6 Aquarium ALGAE EATERS That Are BETTER Than PLECO
Episode one: • 6 AWESOME Aquarium ALG...
In this video we look at 6 aquarium algae eaters which can be put into an aquarium rather than a pleco fish.
Siamese algae eaters are a favorite of many aquarium keepers as they eat many different types of aquarium algae. The do get quite large however so are not suitable for every aquarium.
Sucking loaches are another fish which are sold as excellent aquarium algae eating fish, which is true when they are young, but as the grow larger they actually reduce or stop eating algae and can actually start becoming aggressive and attack other fish.
Whiptail catfish are an amazing addition to any aquarium regardless of whether they eat algae or not. Some species are not that great at algae eating but others are, so research is required.
Hillstream loach come from fast flowing well oxygenated water and require this in the aquarium. They are great little algae eaters and are a quirky addition to any fish tank.
Often mistaken for a common pleco, ancistrus bristle nose catfish are actually quite different in that they do not get as big and they carry on being good algae eaters throughout their entire life.
Live bearers like mollies, guppies, platies and swordtails are the unsung heroes of aquarium algae eaters and you often don't realize how much they contribute to a clean aquarium until they have died.

You did not mention that flying fox or Chinese algae eater are very aggressive as they grow older. You missed to mention the Amano shrimp. Arguably the best at algae clean up. Coming up at no 2 is Otocinclus catfish.

Chinese algae eater is the only fish I have kept that I would never keep again. I had a golden Chinese algae eater he was like six or seven in and he was absolutely gorgeous. That's fine if I put anything other than mollies and Guppies in the tank with him. He would chase them endlessly until I took them out of the tank

Hello Friends, I hope you are well! I made another video on awesome fish you can add to your tank to eat algae instead of a pleco. There were so many fish I missed in the first video I figured I'd make another episode of it! Please leave a comment if you want and like the video if you enjoy it because it really helps me out! Thank you for watching!

I live in Southern California and there is a recreation area called Lake Balboa in the San Fernando Valley. Don't go there much but once I saw dozens of skeletal plecos that were up to about 3 feet long along a section of shoreline. Obviously people have gotten rid of their overgrown plecos by putting them in the waters around there and they have propagated. I had a couple in a 110 gallon tank once but they never got bigger than about 6 inches, never realizing how large some of them can get until after seeing the dead ones.

I set up my tank November 2014, 5 corydoras, 12 glowlight tetras and 3 otocinclus. Only have 3 corys and 1 otto left but I'm kinda proud how long they have survived. Must be doing something right I guess.

Plexus belong in the toilet bowl. They have become a real problem in many US waterways. They are ugly, grows fast and as they grow becoming less interested in eating algae. They have a nasty habit of stocking to the sides of larger fish to eat the protective slimy coating of fishes.
@myleerose31866
@myleerose31866 3 года назад
@@speedmaster001 I am aware of this, I lived in Florida and they are evvverywhere! But ...I keep only one in each of my summer ponds so there is no chance of breeding. They tend to become slime suckers when they are under fed...like in pet stores. For anyone who has one turned slime sucker, put it in a tank by itself and give it pleco wafers, till it learns to eat properly. Anyone finding them in the wild SHOULD destroy them.

I get that this video is about algae eating fish but i I think people looking for solutions to their algae problems should not over looks snails. Most are small but ferocious algae eaters and especially suitable for smaller tank sizes (if keep alone) but in larger there are species that only reproduce in salt water but can can be keep in freshwater.

My hillstream loaches never eat algae. They feed on the glass surface for days and days and the green never changes. I read they feed on things that live in the algae, not the algae itself.
@giftofthewild6665

So how much algae is too much/little algae for these fish? Say i want a 10-15 gallon tank, a reasonable number of fish for that tank and say, some Siamese eaters to clean up. Is there a sweetspot? I want them to always have somethin to eat with a little bit of surplus just in case Also is there a difference between algae and "waste" eaters? Like if i wanted a fish to suck up all the shite on the floor to kinds reduce the need for maintanance

@@arshsharma2366 if you're not worried about your shrimp being eaten and I would definitely try the SAE they are incredible cleaners when they are young. But as they get older and bigger they start munching on other things like shrimp. They are omnivores. The hill streams are awesome and cool looking too. I haven't seen them munching on any shrimp. Maybe they just eat them after they have passed. They are omnivores also. But they stay much smaller than SAE's.
