There is a German restaurant we eat at occasionally in New York, and on their appetizer list they have a plate of 5 or 6 mixed sausages. The wild boar sausage is definitely the best one, although they are all good. Their sauerkraut is made in house and is fantastic too! Just a hint of sweetness and sauer.
When a boy in 1950s Sheboygan Wisconsin, we had small neighborhood grocery stores each of which had their own little meat market!! Most of these made their own Bratwurst and some their own Summer Sausage!! With time most faded away except the really good ones!! Today Johnsonville out in Sheboygan County makes a great Brat widely distributed for grilling!! High fat content which serves well on a hot charcoal grill. Johnsonville also makes the best hot dog you have ever had but not widely distributed!! In Sheboygan my Grandfather Wagners neighborhood market was the last enterprise standing. They moved just outside of town in a huge facility and make the brats you would dream of!! in cure meats competition in Minneapolis, they have taken many Number Ones sometimes losing out to a Lancaster County Pennsyvania Amish Sausage Maker!! Miesfelds also makes a great Garlic Summer Sausage!! God Speed!!
When I was born my dad was playing Quit Que Oc and buying 2 doz. Brats at Poths meats somewhere in the Sheboygan area. I guess it was a forerunner of Johnsonville.
@@ernee100 I moved into that neighborhood when I was married 30 years ago. Poth's meat market was located on the south side of Sheboygan, 1501 S 8th street was their address. They were still in business then, and sadly 2 years later they went out of business. Their bratwurst was very good.
@@joannepeterson7896 thank you so much for giving me the update. I'm a Mequon boy, but live out-of-country. I've scoured Google maps for days looking for it.
Your method in tackling Bratwurst and passed sausages is definitely less overwhelming. I didn’t know that there’s a “healthy” version of bratwurst - Thrüringer... good to know 😊
7:41 - this Kartoffelbratwurst is really tasty. This market at Konstablerwache (20 Minutes from FRA airport by direct train), where they sell tasty beer, too (Brauerei Bierbacher) is open on Thursdays and Saturdays only.
You are wrong! Just ask: Vo ist Shnell Imbiss? Bratwurst, Currywurst, Frickadelle, Pomme Frites and Zenf! Aaaahhhh every GI rememberers the best “Brachi” stand nearerst to his barracks. Sorry for my poor Deutsche. Vohne in. Paderborn, Nord Rhine Westphalia.
The only thing that I understood is that I am wrong. I don't think I want to understand the rest though. But if it's constructive, please write in German:)
Sadly, Lidl GB has stopped selling Nuremburger Bratwurst, much to my sorrow, and I am not sure where else I can get them in the UK; and right now we can't really get to Germany. Best sausage I ever had was a Thuringer Bratwurst from a street stall in Germany. British sausages can also be very nice, but you do get what you pay for....
Oh I am sorry to hear that. Are there any international stores in bigger cities in UK where you could get it? If I look for British cheeses I always find them in international stores here in Frankfurt.
In northern Vermont, we have a bratwurst that's flavored with beer from a local brewery. Can't remember the name right now, but man, these are so good with homemade relish or hot pepper jelly! I hear there are lots of dilfferent wursts in Germany (such as blutwurst and Leberkäse). I would love to try them all.
Hi, I'm in the Montpelier area. My mom was from Germany and I know what blutwurst is. In case you don't know it's blood sausage with pieces of tongue in it. The rest of my family loved it when they could get it. Me, I had to pass.......
Wow.....this can be confusing. I had a sausage/brat once (not in Germany) that was white in color, very smooth texture and had a fairly strong (not overpowering) taste of pepper. Any idea what that may have been? Thank you in advance.
Local discount grocer of all places makes the best bratwurst. Spices might be slightly different than in Germany, but think coarse fresh. My favorite one is the one he adds Jalapeno peppers and Cheddar cheese. They go real good on the smoker.
Thinking of the fat content of sausages, are there high levels of heart attacks or heart disease in Germany. Fat is important for flavour and juiciness so what cooking method is best to remove some of that fat.
Eating some Ketchup with a bratwurst is totally fine in my opinion casue food habbits are changing all the time and nor only for children to eat it with ketchup cause it compliments the spices
Growing up in Stuttgart as a kid to when I went to college in Munich I went to the October fest almost every year. The one thing that was a must have was Bratwurst and German mustard.
Great video! I've actually never tried bratwurst. I picked up a pack at my local Aldi when I didn't want regular hot dogs. I grilled it, put it on a hot dog bun with some mustard...really good! Judging from your video, keeping it simple is a fine choice.
The Nurnnerger Brats that you showed remind me of a sausage that used to be made by "South Side Sausage" in Milwaukee called "Polish Delights" - they went out of business in the late 1970's, but I still have FANTASTIC memories of coming into my Grandma's kitchen and there would be a big pot of them simmering away. In Wisconsin - Bratwurst is the "National Dish"(of course ALWAYS washed down with BEER). Thanks for sharing your wonderful videos - I CAN'T WAIT to tour Germany and sample some of the Greatest Foods on Earth - BRATWURST !!!
Oh Jack, I wish that traveling will be possible soon and that you eat all Kinds of Bratwurst here in Germany ☺️ they won’t be made with beer, but I can assure you - they will be beyond delicious ☺️
Ein sehr gutes Video über deutsche Bratwurst! Grüße aus Sachsen, wo wir besonders im Garten / auf dem Grundstück sehr oft u.a. Bratwürste grillen. A very good video about German bratwurst! Greetings from Saxony, where we grill especially in the garden / on the property very often among other things bratwurst.
Hello , after 1989 , when comunist party went down in my country , somebody went to your country, he brought some sausages that i cannot find in your presentation, they were big sausages with white membrane and they were made with beer, they were delicious, do you know this kind of sausages?
Hallo , Wir haben Deutschland vor 8 Jahren verlassen, and yesterday we bought bratwurst. Is not the same as in Germany of course but we miss the Deutsche bratwurst. Gruess aus New York!
It all looks so good, would love to try every version. I buy or make bratwurst when I have time but it is usually all ground pork. I love the course ground but that is mostly because I have never really tried the fine ground bratwurst. They looked good too. I have meatloaf on the grill now but wish I had some bratwurst smoking now too. Thanks Marta.
Hahahah! Oh no! I hope you could still enjoy your meatloaf! I also need to make Bratwurst one day. Are there in the US some butchers making Bratwurst German way?
@@cooking-the-world The meatloaf on the smoker turned out pretty tasty. They make bratwurst of all kinds but I am not sure it is the German way but it is all good, especially when it is fresh. I usually rough grind mine and add the spices. I bought some in the store at the butcher window that had green onions in it..........that was very good too. With this Chinese flu going around, more little butcher shops are opening up so there should be lots of choices again. i.imgur.com/GRyqdpZ.jpg
Wow, the meatloaf looks amazing. It doesn't take so long to smoke it, right? I am glad that you have good butcher who makes good fresh sausages. That's in the end all you need if you are grill/bbq lover ;)
@@cooking-the-world Thanks, depends how hot the smoker is. This was about a 2 pound loaf at 240 deg, it took about 1 1/2 hours with some hickory wood and I put some cherry habanaro barbecue sauce on it at the end.
Of course it depends on the temperature, silly me. I am always amazed by how many bbq sauces you have in the US. I just got 2 bbq sauces from one of the food tour attendees from Texas I cannot wait to try them! :)
Traditionel Currywurst in Berlin was only the wurst, topped with curry powder, Worcestershiresauce and sheere ( pure ??? ) tomatoketchup ! No BBQ sauce, no curryketchup, only tomatoketchup ! No Bourbon, no spices, and that was the best for ever ! You can´t get it anymore ! And the Thüringer Rostbratwurst ( Rostbratwurst ! ) is´nt anymore the same as in the former DDR ( GDR ), meanwhile it is degenerated !
what is the word for saurkraut in german? because NO ONE seems to know what that is everytime i order bratwurst. it's like they never heard of the word before.
Sauerkraut in German is Sauerkraut. You can check pronunciation on RU-vid. I think I might know where the problem is. Where are you ordering Bratwurst wit Sauerkraut? Because the only place where you could have it is a restaurant. Germans don’t eat their Bratwurst in bread roll with Sauerkraut. They might refuse to serve it that way.
@@cooking-the-world haha, i guess that would be teh problem thanks for the informatino. Im making a video on how to grill bratwurst (in a big truck) in beer. should be interesting & fun. thanks
Wow! 1330! That's.....very advanced for those days, isn't it? They had sausage making technology back then? Also, interesting to see the prevalence of mustard in German food. Did not realise it was that popular.
@@cooking-the-world erm...no, I mean like someone must have thought it up at some point in time. Like, take the ground meat , spice it, and stuff it into a piece of intestine. I had no idea that it is a traditional recipe. I thought this was developed post industrial revolution because it's .... like, very efficient ..sorta like engineering if you know what I mean...take the cuts and scraps and what have you..chop it up and put it all in a tube ,and now you have a sort of packaged meat...so, I thought this was a natural outcome of the meat packing industry. But, now, I know better.😄 #PS The roast didn't turn out too well. I think I used too much beer. I am no cook TBH... it's this pandemic that's making me try out new things. Tomorrow, I'm making myself subs... I'm pretty good that making sandwiches. ##PPS.. sorry, didn't mean to ramble on. You guys take care.
My wife and I (both live in New Jersey...sorry) spent 2 weeks touring through parts of Germany in May-June 2019. ALL of the food we had was EXCELLENT, especially the bratwurst in Nurnberg. Loved all the different places we visited. So very impressed with your country and it's people. Would love to visit again someday.
I am glad that you enjoyed your time in Germany so much. I am keeping m fingers crossed so the Corona time is over and we will be able to travel to the places we would like to visit.
Well come to Wisconsin, there are more brat types here than you can imagine. Not long ago most people outside of Wisconsin didn't know what a brat was. The football tailgate party's made them popular. Or come to central Wisconsin where Stone Ridge makes ALL different kinds of Brats and Hamburgers.
Oh my, you are making me SO hungry! Tubed meats! The varieties and possibilities are endless. Traditional and regional sausages have been “voted on” over the decades and the centuries, but new makers are also creating interesting delights. I’m not in Germany or Italy, but luckily in the Milwaukee area. I’ve got to get out to the market! Mmmmmm!
Brats: a pretty important subject to me since when I was born my father wasn't in the hospital. He thought he had more time so he was buying bratwurst and playing golf 40 miles away. Did I forgive him? Have you tasted brats? Of course!
great video, how do they make the sausage to stay straight?I have done various, bratwurst, weisswurst, etc. but they always get curved but the ones i see everywhere they are straight...
Gruß gott plz explain and where one can buy the best n authentic sausage. Which one is good?? From metzgerai or aldi lidl? Where can I get the quality sausages. Danke schön.
I guess that depends where you live.As I mentioned in a video I like buying fresh corse Bartwurst in a butcher shop:) or any shop for that matter. Hope that helps;)
1. I live in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin (USA) area. 2. My grandmother, who came from Germany, was born in 1880. 3. That is how I was taught to cook brats. 4. I like dusseldorf mustard. 5. I like Usinger's brats. The quality is wonderful. Give it a try.@@cooking-the-world
I was in the Army in early 90's in Baumholder and in that region maybe due to large amount of American's serving there most places broke bratwurst into 2 types. Wiesswurst and rotewurst. First I guess was similar to Frankfurt style (pork & veal)and 2nd was more like a smoked ham type sausage. I had brats in Mannheim and Frankfurt also and the white brats seemed vey similar. I think I had more coarse ground ones in Bavaria. P.S. most American bratwursts tend to be coarse ground, more spiced, and 100% pork, and generally setup for outdoor grilling. Also Brats are most predominant in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, and Illinois. I am from Michigan and a lot of your commenters are from Wisconsin by the looks of it. If you are in America never get a "stadium style" brat as it is basically a hot dog.
i grew up in the pfaltz region but now live in southern NJ and my favorite brat was the rotewurst for sure! Not many people know about it and cool to hear it mentioned.
As I am living in Berlin region, I want to tell you, that a real Currywurst includes some curry within the Wurst, too. ... The curry doesn´t come with the sauce, only ... But, I know it´s done like this in most other regions.
BTW ... my favourite variety is the Thüringer ... Even thou, we have to say that this contains a variety of different sausages, cause IT`S NOT A BRAND ... it´s only like the local receipe in the region of Thuringia
@@cooking-the-world It´s a common believe, that Herta Heuwer was first one to prepare currywurst ... de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herta_Heuwer --- thay say, that she invented it in September 1949
@@aepfelchenapfelbaum9536 Oh I know that. But as far as I remember she wasn't a Sausage Maker, she just invented the sauce. Sorry, I wasn't very specific;) I meant when did you start adding curry powder to the Bratwurst in Berlin and if you knew who started it? If you don't know it is ok :)
Because I have both smoked my own, but can purchase them from my butcher in Crivitz Wisconsin (Pelkins). They are rich, moist, and delicious. We are all very proud of our Wisconsin brats! I also make my own bratwurst. It took ten years to get the receipt correct. I have been told the are very good. I will give away one ingredient the rest goes to my son's.., nutmeg.
@@cooking-the-world 😁 LOL. It's always been a bone of contention hasn't it Marta. I actually remember it in both places as my dad was posted to Berlin from Hamburg. My mum hated it because it wasn't Deutsch. She liked curry though. :)
