Coming up.. an interview with Yacht Rocker Robbie Dupree what wrote one of the all time 80s classics… Steal Away is as popular today as it was when it peaked near the top of the charts in 1980 and amazingly it almost didn’t get recorded. Robbie moved out to LA and paid his dues for years but nothing came of it. He submitted demos including "Steal Away" to every label he could and they rejected him outright. So he moved back and took a job loading carpet into trucks to make ends meet figuring it was over. Then the craziest thing happened… Find out from Robbie and how the song has had a major resurgence from Jimmy Fallon to Better Call Saul.
In short: This video is the story of the 80s classic hit Steal Away in an exclusive interview with Yacht Rock artist Robbie Dupree. In the professor of rock 80s video series.

The great thing about these interviews, Adam, is how they can sometimes give us a new appreciation for a song that we might not have paid much attention to when it was originally released. Although I remember hearing this particular song, I never gave it much thought. I probably dismissed it at the time, but because of this interview, I'm enjoying it in a way that I never have. Thanks!

Not sure when the Soft Rock of the late ‘70s/early ‘80s became “Yacht Rock”, as Robbie said, but it was all Easy Listening (or Living). These were some of the songs of my childhood, always playing in the background. They were part of the romance of LA to me then as I imagined it, partly what drew me to live there. (Let’s hear it for WeHo!) The way you speak about your father, I never would’ve guessed that yours was a challenging relationship, but that’s true for many of us. Yet your connection lives on through the appreciation for music he shared w/you. So sweet that your own son sings and loves it, too, Prof.☮️

Also his other hit from that period Hot Rod Hearts was memorable, if not so impactful. First learned of that on the K-Tel album Soundwaves which incuded Steal Away and an photo of Dupree on the back cover mentioning the album and the second track.

For decades I would have put money on this being a Loggins/McDonald penned joint. It had "What a Fool Believes" DNA all over it, and the vocal harmonies were extremely evocative of the Michael/Kenny vibe. One Wikipedia search disabused me of that notion.

I actually believed that was Michael McDonald doing the backups there, he was known for that kinda of part (like in Ride Like the Wind). I only found out over the last few years that it wasn't him. I heard there was a lawsuit over the fact that it sounded so much like him and a part he would do. I don't know how thru that is, though.

One of the most humble interviews I've seen on this channel. I almost get the impression that Robbie Dupree is still a bit in shock of it all. Professor, I’ve since retired from DJing on a regular basis long ago but have stayed busy announcing high school baseball games. I add my DJ flair by playing sound bites at the appropriate time. One of those is when a player steals a base, and I immediately play the sound bite, “Why don’t we steal away”. It never fails to bring smiles. My next game is tomorrow and I hope to play it a couple times. Thank you again for another great interview.

I remember reading an assignment my son was given in his early high school years. It was something about how your parents impacted your life. I remember reading that he wrote that his love of music came from me. That was a huge fist pumping moment for me.

Oh Adam! To this day, I remember driving while my 3&4 year old sons were in the backseat. My oldest, when he’d hear the first few notes of “We Built This City” would ask me to turn it up - “Mama! That’s MY song!.” My youngest, when he’d hear the very beginning of Jane Weidlan’s (sp?) “Blue Kiss” would do the same - “MY SONG”! Precious memories, for sure. Thank you!

*SOME SONGS (like **_THIS_** one) are written with MORE THAN A **_LITTLE_** TOUCH OF MAGIC in them!* I was never much of a "rock _afficianada,"_ but *_THIS SONG_* really grabbed me as a young (at least: much younger!) woman. *ONE OF THE **_VERY BEST SONGS_** FROM THE LAST HALF of the 20TH CENTURY!* Also, so _VERY, VERY_ GLAD, Adam, that your dearly beloved son heard that Magic - and positively responded to it. Your story gave me warm chills up my spine! *HAPPY, HAPPY, JOY, JOY!*

Steal Away is one of my favorite songs to sing along to-- has been for some years. Liked it immediately when it came out. Yes, it was "soft rock" at the time, but I didn't mind that, never really did. It just flows so effortlessly along... like a lazy winding river... gets wherever "there" is eventually with no fanfare nor fuss along the way. It IS smooth! It actually DEFINES "smooth". Just sweet and sensual, moving in it's own way.

I totally love this tune! This one is just as about infectious as "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes!

I’m tickled pink at the fact that your son is connected with music, basically repeating the lyrics as a way of learning to speak. I have an autistic fraternal twin sister, and she used to randomly repeat phrases from Disney movies or pop songs as a way of speaking. I have Asperger’s, so music has been my main interest. She and I are both connected to music like many other kids and adults alike.

I was born in 75 and while I loved a ton of 50s, 60s and 80s songs, I almost hated the 70s music sound for some reason. In my late 30s I started realizing I no longer disliked the sound and then actually started loving them. I now listen to and love songs from the 50's through today. What a cool guy.
