Yacht Rock sensations Pablo Cruise had 5 major hits back in the day including two that went to the top 6 …
today’s song Whatcha Gonna Do from 1977 and Love Will Find A Way from 1978. Then they had a #13 hit in 1981 with Cool Love and then the hits stopped and the band seemed to disappear…Two things brought about their resurrection into pop culture. .. When the term Yacht Rock was invented they blew up again, as one of the foremost purveyors of the genre. Then in 2008 one of the world’s favorite comedic actors Will Ferrell wore their shirt in his movie Stepbrothers and put them back in our collective conscience. Up next the two principals from the band Cory Lerios and David Jenkins tell us the story of their biggest hit and their rise to the top of the AM radio dial in the 70s on professor of rock..

#1970s #rock #vinylstory
Hey music junkies Professor of Rock always her to celebrate the greatest artists and greatest songs of all time If you are about music, you’ll want to subscribe to this channel so you don’t miss an episode. Also if you’d be so kind as to support us on Patreon, it helps us get more interviews.. Today We’re going back to a feature we’ve been missing for a while. You may recall…. It’s Yacht Rock Smoothies-the story behind the smoothest songs in the harbor with exclusive commentary by the band. The genre was made up 30 years after the music peaked on the charts by JD Ryznar, Hunter D. Star And Lane Farnhan with a Channel 101 series of 12 episodes that parodied the smooth soft rock of the late 70s and early 80s from Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald to Steely Dan and Hall and Oates. It’s actually one of my favorite RU-vid series of all time.. I’ll link to it below. The definition of Yacht Rock has gotten out of control. as Sirus XM sometimes plays songs and artists that are not even close to the genre. just because they were on the radio at the same time. What started out as a joke has become a world wide phenomenon. The inventors of the genre even have a scale that tells you if a song is Yacht or Nyacht I’ll link to all of this below.
Well bottom line is that the band Pablo Cruise is definitely Yacht Rock and their smash 1978 hit Love Will Find A Way is the subject of today’s episode of Yacht Rock smoothies including an exclusive interview with the founding principle members. So before we get into the interview let me give you a quick history of the band.. Pablo Cruise was formed in San Francisco, in 1973, with former members of the band Stoneground… It was David Jenkings on vocals and guitar, Cory Lerios on Keys and vocals, Bud Cockrell on bass and vocals and Steve Price on drums.. A lot of people me included thought that the band was named after one of the band members. I always thought that it was the name of the main singer until my dad told me different.
The band would end up explaining more than once that "Pablo represents an honest, real, down- to-earth individual; and Cruise depicts his fun-loving and easygoing attitude towards life.”

Thank you Professor of Rock for reintroducing me to bands that I haven’t followed in a long while. Saw this video when it first came out about a year ago which immediately got me listening to them again. Fast forward to April 20, 2024… I saw Pablo Cruise in concert in Fort Lauderdale. Excellent show!!! Bonus of the evening was that some of the band members were staying at the same hotel my husband and I were at. I met David Jenkins out in the front of the hotel while I was walking my dog after the show. Got a quick chance to let him know in person how much we enjoyed the show. Super nice guy!! I ❤ Pablo Cruise!! 😊

When I was a Marine stationed in Japan, Dave came through with the Steve Morse era Kansas, Tom Johnson from The Doobies, and a couple of other bands on a USO tour called the 1st Airborn Rock and Roll Division. I was backstage as part of the crew and got to meet them all. Dave was as smooth as his tunes. Even though I was nothing to him except the sound guy's lackey, he treated me with respect and never acted like I had no business talking to him. He is truly good people.

Here's one for you, Professor. These guys were the opening act for the 1st Rock and Roll Airborne Division, a USO Tour which I saw at a venue nobody else could get a ticket for because it was on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean on a base called Diego Garcia. It was 1984. What the band may not even remember that I will never forget is that the other acts included Kansas but the Kansas bass player fell ill in Guam and could not continue the tour, so the bass player from the band Louisiana's LeRoux, Leon Medica, became part of the Kansas act, and the lead singer of Pablo Cruise led a conglomeration of them, Kansas, and Patrick Simmons of the Doobie Brothers on the LeRoux smash New Orleans Ladies. I own every Louisiana's LeRoux album made and was blown away by the craftsmanship and tribute to Leon for his dedication to our troops. By the way, the other band that finished that afternoon was none other than Cheap Trick. You have blown me away with inside information for so many years and I just get this one chance to lift your lid, doing it because you're so good at what you do. I am broadcasting in the Olympic Peninsula in Washington on public radio now, and I just ordered a shed to build a studio in so I'm not going to let the music die.

I had sort of forgotten Pablo Cruise. I remembered there was an album with a jungle cover that I had listened to all the time, and the band had a Hispanic name. Somehow I became sure it was Santana, and wondered why I could never find a Santana album with a jungle cover. Then the other day someone mentiond Pablo Cruise and everything clicked into place. I listened to "Ocean Breeze" (Pable Cruise album with jungle cover) all the time when I was studying.

I've always loved Pablo Cruise! I'm 70 now, and so out of the vernacular language that I didn't know what yacht rock was. I've heard of yacht girls because of RU-vid showing Meghan Markle as such. I had A Place in the Sun on cassette and I wore that tape out, replaced it with a CD. I still play it. I still play Toto, Boston, Fleetwood Mac. Don't forget about The Little River Band. And yes, It's All Right!

Oh my gosh, I love Pablo Cruise!! As a matter of fact, I watch another RU-vidr, Jamel Jamel and he does reactions to songs he hasn’t heard before. He did a series 70’s Throwback. Some sixties too. I like it so much bc that’s what influenced my music taste, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s music. (I was born in ‘63) So, I have three sons, 25,23 and 22. I send them songs all the time that I listened to growing up and a teenager and young adult. I just sent Pablo Cruise two weeks ago!! It’s a great way to relate to my kids and keep all those great songs alive. Plus its interesting seeing which ones they like best and so forth. I remember riding around with my cousin listening to Pablo as we were going to a place called Star Castle to go dance!! Good times. Enjoyed this one Professor! ❤️💜💚

My Pablo Cruise moment...I was a 14 year old in 81 and went with my friends to Marriott's Great America, eventually 6 Flags....and these guys and Steele Breeze were playing if we payed a little more. Pablo was my go to band! I got the guy at my record store to order me a Pablo Cruise t-shirt and I was like the only kid in my neighborhood to like them and have all their albums. Then they came and did a show in a club near me and I was too young to get in. I was livid. All my friends were picking on me saying what kind of Pablo fan am I if I missed their concert. Then they fell off the Earth on me. Years later in college I getting drunk with some randos and some kid put on World's Away and played "I Go To Rio" and I did the screwy intro. Well that was it ..I was a hit! Good memories of that really wonderful band that was a big part of my life for probably 6 or 7 years.

Pablo Cruise is one of those bands who sound even better in person. Nothing wrong with Yacht Rock, I enjoy it...but I'm not sure Pablo even qualifies as Yacht Rock. They have their own unique brand, and I promise you, there is no other group like Pablo Cruise! In the best way. I had the good fortune to meet Dave, Cory and new-ish singer to the group, Robbie Wyckoff over the years. Looking forward to seeing them at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall in a few weeks!

So, I made a run to Tucson a little while back, and did a bit of channel scanning as Phoenix AM faded to static. When the radio hit 830, I had a great older song to listen to. It turned out that the station is in Oro Valley, north of Tucson. I returned to Phoenix and the station was still making contact with my radio. Even though it shuts down after dark, it's great to hear during my daytime work, covering most of the Valley. The reason I'm telling this is because they play the songs that we don't get to hear from the other "oldies" channels here. I recently heard a "familiar" song and had to get about halfway through it before it finally sparked the memory fire. PABLO CRUISE! They performed in Celebrity Theater with Manfred Mann's Earth Band. I didn't go to a lot of concerts in the day, but they made me mighty glad I went to that one. Either band could have been the headliner, they were all so great. The friend who helped form my taste in music was a big MMEB fan, and it was his insistence that got us to go to the show. I have to say that it must have been right around '80, due to another friend in attendance. I met her in '78, so it had to be shortly after that. Until this video, I have been wholly unaware of Yacht Rock. Of course I've heard plenty of soft rock, some of which I really like. I never thought of Pablo Cruise as soft rock. In fact, I never thought of them as part of a genre. So many songs are recognized by title alone and the artists are forgotten. PC sounds like PC. They've never needed more cowbell.

Cool interview …. I am amazed by a lot of musicians in their transformation from band to band …. I am a huge fan of Stoneground music as I enjoy the folksy “ hippie” music from the late sixties early seventies…I encourage those that enjoy Pablo Cruise music to listen to some Stoneground and see the difference in their sound …songs like Passion Flower and Brand New Start …Added Attraction ….just cool music !

Pablo Cruise fills a blank space for me, I didn't know they came and went and came back. Wow, this was very refreshing for my ears this morning. I woke up in an icky mood but not anymore. Three chords and the truth will put a smile on your face!

“Where do you get all this stuff? What do you do all day?” Love it. Those are the kinds of questions I get about my own chosen field of study-for-pleasure. It’s not a hardship to learn and catalog the history of what we love, is it? I’ve actually used some of your uploads to fill in a few pop culture gaps in my son’s homeschool history curriculum, Professor. ❤️ And speaking of doing what you love and loving what you do, I’m often struck by how very vibrant are the folks you interview, regardless of age. Human beings really do need that fire of passion to keep us going strong.

Thanks for doing this one, Professor. I remember Pablo Cruise from back in the day, listening to them on the radio to and from the private school which I hated. I always thought the group was Pablo and his band. Now we know the truth! 😆 Both of their hits were & still are positive, upbeat pieces that got me to sing along. If I had a yacht rock channel in my car I would jam it all the time.

I always loved how, if you asked the band "which one of you is Pablo Cruise", they'd answer "the one in the middle" (hint: there was only 4 of them). Just a smooth, unappreciated band... but so was Toto at the time.

I can’t tell you how much I hate the term Yacht Rock. I guess the alternative is easy listening though. I can’t for the life of me see how Steely Dan is considered Yacht Rock. Christopher Cross, eh maybe. Pablo Cruise, ok Little River Band, eh ok. Not the Dan though.
@gravityissues5210
@gravityissues5210 Год назад
@@danafortier4085If you consider it a pejorative. But if you look at Rizner's definition, which is rather precise, it has to do with a particular sound, based around LA and its elite studio musicians, or those who sound just like that. Which, is pure Steely Dan.

I love how you dig into these old songs and records. Getting the backstory. I used to watch the "Behind the music" show, and I was fascinated by how groups or songs evolved. Even groups I couldn't stand. I used to be in the broadcast industry, and I never knew most of these stories, only some. Well you're doing the same thing as that show used to, and I'm enjoying it immensely. When I hear a Pablo Cruise song, it takes me right back to the 70's when I was 18. Takes you back to a time when you were king of the world, and you knew everything.

My friends and I spent our summers playing wiffle ball in each other’s back yards and these songs bring me right back to those great summers. I, like you Prof, constantly talk to my kids about the talent the bands had prior to all the assistance computers have given to performers today, these guys played their instruments, sang their songs, no auto tune. I plan on listening to both albums this weekend! Thank you PoR for this interview PS I had a Pablo Cruise shirt in 7th grade!

The summer that Star Wars came out, I was ten, and Pablo Cruise was all over the radio with 'Whatcha Gonna Do', as well as Heart with 'Barracuda'. I still think of Star Wars when I hear them both. I remember my 17 year old brother driving us to see it at North Park Mall in Dallas in the white Impala he had gotten as his first car (it had been our grandfather's car for ages), and hearing that music on the radio. The hot wind blasting into the little triangular side windows, the musty, stale smell of the 1960's upholstery, the chrome pushbuttons on the old radio, and the mere two-lane width of Central Expressway headed south to the mall. Star Wars of course blew my little mind, and that summer was cemented in my memory forever, because a year later, my brother was killed in a car accident, at the age of 18, overseas where we lived in Taiwan. Pablo Cruise and Heart and Star Wars and that white '64 impala in the summer of 1977. I got that same car when I started driving, too.

Great job, Pablo Cruise are fantastic. I'd love to hear you talk about "Make A Little Magic" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It is a yacht rock classic and helped the band survive when their "alternative" country music wasn't popular on the country charts. Mr. Bojangles was really the only hit. They've got a long and interesting history as a classic American band. Thanks for your show, it's great!

Pablo Cruise was another one of those bands that were in my parents 8 track collection. I never had many of my own records until my teens so those 8 tracks are what I listened to until 78-79 and I started getting more into rock. Then "yacht rock" was left for the memories and I started to dive deeper and heavier. Afternoon Delight is the song I hear echoing in my memories the most when I remember that old 8 track player.
