Please keep in mind, I'm not turning the wrenches in this video, only commenting about it while I watch along with you. In this one: Jerred = Wrench turner Andy = Cameraman Chris = Comments from his chair. (Look Ma clean hands!)
In this video Jerred will remove the old glow plugs and install new ones in the 6.2 diesel engine found on the M1008 CUCV or CUC-V trucks and most other 6.2 diesel engines made by General Motors for both the Military and civilian market. He'll replace the wiring connectors from the harness with new Gold plated upgrades and demonstrate how to use a Glow Plug Extractor Tool to remove swollen or damaged glow plugs that may have gone too long between changes. This will help solve hard starting issues related to non-working glow plugs and or bad wiring connections common with 6.2 diesel engines. Replacing the glow plugs in a diesel engine is often overlooked but it should be considered routine maintenance similar to changing spark plugs when doing a tune up on a gasoline engine. The glow plugs only operate for a few seconds to warm the cylinder and fuel charge to help the diesel engine during a cold start. Some may think they're a lifetime service part but they're not. Like anything else, glow plugs will degrade over time and should be replaced on a schedule to keep the diesel engine starting properly. When cold weather arrives you'll be glad your glow plugs are in good shape, because if they're not, the engine may not start.
I'll place a few links to some of the parts and tools used in this video. You need not feel obligated to use them but if you're planning to do this task and you need to purchase these items anyway, by using the links below you'll still pay the same price yet the placement proceeds will support future Subscriber giveaways on the channel like the recent valve spring compressor tool giveaway.

I just changed out all 8 glow plugs on my 1984 GMC 6.2. I sprayed each one with Kroil and let it set overnight. They all came out slick as a whistle.

Good deal! There was only one on this engine that was swollen enough to warrant use of the glow plug puller, the rest came out fairly easy. It seems like there's always that ONE that wants to be difficult. If people would only change them out every now and then I think nobody would have any issues. But, when you buy a used truck, you never really know what you're getting. Thanks!

Wow those are hard to get too. Sure glad I only have 4 glow plugs to worry about. But with that said 2 are behind the injection pump. So changing them requires removal of the pump. I changed them pastime I changed the head gasket. I use the same wire strippers. They work great 👍.Thumbs up to Jared for completing this job.

In my Union City Body step van glow plug access is easy. Remove the plastic wheel well shroud and go straight in over the tire.

We had lots of step vans in the Air Force. Loved to work on those things! Pull that engine cover, have a seat and almost anything can be done while seated (or laying down). Great memories. Thanks!

I've got a manual push button setup on my glow plugs M1008 How long should I hold the button before cranking? I'm in Florida
@KentuckyFriedFixes
@KentuckyFriedFixes 5 месяцев назад
Depends on the temperature. IMO, normally a few seconds is long enough for good glow plugs to heat up. (maybe 5 to 10 seconds) If your glow plugs are good, that's about all the time you'll need to cycle them for a cold start. If you have one or two bad glow plugs chances are the engine will be hard to start and you'll only swell the remaining glow plugs with a longer cycle time trying to compensate for the bad ones.

My m1008 is going through a starter every 6 months ! Even heavy duty starters. Could bad good plugs be burning the starter out so much ? Any help would be great . I was told could be a ground wire
@KentuckyFriedFixes
@KentuckyFriedFixes 9 месяцев назад
Good battery cables and connections are important. Small cables will not allow enough amperage to the starter causing issues. If the starter is cranking too long to start the engine it's likely getting hot. One overheat cycle can kill a starter so you can imagine what happens if the starter overheats every time due to a hard starting engine. New glow plugs will definitely help a hard starting diesel engine spring to life quicker. Faster start up means the starter wasn't overworked and didn't get hot. There's also an issue with the mechanical fuel pumps on these allowing fuel to bleed back thru the line when the engine is turned off. That can also cause hard starting as the engine has to crank long enough for the mechanical fuel pump to pressurize the fuel line going to the injector pump. There's another video on the channel about installing a one way check valve at the fuel filter to solve that issue. To start properly these engines need: 1. Good batteries and cables. 2. Good glow plugs, check or replace every 30K miles. 3. Good mechanical fuel transfer pump. 4. It's also a good idea to install a one way check valve at the fuel filter to correct any fuel bleed back issues in the system. Hope this helps.

Are all military cucvs and the other military trucks always Diesel of did they make gassers too?
@KentuckyFriedFixes
@KentuckyFriedFixes 4 дня назад
Hi Car Guy! As far as I know, and I was in the USAF when these things were introduced, all of them had the 6.2 diesel engine. The Air Force did/does have gas powered trucks too but those weren't the CUCV. I'm sure there are plenty of gas swapped versions out there though as the transmission used is a 400 Turbo and a 6.2 diesel replacement engine isn't common or cheap. Thanks!

The 6.2 diesels are great engines! Jerred has his out and apart at the moment for a rings/bearings refresh. The internal parts still appear to be in great shape though, even a nice cross hatch remaining in the cylinder bore. He originally pulled it because it developed a dead miss, that turned out to be just a burned valve. But, since it's out, new rings, bearings and gaskets/seals regardless! Thanks AL

@KentuckyFriedFixes Месяц назад
@@alshaw9420 Hi AL! Jerred and I have a difference of opinion on engine oil. He likes Shell Rotella 15W40. And I agree it's a good diesel oil, AND the internal parts on his engine looked GREAT, but I personally like Mobil-1 full synthetic 20W50 for Summer and 10W30 for Winter in everything I own. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm nearing 360K miles on my 5cyl Hummer H3 and I don't think luck had anything to do with it. Thanks AL!
