My most challenging trip of 2019, The Obabika Loop, 6 Days Alone in the Wilderness, Ludicrous Log Jams is up and I am so excited! I had been wanting to check out Obabika Lake in Temagami, Ontario for quite a while now and go on another solo canoe camping trip there. Over the August long weekend, I finally had enough days off where I could do a loop of the area, and could not wait. I spent 6 days exploring, got to spend some time with native elder Alex Mathias, visited a historical place Wakimika Beach, did some gnarly portages, spent a lot of time pulling myself and my fully loaded canoe over downed trees and beaver dams on Nasmith Creek and climbed and overcame some massive log jams and obstacles on the Obabika River. I was definitely put through some serious challenges on this trip and experienced a lot of things I never have before. Once again Temagami gave as good as I got and it was one the best backcountry loop ever. Come check out this beautiful area with me in my latest series, The Obabika Loop, one of my favourite and most challenging trips of all time!

I can remember back in 1976 I was in the junior rangers with the ministry of natural resources in Timmins and one of our duty's was to canoe routes and to clear ways through the log jams guess that's some thing they don't do anymore such a shame

So. Many. Log. Jams. Next time affix a chain saw to the front of your canoe. Turn it on. Head down the river. We'll rename your canoe The Murder Boat. Honestly though, I cannot believe how many log jams there were.

Great video! We did a loop through Temagami this past summer as well, and tried taking a short cut that ran us into... log jams. Mind you, it's the difficult portages that get you into the lakes where you can (finally) enjoy solitude and serenity, away from the masses. And great fishing! We went by kayak, which proved to be a little difficult on the more complicated portages.
@CamperChristina

I think a chainsaw and lots of time is the answer to this trip! I cringed every time another logjam appeared. I'd have dumped trying to get in or out. So if it had been thunder and lightning, would you just pull off and wait no matter how long? Crazy!
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 3 года назад
HAha but then you’d have had to carry that chainsaw and all the fuel the entire way also. Lol. I know 2 guys who went through this route a few weeks before me and had barely any issues as the water was way higher. Luck of the draw I guess? But I loved getting through it when I did. This was one of my most cherished days in Temagami because it was one of the hardest I’ve experienced and i got through. And yes I’d have had to stop somewhere somehow, of the weather had turned like that. Thankfully, it didn’t. Hope you enjoyed the series. Can’t wait to see what you discover next? Cheers !

Hi Christina, seems like a very nice trip with such a variety of challenges and also being out for almost a week. In my opinion a tripon several day gives a different feeling of wilderness connection, just to know that you are not heading back home tomorrow, it become more relaxing but you are also more dependent on good planning, experience and the right gear. Your canoe is so nice, if it was even lighter you could almost use it as an air baloon and it could carry you over the portages...but seriously, it looks so robust even though its very portable. The hauling and pushing through the log piles didnt seem like fun, I dont have hardly any experience with that problem. Anyway, very good video even with all the struggle. Bo Nilsson
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 5 лет назад
HI Bo. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. I don't find any difference in being out for one night or five. I alway feel like I am away and in the wilderness and find the feeling the exact same. My canoe is definitely very strong and hahaha, not that light. It's 30lbs, plus my pack is around 55 and then I have the small pack I carry with the canoe, so technically I was pulling about 90lbs over each log jam and I did all but one with the canoe fully loaded. Glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers!

Hi again, just want to tell you how impressed I am of your productions, you seem to be out most weekends and do your videos and then home and edit.How do you make it ? I think you mentioned that you have a full time work in some video way back, and I know it definitely take some time to do, with experience of course its quicker but still. I have missed out on your later videos because I had serious eye surgery, could not see, could not drive in about two weeks, so now I have to catch up...

@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 4 года назад
I did a little but I’m not patient and there wasn’t enough time. I can’t stay away from work too long so I only had so many days to do the loop and fishing is not the main goal for me. I love exploring and overcoming the challenges. That’s more my thing. 😊
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 4 года назад
Unfortunately I only have so much time to get through each area and to the next campsite. Fishing is generally best at sunrise and sunsets and at sunrise I am on my way out trying to get on the water before the winds pick up and it gets too hot and at sunset I’m just too tired. Cheers.

Wow, what an amazing trip this was!! There is something really special about Obabika Lake that really draws me to it. Probably because how it's sacred to the indigenous people in several ways. Absolutely loved the visit with Alex! Would you say this loop is more advanced than the Temagami loop you did this year with all the waterfalls, equal or not quite as advanced? This was very grueling, but that one had the most insane portages!
@CamperChristina
@CamperChristina 2 года назад
Thank you so much Richard. I’m glad you found this series. It’s a good one! Have you seen the twinkle Lake loop yet? Or the trip where I see the lynx? Lol. So many fun adventuress ! I really loved this trip a lot as well. I don’t know if I can compare it to the waterfalls trip. There are so many differences. I also know someone that did this route three weeks before me and had no issues with the log jams on the river or low water in the Naismith. Just sailed right through. That section was exhausting. I think overall this was more challenging but because of the conditions I had at the time. If the water levels were higher it would be a different story I think ? Alex is awesome. He’s in a few other videos of mine. One is the changing of the seasons ceremony which I think you’ll really like it’s a two-part video series and the other one is a trip I did with a friend of mine named Sue on Obabika lake.

@@CamperChristina You're very welcome! I thought I had seen that set, but double checking it now, I haven't, so I've bookmarked it so it ready to start after I finish the Florence Lake set I've just started! Can you tell I'm obsessed with Temagami? lol Algonquin and Killarney are both amazing, but there's just something about Temagami that draws me in more. It's much more raw and rugged, with much less people, so it's truly wilderness I suppose. I will most definitely check out the Changing of the Seasons ceremony, that's so awesome you have a video of that! And thanks so much again for all your hard work, it's very much appreciated!

@CamperChristina 4 года назад
Bwahaha not sure if you know how heavy a chainsaw is but it’s not something I would ever carry on a trip like this, plus the fuel. That’s a huge amount of extra weight and also very dangerous to use on a solo backcountry trip. Depending on the water level and what time of year it is sometimes this route is totally possible and all of those log jams are buried under the water. Cheers! water.bbCheers !

Hahaha, thanks. It's so true. A canoe trip is just like life and also box of chocolates. LOL I am pretty proud. This was a challenging trip for me. I had never climbed a log jam before. LOL. I'm not quite sure what you mean about my car?
@borealiswan2363
@borealiswan2363 5 лет назад
@@CamperChristina What I mean is that leaving one's car in the woods for several days, or in an area with some traffic, is sometimes considered risky because prowlers could come round to steal it or what's inside. What some people do to discourage vandalism is put a sign in the window saying "car broke down, no valuables inside". One Utuber, Kenneth Kramm, gave this example. I was just wondering if you were concerned about anything happening to your car while you hike for a few days.
