My name is Camper Christina and I love the outdoors! I also enjoy videos and creating them. I added this channel to share my passion of the outdoors and video making. I head out on lots of adventures, year round, and most are solo adventures. I hope you subscribe to my channel and give me a chance to show you some of the awesome places I visit, and share in my love of the outdoors and outdoor adventures!
I love this. It has been several decades since I have spent time in Northern Ontario. I currently live in California. I was reminiscing about canoeing and spending time at the cabin near North Bay with nothing to do but float in the water and read by the fire. That was the 80s. Living vicariously through you now that I am retired. How do you charge your phone in the middle of nowhere? Do you get cell service in Algonquin Park? Sorry for such a rudimentary questions.
Thanks so much for checking out my video and taking the time to comment. I use a portable charger for my phone. And some parts of Algonquin do you have cell service and other parts do not. Depends where you are. You can find a list of all of the gear that I use on my trips with links to the products and descriptions on my website at camperchristina.com. Let me know if I can assist further? Cheers!
Why did you get wet feet with water socks? It kind of defeats the purpose. I am considering buying some but have not done my research yet and your experience does not give me high hopes. What rubber shoes are you using? Thank you.
I’m not wearing water socks on this trip. This trip is from six or seven years ago. I have rubber boots on from woods Canada because it was very cold out and I switched to them after changing my trip plans after not getting through the route I planned. I am not wearing water socks. Please be a bit kinder when you comment on my posts, please. I would really appreciate it, thank you. 😊 the answers are there if you watch all the videos in the series. You can find them in the description or at the end of each video. If you see the whole trip it’ll make more sense to you. Thank you
@@CamperChristina Aren't you talking about water socks at 16:40? I did watch the whole video but maybe you forgot what you posted in your own videos? It is OK but please do not be rude towards me. What has been unkind about my comments? Serious question. Wow. I ask you about the different things you use, routes etc. What is wrong with that? Wow, do you maybe misread my comments? Do you go through some hard/vulnurable times? I was shocked to read your response as there has been nothing unkind in my questions but I am all ears.
@@Alien2799 Yes, so very sorry. You are 100% correct. I had forgotten that part of the trip. Yes, I have published around 400 videos since this trip, and I didn't recall having the socks this early on. I apologize. These water socks are very old. I have gone through about 5 pairs since this trip, one for every season, usually. These socks were not very tall and if you go in the water in low water socks and the water is above the top of the sock, the water will come in from the top a bit. They were also pretty beat up looking in the video, so they membrane had probably had some tears in it. These are nothing like the socks I've had the past few years. They have improved them greatly from when I first started using them. The Leakdry ones are knee high and you have to go in pretty deep for the water to go above the top seal, but they are said to still work regardless. I haven't tested them to that extent yet, but I will and keep you posted. Yes, we all have bad days and there are a lot of people who are not very nice on social meda, especially to women doing what I do. Like any human I get upset and have rough days. That is no excuse however, and again, I apologize if I said something that upset you. Have a great evening!
@@CamperChristina Thank you for your response. However, I still do not know why you said that I was unkind. Yes, it upset me greatly as my comments are not unkind at all. I am especially careful with it unless someone attacks me first. I started to think that you are losing it or that you are a bully LOL
In early September I was in that area... North River. It's an awesome area but with low water. I've seen about a dozen bears in the woods. I bring bear spray but have never felt the need to use it. Even when a mother and her 2 cubs were within 40 feet of me. Never felt threatened. Love the video
My Sunday morning treat watching this video and neglecting my own tenting activities. Very pretty campsites. I like lots of shade because my Nordic roots don't allow me to tolerate heat very well. I got criticized for deciding not to bring my bear spray anymore, I've never had a use for it. I see lots of bears in town and in the bush but never at my campsite. They only visit when I'm away. I think they know when I'm there. I feel like I've been accepted as a perennial presence, the only human in the area.
Wow that paddle at the beginning is my favourite kind of paddling. I just love small winding creeks. As always I think you got the best campsite with all the perfect amenities. Can’t wait to see the meal all cooked up. Thanks so much❤️
Really liking your campsite ,nice sitting area bonus table views are not too bad either , Your meals made me hungry but then you always have tasty meals and snacks , sucks that it rained but at least you got to check your area of the lake which lovely. nice to see you fishing love it myself hope the rain stops .
Hi Christina, you’ve made a great video with amazing scenery! I love your content and I just Subscribed to your channel! Keep the amazing work coming! 👏🏻😀
Thank you so much Julian. I really appreciate you taking the time to say that. I hope you enjoy my channel. If you’re new, you’ve got about 600 adventures to watch. lol. Lmk if I can recommend something. Cheers ! 😊😊😊
Beautiful river awesome weather lovely lake and campsite , Can't blame you having bear spray one never knows if they will have black bear company , I think they'd run off though and avoid us , still they are curious. We are all so blessed to have such beautiful areas to go like this in Canada .
Well the one I saw in Quebec didn’t run off but I also didn’t feel extremely scared of it. I felt bad actually for trying to shoo it. Thanks so much. Cheers
Oh I wouldn't feel bad to shoo it off, I feel its good for them to be afraid of us , Nice to see them though . will you have a video of you showing the bear, I remember the Lynx you saw , your blessed for that, That is one animal I have not seen.
You are on a special list to see the videos before they’re released in February after I present on the trip at the spring shows. I haven’t made them yet though. lol. It’s been busy for me this season. Lots going on. I don’t know your experience with bears, but I felt bad shoeing it away. It was super cute and all it was doing was walking around in the forest that it knows and lives in and I was yelling at it to leave. I don’t think that’s very nice and I felt bad about it. He did not threaten me or act hostile in any way and I was in his home. 🤷🏻♀️ Just me.
Beautiful weather, your choice of campsite, looks like a nice time. By the way, you’re a brave soul for going in that cold water. Thanks for sharing, be well my friend.
Lol the water was not cold at all. I just always find it a shock to my system at first. I was actually in there for quite a while and went back in a few times throughout the day. Great to hear from you. Hope you are well.
That was hilarious when you caught that mussel LOL Not sure why he said that was a horrible campsite unless he was talking about the one with the toilet paper.
I’m not sure I’ve ever caught one of those before? Glad you got a kick out of it. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. I didn’t get a chance to double check part two and three so if you see anything that looks off please let me know. lol. Cheers !!!
This was a horrible campsite? I didn’t think so. I really liked it. Why did you think it was horrible? Just curious as everybody has different needs and requirements for their campsites. Cheers ! 😊
@@CamperChristina no no no -- I mean the campsite that you explored at the end of the lake that was on the portage!!! I'm sorry, I see I was not clear in my comment!
I love your videos, Christina, and I’m happy to hear that you’ll be presenting at the Outdoor Adventure Show in February. A friend and I are planning to go. I’m 71 and my daughter took me on a long-promised canoe trip in Algonquin in August. We did a route from one of Kevin Callan’s books, Kingscote Lake to Scorch Lake. Three long portages but Scorch Lake was gorgeous. It was the most amazing experience of my entire life!
This will be my seventh year presenting at the Toronto show. I have done the trip from kingscote to scorch as well. You will not find it on my RU-vid, as it’s an older trip but It is on my blog. I took a kayak on those portages. lol. Good times. I think it’s awesome that your daughter took you. I hope I get to meet you. I generally announce on my Facebook page where I’m going to be each day and what I’m going to be wearing so people are able to find me easily. Usually, when I’m not presenting, I am at the H2O booth. Thanks so much for commenting. Cheers!
I'm surprised to hear with all your trips and you've never come across a bear. Looking forward to when you share the story. It'll be hard to beat the Lynx video, that was a good one. Just make sure that plastic tie on the spray doesn't prevent you from using it quickly, if ever needed you don't want to fumble around for something to cut the plastic. Tie a small piece of string to the orange safety and attach it to the small loop in the finger handle.
lol. Thanks so much for commenting and for checking out the video. I obviously took the zip tie off as soon as I finished making the video. 🤦🏻♀️ cheers!
Awesome time shared with you as always. Great looking scenery and yummy food. Hearing those gunshots would really put me on edge. You’re so brave. Have to wonder where some peoples head is at. Thanks again for taking us along.❤️
Hi, just dehydrated a bunch of stuff two days ago. I made hashbrowns using shredded potatoes for the first time. I’ll be trying that out soon. I also dehydrated watermelon, which is quite tasty. 😊
These are also all on my website. I’m sorry to sound like a broken record, but I have all the information posted so you can easily access it. I use a high Sierra backpack to carry the bear vault. It is not waterproof. It’s just a regular small backpack and I carry it with the canoe. I do not use a canoe barrel. I use a BV 500 .it is 11.5 litres. www.rei.com/product/768902/bearvault-bv500-journey-bear-canister Cheers!
Love this video. I do have a couple of questions. What do you wear on your feet in the cool fall for getting them wet etc. . You mention water socks.. what kind? And what kind of water boots do your wear? so they stay warm. And what do you wear for pants ? As I also paddle with a double blade.. but it drips the cold water on you? What material is your paddle and what is the seat you have on your canoe seat .
Hi Krystine. Thank you. I’m glad you liked the video. Thank you for all of the questions, as well. You can find everything I wear and use on my trips on my website at camperchristina.com including links to all of the products with full descriptions and pricing for most of them. For all canoe tripping trips, I wear water socks and keen sandals. The water socks I’m currently using are made by a company called Leakdry and they’re fantastic. They have different thickness of socks based on the time of year. If you are using a double blade and it is dripping on you, it might not be long enough or you may not be using your paddle correctly. I rarely ever have drips on me from the paddle. During shoulder season and depending on the water temperatures, I will wear tights with rain pants over them or a drysuit. Check out my website and let me know if you have more questions. Cheers.
You can find the canoe seat that I use, the double blade that I use and the length, and that type of information under the tab for boats. You can find what I wear on my trips under clothing and you can find everything else under gear.
@@CamperChristina sorry one more question. your socks.. what size foot do you have and what size sock did you order. I have a pair of sealskin socks. I ordered the size M as I am a ladies 8.5. but they are big and bulky? I don't want to make the same mistake with leak dry as they are American and I won't be able to return as easily. thanks
I would contact them through instagram and ask. Jay is awesome and will help you. I honestly cannot remember what size I ordered and I’m in the middle of packing for two back-to-back trips. Jay helped me pick a size. He’s awesome.
Isn't on Wolf Lake the Paradise Lagoon? Is it where you saw the water bottles and pliers? I recommend using a very fine pasta when camping. I believe it is called angel hair pasta? You just put it in boiled water for 2 minutes and it is ready to eat. It is healthy too as it is made from rice and water. At least the one I see in stores is made from rice. White or brown. Do you split wood when preparing wood for the fire? Thank you
If you continue watching the videos, you will see paradise Lagoon. Thank you for the comment. You will also see that I did use Angel hair pasta. lol. Thank you for the recommendation. I do not split wood. I do not carry an ax. I baton it in winter or when it’s wet with a knife with a full tang. But only so that when it’s wet wood. I generally burn small pieces. I have no need for a large fire and don’t like wasting wood. Cheers
Part 1 - 1:38 , 2:38, 8:36, 24:09. Just a few, I quickly scanned through the video to find for you. You can check any Temagami map or google map on your phone or computer.
Oh, one more question, please. How was the car parking at the being of your trip? I assume that it was a public parking lot? Does it normally get full? Is it safe? Thank you
Thanks so much for commenting. Parking was fine at the beginning of my trip. There is a public parking lot at matagamasi. It is free as are all the access parking areas in Temagami. I have never had an issue with my car and I have parked there many many many times. I can’t say if anyone else has had issues. Cheers.
@@CamperChristina There is no free access at Kukagami or Maskinonge Lakes. At Kukagami the only access is at the Sportsman Lodge and at Maskinonge there is a campground that I would imagine charges money too. Do you know anything otherwise? Thank you
@@Alien2799 The access is at Matagamasi. Not kukagami or muskinonge. It’s a public access and you can find it on several maps like FOT or Jeff’s map. It is access #26. I have parked there many times.
I enjoy your videos, Christina. Speaking of which, I would like to become better at taking pictures and videos when in nature. Any tips on that? What do you use and how did you learn to take such a great diary of your trips? How do you do your navigation? I am doing it the hard way. I have a GPS and a map and compare them more often than I would like to. The issue with the GPS is that the screen is tiny so you need to constantly zoom in and out to find the info you need and it is annoying and time consuming. Probably uses a lot of batteries too. Last question :) Do you have access to weather reports when paddling? How so? Thank you!
Hi! Thanks for the comment. It sounds like you might benefit from taking a look at my website at camperchristina.com. You can find all of the information on all the gear and everything I use on my trips there and it would answer a good portion of your questions. All of my pictures and videos are taken with an iPhone. I didn’t learn how to take pictures so I’ve just been doing it most of my life. I use a few different things for navigation, depending on where I am. There is an app you can get on your phone called Avenza where you can upload maps that will show your location on it and you can see exactly where you are. I also bring a hardcopy of a map wherever I go in case something happens to my phone. I have also taken many courses on Map and Compass and navigation. I do not have access to Weather reports when I am out. I just look at the sky. Before I head out on a trip if I’m not going to have any cell service, I screenshot the hourly forecast for my journey and check it every morning. Otherwise I just go by experience. I have been backcountry camping for 22 years and Solo camping since 2015. it takes time to learn things and get experience but courses would definitely help if you’re unconfident or unsure. Cheers
If you are new to backcountry camping, I do have an online course called backcountry camping for beginners. You can also find the link for that on my website at camperchristina.com and usually at the end of every video.
Beautiful waterfall. Very impressive. I heard loud explosions at my lake also, but I heard rumors that the harvesters are planning a winter cut nearby, so perhaps its part of the process. My lake waters are the lowest I've seen them. The canoe is scraping over rocks I used to float above. And much of the flora is turning brown. But at least there are no flies. Next week I'll enjoy the rain.
