This is part one of a series of videos following a complete tear-down and rebuild of a 1986 GM 6.2 liter diesel engine that came from a 1986 M1008 CUCV. (For search engines: M1009, M1010, M1028, M1031)
In Part 1 we take the shortest route possible to quickly remove the entire top end of the GM 6.2 liter diesel. We will remove the CDR Valve, Vacuum Pump, Coolant Crossover/Thermostat Housing, Water Pump Assembly, Fuel Pump Assembly, Intake Manifold, Exhaust Manifold, Rocker Assemblies, Push Rods, Heads and Dipstick. We'll also inspect and take a look at that curious water situation.
One of my original songs, New Tattoo, which I have managed through TuneCore got a copyright claim against it... From TuneCore! LOL! I basically put in a copyright claim on myself! So I had to replace that original song in this video with one from RU-vid's sound bank. If you want to hear my original, New Tattoo, check it out on iTunes (and wherever else music is sold!) itunes.apple.com/album/id15566...

Engine is pretty good as issued. Replace the head bolts with studs. The timing chain and the injection pump gears assembly might create some timing confussion. Hanes diesel book did not mention it but you must match the chain timing marks, (no brainer there) then turn the crank over 180 degrees to match the marks on the injection pump gears. The book skipped that step. Overall, the weakest thing on the K5 vehicle is the 700r4 transmission and the TV cable adjustment that will burn it out quick.

@@LuisJimenez-jv3xr I found out about this the hard way back in the mid '90s. Even went to a Chevy dealer repair shop to ask the technician about it, but they did not have any answers. Them boys were only working on gasoline motors. Diesel engine was a foreign thing to them. I figured it out myself after a couple of days. My wife took over the best vehicle in the house at that time and drove it like she stole it! I had a piston skirt crack in one piston some time later. It rung like a bell when it idled. I remember when it happened to me. I cought it just in time before the wrist pin separated from the rest of the piston. Had to do head gasket on half the motor to get it replaced. The piston replacement can be ordered in different sizes from A to F. Same dealership as before, had no clue what I wanted when I told them my size I needed.

@RocknusUrbanCamouflage
@RocknusUrbanCamouflage 2 года назад
J/C-code engines are about the things attached to the block, not the block itself. A J-code engine will have a different intake, the heads will have differences, there are no emissions components on the J-code, etc. The IP on a j-code is generally a higher output pump than the C-code engine gets. Those c-code engines were more for the 3/4 and under vehicles while the J-code was for the heavier ones, military, etc. Thanks for watching, TJS.

Hi Shawn, The M1008 is the base model 5/4-ton pickup truck based on the K30. The M1009 is the K5 Blazer style 3/4-ton version. The M1010 is the ambulance version of the pickup truck, with a pass-through door going from cab to box (and other various modifications that frankly make this particular model its "own animal). The M1028 is a beefed-up M1008 5/4-ton pick-up, almost identical to the M1008 except with more leaf springs to handle more cargo weight as well as some other communication additions and light modifications. There's also the M1031 which is a chassis-cab model designed to be fitted with various specialized bodies, most commonly the shop/maintenance body. Hope this helps. Which version do you have? So do think my random fuse blowing on the gauges Fuze slot ties in with this issue or not? I have an 86 g30 van with a '91 jcode. I know I have bad ground on the gauges but for the life of le why would it start fine then not later on the 2nd startup. Really weird. So can I test that glow plug solenoid with a meter and look for a dead or just replace it. Thanks! Your super thorough.

@@Mrsmith1082 You can just listen to the relay to see if it is triggering. Have someone turn on the key while you listen for the click. If it does not click, you can ground your glow plug relay trigger as described in the video. If relay clicks, it's working. Really tough to diagnose your issue without being there. Your gauge issue though... Look under your hood... Under the brake booster there are some wires. One in particular is pink with a black stripe. Check that wire for shorts. The shift linkage sometimes wears that wire's insulation out.

26k and your gonna rebuild it? Serious question, why? Not trolling.

HI Chris. I really did it for no other reason but to make a video about it. I had thoughts of maybe putting it into my M1008 to swap out one that had 93K on it, but I sold that truck and this became a strictly video project again. I never personally heard this motor run and mileage means nothing to these as they sat idling for much of their service life.

These Diesel engines are exciting to learn about the 6.2 gets put down because of lack of power but my 85 M-1028 has the gears to help it but I don't want to run it faster than 55mph
@RocknusUrbanCamouflage
@RocknusUrbanCamouflage 3 года назад
They definitely aren't built for speed! I use one of mine as a plow. This thing will pull or push anything! It's all about gearing.

55 mph,id buy a unimog. only good gm diesel,was built by IH,after 2000.

The guy I got it from is well known in MA for his CUCV parts. I believe this engine was beat on and not maintained properly (before he got it), but I believe the claimed mileage to be accurate.

24:35, flat top pistons,,not diesel. diesel are bowl in piston..whats the dia of the exhaust,1",,?.should be 2". like duramax..6.6 the 6.5 gm is same as 6.2, 1"..sad engine..
@RocknusUrbanCamouflage
@RocknusUrbanCamouflage 3 года назад
Hi Phantom, This is most certainly a GM 6.2L J-code diesel and those are most certainly stock diesel pistons. The exhaust for this is 2-1/2 from manifold to muffler and then 2-1/4 from there. My engines are happy! Thank you for watching. Happy to discuss.

Gm using metric and English bolts on the same vehicle was annoying as hell. If they weren't such asses, they'd make everything 8, 13,16, & 19 mm. Then it wouldn't matter.

vaccum pump is where the dissy went,,the heads are 350 chev/buik. not a diesel..there a gm stop gap,as they were too up themselves to go to cummins/cat/IH,or get a real detroit diesel.only one id buy would be the 2000 IH 6.5 td re engineered one,as gm should of done...cheap asses..

Actually, the 6.2 was not built from any other motor. The 6.2 was an original. Thanks for watching, especially since you're apparently not a fan of this particular motor.
