, 2019 (17 y o), that happened because i never had the chance to run longer/higher millage 😅. I trained once a week at school and didn't even run further than 4K, but all of it is speed session. After crossing the finish line my leg became jelly 🤣. Sorry for bad grammar
This is real life, I fell riding a bicycle last month and my SD card in the mobile got damaged too. Bumps and pots in our journey but we keep going towards the goal and never give up!!
QD: I have a race today... hoping to smash my 17:18 5k pr. I actually ran that this winter on the track during a 5k tempo workout 😂. The tempo effort turned more into a race effort lol
My best 5k time is 15:25 which I ran during a race on the 31st of December last year in the Netherlands. The competition was crazy and I almost had to let go around 4k, but I told myself to stick with the front group and managed to outsprint everyone over the last 300m. I'm hoping to break 15 minutes this year. Seth, I'm coming for that pb of yours. ;P
@@MrSupernova111 I tend to say I'm sub-elite, but honestly I just really like running fast. :P Here's the race I was talking about: results.chronotrack.com/event/results/event/event-51266
@@muhammadmifzal3589 2 or 3 interval/track trainings per week + about 3 longer runs (varying distance/pace). I try to keep one day rest at least, but sometimes I get too excited about running.
@@AsGuusual . Wow! That's amazing and thank you for the tips. I'm more of a 5k runner myself but not nearly as fast as you. My current goal is to run my first marathon. Congrats on your awesome accomplishment!
I ran the Eugene marathon in 2014 and the last 200 meters finished on Hayward field track. Epic finish knowing the likes of Pre ran same footsteps!!!!!
Excellent analysis, and a competitive 5k time. Greetings from a place having totally opposite weather conditions (35 degrees Celsius) and humidity close to 75% (Saudi Arabia).
QD: Ran a 17:53 today coincidentally. Only started running consistently 6 months ago and have slowly and finally worked my way up to 100km+ weeks for 3 weeks now. Decided to do a 5km time trial today to see where my fitness is at.
QD: 16:41, ran it this season. It was at a really good time after all my summer training and I paced myself very well, and everything came together. I’ve got a race in about 4 hours, so that PR may not stand much longer
Nice one! You could go a lot faster, I reckon. My PR, from 1984, is 17:45. This year, without speedwork, ran a 18:45 in August. I think I could do about 18:15 with a bit of specific work. I’m 53.
Shout out to Joe!! I made the mistake of getting cought in a thunderstorm while riding my bike this summer. Lightening strike about 50 feet in front of me had me grabbing my brakes so hard that I fell of my bike and the chain came off! QD: age 23(1987) - 19:45 , age 44 - 21:06, age 53 - 23:12 and it gets a little harder every year!
I haven't tried 5000m on track just 5K Parkrun 21:24 and Garmin 5K PR 21:17 inside of 5,4km multi-terrain race, thought my training approach is just building mileage and enjoy about sunrise 🌞
Seth, just did the Manitou incline for the first time today. Do you have a video of that? QD 22:30 I found your channel about 9 months ago when I bought my first set of running shoes (sketchers go horizon) and went from about 20 miles in 2019, to 500 miles in 2020. Even more in 2021 will be in store for me. Thanks for your videos.
