Something I am trying to stop doing is defending my pursuit of an MSW. So many people have negative perceptions of Social Work or MSW degrees. People often assume I will be a SW with CPS and make $20k/year and be miserable, etc. I usually have to explain the different jobs and types of SW and how diverse the degree is. Thank you for putting this awesome info out there on your channel!

Getting your LCSW can be really difficult, depending on which state you live in. Also, in order to be able to have a private practice, you really need to get on insurance panels so that you can accept insurance and that, is exceptionally hard. Then after all that work, you're insulted to receive the average amount of reimbursement that social workers make from insurance. Most people who seek therapy, don't really want to pay 125.00/ hour for therapy, out of pocket.
@MindyourSociety
@MindyourSociety 3 года назад
I understand it’s a challenge, but worthwhile pursuits often are. People are still doing it successfully every day. I’m in many social work groups and know hundreds of people who have successfully gotten their LCSW and went into private practice, doing well for themselves.

Another great video! I’ve been doing preliminary research before I graduate on Indeed for corporate social responsibility like jobs. I’m not seeing many results produce. Is there a season (e.g. spring to summer) where job turnover / openings is most high? I’m not sure if I’m searching the wrong key words and/or looking in the wrong places. My program does not place emphasis on job searching until the last semester so I’m navigating this on my own. Lastly, can you make a video on landing a Corp. social responsibility job as an entry level? Many positions want 5 years experience minimum. Thanks 💕
@MindyourSociety
@MindyourSociety 3 года назад
Hello Loretta, it does depend on your location, but there isn't really one hiring season. Try keywords such as "program consultant" "Community engagement manager" "corporate volunteer engagement" or "community program manager" "philanthropy"...And start taking notes of titles that you find when you research, because all of these jobs may not be called "corporate social responsibility manager". Companies can get pretty creative with titles, which makes it a little difficult to find these roles.

What’s the difference between Medical&Psychiatric Social Work and Clinical Social Work? It would be of great help, thanks! :)
@rosavwright
@rosavwright 2 года назад
A medical social worker is usually someone that works in the medical field or hospital field in some way. However, clinical social work usually refers to some sort of direct service work or therapeutic work in any area, leading up to an independent license. A clinical social worker does not have to work in a medical setting
@Lizziesouth
@Lizziesouth 2 года назад
So, they all fall under the same qualification. The medical/clinical is based in the hospital whereas the Psychiatric is for Mental health. It doesn’t mean they have the same knowledge or roles that doctors or nurses do, but they step in supporting the wellbeing of those individuals. For instance, a Psychiatric Social worker could help organise housing for an individual suffering from mental illness after they leave a psychiatric hospital. They could also arrange for support workers or care/support workers that could help them live more independently. In some cases like the UK 🇬🇧, Social workers do assessments to determine whether an individual has mental capacity or not (which means an assessment that determines whether an individual is suffering from a mental illness that requires intervention and support). Having said that, anyone with a Social work degree can decide to do whatever they want in Social work, and they can change if they want to as well. It’s all the same area of work. It just depends on what area in Social work you’re interested in and decide to work in.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what I want to do, but I love the corporate social work or policy analyst route ideas. My question is, would I have to start out micro/mezzo to ultimately get to the macro level? I know social work is for me but the idea of case management drives me away completely. Is there anything I could be doing as an undergrad to get my foot in the door of macro work? Pretty much all my courses are generalist and micro focused.

Hi Elmas. Social Work is not a useless degree. You gain so much knowledge and insight about human behavior and their relationship with society and culture that is easily adaptable in multiple areas. You also develop skills that can help you solve your own problems, your family's problems, or other people's problems. I think people get stuck on the idea of a child welfare worker who is working crazy hours and dealing with so many different cases while getting paid a terrible wage. However, its important for people to know they don't have to stay stagnant in the same position for the rest of their career. They just need to stay long enough to develop the skills they need to move on to something better. Finish your degree. Also talk with your adviser/professors to learn about career possibilities. Finally, if possible, dont fall too deeply into debt to get your degree. Do what you have to do to finish but, if you can, avoid debt. Good luck.

Besides informational interviews and watching RU-vid videos how do I decide on my niche? I graduated with my BSW in May. I just started working with children with Autism and I like it so far though it is challenging. I can’t decide between hospital social work and school social work. :/

Corporate social work? I fear were I ever to take a job like that that it would likely kill me, either spiritually or physically. Corporations are considered under the law as "persons" if you can believe it and are in the main run by people who prize psychopathy. Their prime motive is profit; how in the heck is that compatible with social workers who work for social justice, human rights and equity? I do not think they are at all compatible, in fact they are antithetical to one another and I would seriously question any social worker who claims such a position is compatible with core social work values.

Does one need anything specific (other than bsw/msw) to become a school social worker? I mean like, any form of educational certifications, etc?

You need to have had a semester long internship in the school system. Depending on your state, you might also be required to have school social work certification.

this is very insightful, I am at a crossroads on choosing a masters in Nursing, Occupational psychology and Social work in the UK but plan to relocate to the USA, I have heard that social workers are poorly paid in the US, can someone advise please, I already have an MBA and looking for one of the shortage occupations to enable me to relocate to a better system from Africa. Kindly advice. Appreciate it.
