Man, I don't even feel like a 5VZ is worth spending all that time and money rebuilding. You can get a low mileage JDM 5VZ for like 1.5k and run it for another 300k. Swap the motor in 4-5 hours taking your sweet time. Only worth it if you enjoy doing rebuilding engines.

We had thought, but we wanted to gain the experience and break down the engine to learn more about it for hands on!

Where are these $1.5k jdm engines you speak of? 🤔

@@El_Scorcho_ for some reason youtube deleted my response. Last attempt. That was the price that we used to pay for them. Looks like ebay has USDM ones for 1.5-1.7 which is better since its a direct swap. You can pull your own from a junkyard for 700 bucks.

I heard JDM engines gave a bad reputation, some are garbage , it seems they are just pulling engines out of high mileage vehicles without testing them .

Bucket shims... what kind of numbers did you see before the rebuild [and how many miles were on it]?

Well it had a blown head gasket so we are not sure what the numbers were. It had about 250,000 miles.

You have to measure them yourself since everyone's is different. However, I just did mine at 230k and they were all still within OE specs. Only two of the exhaust side was on the lower end of 0.010" which I could technically I didn't need to adjust and check after another 100k. This is the general consensus I've seen of other 5VZ but I have also seen reports of people with almost no clearance on some of the valves. You need to do the work and check. It will give you peace of mind.
