You seem to be one of the few advanced instructors that advocate memorizing shapes and patterns. Many of the others seem to be a bit down on that; they emphasize knowing the chord tones by note name and knowing the fretboard through and through as a superior way. But let’s be honest, one is not going to be able to instantly name every note as soon as your finger touches it, especially when soloing or playing faster songs or riffs like you’re a computer or something. I can see how memorizing patterns and shapes that applicable to other areas of the fretboard is necessary and useful. Obviously, knowing both approaches is best, but that takes years of study and practice. Thanks Dan.
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses Год назад
Thanks, Scott. You put it very well: you should know both and I’ll also add you should know the sound a pattern will create. I’m a very visual person and patterns have really helped my playing so that’s why I teach them. There are of course, other methods to learn.

Your talking about playing naturally without all the thinking and what key am I in or which mode am I using, of course we should know key were in, to say I’m going to use pentatonic scale for this or that would kinda be mechanical.
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 11 месяцев назад
@@warwickdennis4114 It would be mechanical if you make it sound like that but it can also be a useful thing (amongst others) to think about.
@scottkretsch4887
@scottkretsch4887 10 месяцев назад
@@OnlineBassCourses “the sound a pattern will make”. Never really thought about that, but yes, I understand how that can be useful. It’s like interval ear training, but for a group of notes played together, i.e. pattern, instead of just a single note distance from the root.

When you play a cromatice run into a chord..(Entire Akashic records passes before eyes looking for the right eloquent descriptive and technical words and the and the doppler effect on our ancient memories) ..it sounds good. That was a good lesson, go slow and play clean. You have a pleasant and calming aura.

I greatly appreciate the visual approach to teaching in this video. As someone who learns best visually, the use of shapes and patterns is incredibly helpful for grasping the fundamentals before delving into the specifics of each note. This content deserves a far greater recognition for its clarity and effectiveness. I've been a follower of your channel for approximately three years, and I consistently find the information you provide to be of exceptional quality. Your ability to deliver straightforward, clear, and no-frills instruction is truly commendable. Keep up the excellent work!

I provide a (free) PDF (without sign up) for almost all of my pattern lessons. I have literally hundreds of them on my site. That’s so that people can download them (for free without having to sign up to anything) and study them at their own pace. Other times, I’m making stuff up using those patterns. Don’t worry about exactly what I’m doing. There’s usually a principle that I want people to follow. I could spoon feed and always show exactly what I’m doing but I’m not really into that. 🙏

Scotland. Noam Chomsky has written over 200 academic papers, 150+ books, has made a contribution to his field of linguistics with his theory of syntactic structure & has a net worth of $500,000. Doctor Jordan Peterson since leaving academia has attained a wealth of $10 million+ There's money to be made, talking up nonsense for the right, which includes big corporations.
