In my view, the operational expenses of these vehicles do not render them cheap. While their initial purchase cost may be low, it does not encompass the total cost of owning these cars at all.
I wouldn’t overlook the 330d though, the 335d might have more bang per buck, but the 330d is still a barnstormer of a car. The N57 is a great engine, but the B57 is the one to have if funds will stretch. Also buying premium diesel like Shell V power can stop carbon build ups. It’s worked for me for 5 + years.
👌only counter is that it's possible to find good used 330ds, but I suspect nigh-on impossible to find a good 335d - they're so quick, most passed through multiple owners' hands all getting THRASHED to bits. 👌
I drive to amsterdam a couple of times a year and have driven all the way to Spain twice and my favourite car I've driven long distance with friends is the Range Rover Evoque. A lot of people slate it but in the spec mine was in it was comfortable, drove well and had no issues whatsoever even after the long journeys. If I could pick any car for a long road trip though it would be an RS6 or a VW T-Roc R.
aww man, this is so hard to choose! if i had to pick 1 tho, it'd have to be the brera-it's just so beautiful! still, all these cars are quite nice and (most) look fun to drive!
Where was your road trip? I've gone to Venice from Manchester 3 times - first two in my Saab 9-3 (2006) and last year in my Jaguar XF R-SPORT (2016). Each time it was 4 of us (my family) and it the Jag which didn't have a single problem, despite their reputation for unreliability.
I reckon you can get more economy than that too. I've got a 3.4 981CS (white one as seen on this channel!) and I get 45mpg+ on long runs without much trouble. Porkers are tough to beat for...basically anything. Every Porsche sports car in the last 15 years at least has horrific road noise though, out of interest is that an issue on the 986 at all? Not that I'd get one, I want tech when I switch but I'm intrigued to know if it's always been a Porsche thing!
@@ApothecaryTerry road noise is not an issue below 70 but quickly becomes one at higher speeds, so I guess it depends what your preferred cruising speed is. I’m about to experiment with sealing the windows better, I reckon that will have a big impact on it. And yeah, I get 38 to the gallon when driving slow on the motorway and normally elsewhere.
@@charliewest2889 That all sounds about what I'd expect, the 981 is also not too bad below 65-70 but on long motorway journeys it's a bit tiring. Most things I've test driven (15 drives so far) as potential replacements have had other issues that would make them equally tiring though, plus obviously none drive like a Porsche! They're damned hard things to sell 😂
@@ApothecaryTerry You won’t find anything modern that can replace it, Porsche are one of the only brands left that makes their small cars as well as the big ones it seems! Maybe an alpha 4c or a110 are comparable but I’m sure picking between those 3 is simply preference
@@charliewest2889 4C is definitely more of a raw experience, I've done 4x 5 hour journeys this month in the Porsche but the 4C would have been awful for those! The A110 though, apparently those are quieter, I am tempted to at least test drive one. I think you're right though- it'll be pretty similar. Think I'm going to have to compromise a bit- keep the Porsche and buy a 2nd car 😂 If only I had the space (and money)...
The Brera would be the perfect cheap(ish) 2 person road -tripper, if only it didn't have a 50/50 chance of not making it all the way around the road trip. I test drove an F-Type 5 days ago and...meh. My dream car for a road trip is definitely the current Conti GT or the Panamera. Having driven a rich-idiot-spec Panamera, they're impressive. However, road trips are basically my life now, lots of long drives for work, so I've been looking at this for...let's say a £50k budget realistically, but really I'll spend less. Boring as it sounds, the GS450h is still king. Hot hatches mostly suck as hot hatches now, but they're actually pretty good at this job now too - an FK8 is a great GT, same goes for a 7.5 Golf R. Neither is fun, at all, but for road trips they're top choices. Cheap road trip though, you need practicality, reliability and performance but with 3-4 passengers handling isn't too important. Honestly I'm picking an E350d estate.
if you go with these for a long trip except the lexus all the others will probably fail in the middle of the trip. Also lexus has 33-35 mpg in the ''real world''. Come on really a road trip with a jaguar?????? REALLY?
