Me replacing my fuel filter. Following the manual for my 1988 6.2 Diesel Suburban. Hopefully this fixes my poor idle issue in the mornings

I want to thank you young man, I removed the filter on my 85 for kicks and bam, no start, I figured I had to prime it but you've made it very easy to understand. Again thank you for taking your time to do the video.

Thank you for the video, it helped me to change the fuel filter on my GM1988 P30 step van, which use to be a postal vehicle. Thank you for taking the time to make this and sharing it.

Thanks for the info love it. I have a 89 surburan 6.2 4x4. That has been in my family since it was brand new. It was rolled over in mileage and has 80k again on it. Love this truck.

Thanks for the great video. You really helped me see what needs to be done step by step... even the mistakes helped me learn what not to do. Thanks again!

Lot of guys replace the square filter with a screw on filter. Your filter is on the front of the engine so it should be easy, there are videos about doing it. My 1983 6.2l G20 was built in Canada. Give me a follow if you should desire, however I'll admit I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm doing it. Good Luck!

The tube is your water separator drain. You can drip it on the warm exhaust manifold to check for water. Also, if you pre-fill the new filter with some diesel or motor oil it will reduce the amount of air that needs to be primed out of the system.

Fyi that book is probably the TM for the truck. A military manual for CUCVs.

Came here after 'draining water' to see if the water in fuel light would quit coming on for 2seconds evrry time Key went in( there was no H20) then, Made MISTAKE of cranking the motor before re-priming the base via top vent w/ i.p. wire connected instead of re-priming the base top vent to a bucket i.p. pink wire off. I fired it up it ran 5 seconds and DIED.. bc AIR LOCKED in the lines from the base air bubble I created from water drain(only like 4 tblspoons of fuel!) .... so i cranked for 30+ sec until battery started slowing down (did this 2 x took 2 breaks and still no start - pissed) ....so watched this vid and learned bc I have no manual....opened my fuel cap, disconnected the pink wire....opened top vent w clear hose and cranked 2-3 sec to easily see fuel run thru clear hose to jug 👍🏻. so....knowing fuel was in the base 100% I knew it was a matter of keep cranking w foot down 50% to open pump ....Plugged pink wire back in, glowed, and cranked again 3rd try to start....about 5 seconds in she started to catch! so i goosed it...she ran 2-3 seconds on own and sputtered died off....so..took a 30 sec break....re glowed a few seconds, she fired up hard this time and I held to floor for a few seconds w belt squeeling and she was FINE let it run 5minutes revving it up to get air out it smoothed out about a minute in. Dont give up! Have good battery! (Optima rules) my M1008 is 12V starter swapped and only 1 alternator and (1) Optima yellow the big 1125ca $300 one. Yes these old bastards (trucks and owners) deserve $300 batteries. You 24V dudes need to swap to 12V and use correct GM part# nose bracket to block mounting and loose the 2nd alternator if your not running crazy accessories. Now any 12V car can jump you w ease and simplicity. The $$ you save not buying 2nd battery will pay for 12V starter. CUCV 2nd battery is ONLY for starts and 2nd alternator is to only recharge that battery from the restart drain. That second alternator only charges for like 5 seconds and just adds complexity underhood and another belt to fk w. The other battery/alternator is normal 12v Cab only like any other vehicle.

Thanks man, just got a 6.2 as my first diesel. I thought this box was a water separator (is it?) and so I took it off and emptied out the contents and put it back on......lol I guess I'm learning by trial and error

What size batteries do you have? Your 6.2 diesel cranks super fast compared to mine
@3SIfan86
@3SIfan86 8 лет назад
He may have a gear reduction starter or an original Direct Drive starter with good brushes. The healthier a direct drive is the faster it spins if the batteries are good. Any 800+ CCA batteries will work fine.

I have two 650 cca batteries. Want to upgrade to a higher cca eventually

Mike Santos that could be why then. The Glow plugs suck a lot of amps themselves, my batteries are tested at 750 CCA now, were 850CCA or so new but still crank well.

Correct battery's are group 65...and there 850 CCA.....

Mike is right. Those are some healthy batteries to crank over a 6.2 with good compression, that fast. I've had both starters, and the gear driven one is slower than the direct drive original. My 83 has huge NAPA commercial 950 CCA batteries, but my 93 with 78 series 815 CCA spin over as fast as this one. Maybe cause they're still new. We'll see how long they last. (I really enjoy the modern latex gloves the new guys are stealing from their mothers kitchen sink. That diesel fuel is such nasty smelling stuff).
