A small nod to FF4 was in the notes in Lapis Manalis. One mentions that they were fighting with the Geraldines and had assassinated their king and sent them into hiding. Geraldine was the last name of Edge, prince of Eblan in FF4 and the area in Garlemald that contains the entrance to Lapis Manalis is the "Eblan Rime". As for the upcoming plot, my theory is that Golbez encountered and devoured an Ascian and the blending of personalities that they took the time to explain in 6.2 likely set him on his current course and provided him with his knowledge of the source and reflections as well as the location of the Zodiark nugget he's been living with for who knows how long. As for the identity of the Ascian, my bet is Pashtarot. He was the "Scion of Light" in FF12 that was tied to... Zeromus.

It's pretty funny (and more realistic) that the reapers tried to assassinate Solus, not for some lofty reason like "he's a genocidal fascist," but because he was cutting their jobs.

Yeah, I was also getting major Chrono Trigger vibes this whole expansion, as well.
