In this video, I show y'all how I check out the new USED block that I got FROM ONE OF YOU!! It is super rusty, and will take a lot of work to clean, so I start by checking to make sure the caps are all correct for the block, the bore is standard, and there is no abnormal wear in the main cap bores; basically I want to make sure it's worth my time to put effort into it! Hopefully this helps anyone else out there who has a potentially good block as well!

Note: Electrolytic cleaning is mostly line of sight from the block to the anode, parts of the block that do not have a clear view of the anode will not get cleaned as much. You'll need to move the anode around, maybe even get a rod anode and put it in the crank bore to clean the inside surfaces. Put a rod in each cylinder to clean them. And as also noted, a 'dumb' charger will keep the current flowing and not shut down with 'bad bat'.
@chrishouse5753
@chrishouse5753 2 года назад
Ditto - to increase the capabilities of the anode keep that cable out of the solution as well and use a conductive connection to the block (I've used a bolt and piece of chain around a large piece so maybe the same idea in the many holes on the block).
@mds6387

Some people will coil an anode in a plastic 55gal barrel to surround the entire block.

It's the same thing with electroplating, right? If you've got a surface that is hidden from the anode by another surface of the part it'll end up with either no plating or a very very thin layer of plating compared to the surfaces that aren't "hidden" from the anode.

That was so much fun! For sending rust away, I recommend the YT video by Ken Sweden entitled "True rust removal by a chemist" which corrects a number of misconceptions about electrolysis that have become accepted wisdom through one hobbyist repeating the errors of the others until there is the appearance of unanimity with no professionals ever having entered the fray, so to speak. My "go-to" for rust removal is Evapo-Rust. I really like it since it has an indefinite shelf-life (depending on how much it's used of course), benign, non-toxic qualities, and because it's a chelator, does not affect the base metal in any way.

Faye, to make sure the tub doesn't burst when filled you can take the lid and just cut it, leaving a 1" lip all around and then put it on. It will hold in the sides and make sure it keeps its shape. And use a stabilized power supply instead of a battery charger, it's more consistent.

@@FayeHadley You just need to use something other than a battery charger that puts out around 12-15v. Things like old power bricks from laptop computers work. Also, increasing the anode surface area will speed up the process, but you'll need to run rods down the centre of the cylinders and connect them all together... electrolysis is dependent on current density so the closer to the anode, the faster they will etch while the far corner where you've connected the negative will not clean up at all because the cast iron is WAY less resistance than the electrolyte. Hope some of that helps. Good luck! Be interesting to see what results you get.

@machinist5828
@machinist5828 2 года назад
I was scanning the replies to see if anyone else brought this up. Regular old rebar seems to work the best as an anode. And yes washing soda. I scoured the swap meets and junk stores for old battery chargers to use. I have several that won't shut off. Wall warts and power supplies for electronics work well too. The brown water is biodegradable and can be used on your rose bushes. Be safe out there and use plenty of ventilation just in case. You are so right about line boring and line honing. If you have an out of spec block All is not lost. When you align bore you remove material from the cap only. First you use a mill or surface grinder to remove material from the cap on the flats. Once you do that the caps can be reinstalled and torqued to spec. The block is indicated so that the bottom of the bore the solid part not the cap is zero. You want to remove all the material from the cap. If you just bored through it your timing gears will be tight or chain loose. You bore to within .002" and hone to finish size. Years ago there was a company that made bearing shells that were oversize. It might have been Hastings but I just don't remember. We used them on Detroit Diesel blocks mostly I think. Don't quote me as I was the rookie greenhorn in the shop that started out sweeping and tending the hot tank. I learned and could do everything in that shop, slowly. I had to do stuff step by step and the old hands were a lot faster. By the time I left they had bought a brand new crankshaft grinder for me to run. But alas my dad got cancer and I had to move back home. That was 1979 so my memory is a bit fuzzy. Blocks can be saved, just keep a nice cash reserve because it ain't gonna be cheap. Be safe out there Cheers Terry

For cast blocks a nice clean can be achieved by soaking total submerged in 7% vinegar. After 2-3 days the vinegar will be almost black and the cast will be rust free. Wash with water and coat with any kind of oil product. Cheap, totally safe to use and dispose of. I wasn’t convinced until I tried it, it works especially good on cast.

You would be surprised what damage in a block can be repaired, but as you found out, its not always cost effective. The worst damage I see on that block is the main bearing bores. I check them by scraping with a small piece if square tool steel, which will take off any raised rust and really brings up the machining marks. Then, like Danny said, you can match up the machining marks. I just did this with a rare 327 block that came with several sets of caps sitting in a bucket. It took a few hours to find the right one's but we were able to do it. There is some rust pitting, but after scraping, there is no raised rust to close up the bearing bore, it actually measured up fine and will run fine with the pitting as its not bad. It will slightly lower the heat transfer from the bearing, but for this engine, it won't affect anything. That block is not very rusty. I regularly work with stuff 10x worse.
@spagsketti
@spagsketti 2 года назад
I agree with Tom Davidson all that rust will come off with Electrolysis just hang the block in a tank of water and Arm and hammer super soda solution. (sodium carbonate) 1 cup per 5 gallons of water line a plastic tank with iron plates. put the positive charge on them and negative on the part. I use a old computer power supply I just jump the correct pins in the main plug (just google image PSU jumper and around 50,000 pics will show up) I have done some rare 100 year old cast iron pans to perfection. It would take around 2 days in the tank to remove 99% of that rust. No scrubbing involved. Um so I just saw your tank build put more metal on the walls. Plus baking soda is not as efficient and you can use too much baking soda will cause slower rust removal. Arm and hammer super soda (sodium carbonate) Do not use salt (it will work) it turns out chlorine gas where this sodium carbonate puts out hydrogen gas. Thats the bubbles. So you need an unregulated power supply.

I’m no chemist….. but your anode and cathode should be of like materials. You want like atoms replacing what rust is bubbling off. Also, baking soda CAN be used but you have to heat it above 50C before mixing into the bath. You really want the Washing Soda, instead. It makes for flawless electrolytic. The Baking Soda has to decompose before becoming truly an electrolyte. Anodes encircling your tank will help ALOT….. like others have mentioned, even centering a rod in each of the bores would be beneficial. (Keep your Neg cable out of the bath, too. Use a bolt sticking up above the surface) STIR YOUR BRINE OFTEN, or use a fish/pond pump to keep fluid moving. (If you can manage to heat the water, that seems to help, too) I have a 53yr old Chevy that every cast iron part went through this same process….. Best of luck, Faye…. Looks like a keeper to me, tho

Smart chargers can give you fits. I've had to used a good battery jumper to the low battery with the smart charger attached to it. This fools the smart charger to stay on. O ce the low battery has built up to the minimum setting programed in the smart charge you can take the good battery out and continue with normal charging of the low battery. Every smart charger is different so it may take several attempts before you find that minimum charge.

Thanks for taking that 7M and rear end off my hands. That’s not from washing the block. That’s from New England air living on the south coast. That engine sat for a decade. Edit: Actually, I did run it through the parts washer when I was at New England Institute of Technology. We were going to use the turbo block and some aftermarket pistons and rods from an na-t build. We forgot to measure the bore on the na-t engine. We assumed it was the same size. 🤦🏻‍♂️ So the turbo block got set aside and sat for a decade.

My cousin in law actually painted both the turbo block and n/a block Ford blue. Wanted it to be easier to detect if there were any leaks.

One thing about electrolysis, the bubbles coming off the block are bubbles of hydrogen........ so well ventilated area is really, really recommended. I'm glad you ended up with a useable block tho..

Walnut shell media blasting is a good alternative for removing surface rust without removing the base material.

I did this same process years ago on an exhaust manifold for my 54’ chevy 235. I used several pieces of metal flat bar wired together around the tub so it would have more “line of sight” around the manifold and it came out amazing!!

Pro Tip: washing soda (sodium carbonate) works much better that baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Also available in pool supplies as pH booster.

I ran a chemical junket tank at caterpillar that was to remove rust. The chemical was called Kelay.it would dissolve the rust and then a second dunk in a rust preventive .

I’ve heard good things about Gibbs brand penetrating oil that may help you with converting the rust on a block like that. I’ve never tried it myself but it could be an interesting experiment

Main caps you can tell when put them on usally both edges won't lineup when there wrong or catches with finger nail when torqued. But alot of trial and error on finding the right one

I would put it in a big tub and fill it with Evaporust. Might be a little spendy but it will be clean clean in about 24 hours. You might also want to check into Hydrogen Embrittlement, a side effect of electrolysis.
