For me, Bic Camera, Yodobashi Camera, and Don Quijote are a must. Speaking of Don Quijote, you should check out the Shupatto bags, as they're extremely compact and convenient for shopping.

For Headphones and In-Ear Monitors/Earbuds, look for E-Earphone over in Akihabara. One of the best stores on the planet for specifically those products. They have them all out on the floor so you can test them out yourself. And they have some extremely high end stuff you can test out too. Basically the entire gamut.

I loved Uniqlo, just discovered there are some shops in my province in Canada, but the prices are much, much higher than in Japan... Almost twice the price for the products I purchased...

I lived in Tokyo for 15 years, my second home , then I moved back to Scotland. The buses are late, trains are late, interviews are late, cant get a taxi and now I am on happy pills from the doctor. Word of advice don't leave Japan as you get used to the convenience and efficiency and nothing compares. Plus people are polite, not pessimistic and downtrodden.

Australian. If you have ADHD Japan is a hard sell - no stimulants (i.e. ADHD med's) allowed. I'm also on medical cannabis for pain and that's not an option. To Japan's favour rent/property/food/shopping/booze (certain types excluded) is much cheaper. I live in Sydney, which I love, but it feels like what Tokyo endured during the crazy late 80's - people are being forced to move far away because property requires so much of your income.

Haggling in electronics shops is a lost art. Back in the days (like 80s and 90s), you can pretty much go to any shop in Akihabara, a big retailer or small mom and pop shop and haggle haggle haggle. They would all whip out a calculator on the spot and run the numbers. And you could really get great deals. Those days are long gone unfortunately.

I had the complete opposite experience and found electronics to be way cheaper in Japan than in the US, especially camera gear (makes sense since most camera gear is made in Japan). Of course, helped that Yodobashi and BIC have tax free sales for tourists, as well as additional coupons on their social media pages (usually on their FB page). I saved nearly $1,000 buying a new camera and lens kit in Tokyo than what it would have cost in the US (even from Amazon).

Yodobashi Camera was my favorit pick among these stores. While my interest in Japan might have shifted more towards the older parts and I might put Kyoto over Akihabara as far as places I want to visit now, but it was still all the geeky tech-stuff that originally got me interested in Japan and as such I would certainly have to visit at least one (and most likely multiple) stores like this if I ever go there 😀
@tykep1009
@tykep1009 2 месяца назад
Japanese electronics retail stores are not places to negotiate discounts. Most people on the sales floor are temporary employees hired by the manufacturer for promotion, not by stores, and have no discretion for discounts. Since the store's tenant and labor costs are included in the price, discounts based on the Amazon site are impossible. (Unless you are buying several costly items in a bundle.) People who want to buy at the lowest price usually buy online, and electronics retailers do not target such people.

Was in Tokyo last month. Super excited to visit all the brands I love like Nanamica in Daikanyama, N.hoolywood in Harajuku, etc, and the things they have there in Muji and Uniqlo are just so different and cheaper than other parts of the world (even before tax return). That said, I did find electronic stuff to be an exception. An apple m2 macbookair costs almost the same as in Australia if you take away the GST from both sides.

For headphones, you can go to Fujiavic in Akibahara. One small details that only audio enthusiasts know, JDM. JDM stands for Japan Domestic Market. Some headphones and earphones are marked Made in Japan, Not to be Sold Outside Japan. That means it was domestically made for Japan market only. The rest of the world gets Made in China. That includes big name brands. JDM products are usually higher in quality, design, raw materials and the sound it reproduces. They are certainly more expensive but you get what you paid for in quality.

We have one Muji in NYC and it's just okay. They have mostly stationary, kitchenware and some clothes. The food section is actually just 8 snacks they offer when you're in line for the cashier. I went to the Muji near Shibuya Square and they had 6 floors worth of stuff. The retort food section is probably the coolest area with like 20 different types of curry to choose from.

We have 8 Muji stores in NYC. Soho, Copper Square, Williamsburg, Hudson Yards, Chelsea, 59th Street, 5th Ave, and Times Square. 5th Ave is the flagship store with a little more than the others, but still nothing like Japan's stock.

also, the sony WH-1000XM line of headphones are dope. they're a little too expensive at retail but if you can get them on sale they're 100% worth it. 47,800 yen is a little step but anything around 40,000 is really good value
@alexschwalbach8229
@alexschwalbach8229 2 месяца назад
You probably decided on headphones by now since this seems recorded months ago, but the XM4's and 5's are both amazing. Really, the biggest difference is that the 5's don't fold in half like the 3's and 4's. I had the XM3's for 5 years, and they were still like new after using them almost every day. I upgraded to the 5's this holiday season when they were like half off for a day. I love them and still use my 3's as my "travel" pair as they fold up much smaller and I'm not concerned about them getting beat up as I've already gotten my money worth out of them.

If you go shopping in Japan, particularly in small stores, you find they welcome small change. So if you carry a containers of low value coins, tip it out on the tray and the assistant will happily count out the one-yen, five-yen and 10-yen coins. The background is that the consumption tax (which began at three- percent and is now 10-percent) means the final price becomes an awkward number which tends to soak up all their loose change. So some stores have rounded up, particularly so-called home-centres (DIY shops). Doing the obvious here in Japan can be the last thing tried. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit

I shopped at Bic Camera a lot while on holiday in Tokyo, and made use of their duty free pricing. Another highlight was the Masunaga 1905 shop in Aoyama, if you're on the lookout for handmade Japanese eyewear with some serious heritage (they also do duty free). Kama-Asa knife shop in Kappabashi is worth checking out for some high quality kitchen knives.

As an Australian living in the UK I was surprised at the cost of technology here in the UK. I thought Australia was expensive but my gosh! Honestly Australia is quite cheap for electronics now days. If you have any friends or family visiting you, I would ask them to buy in Australia (haggling with JB) and get the GST back at the airport. As a kickback offer to let them have like half the GST refund. I’ve done this multiple times now.

I still have a duvet from Muji. The duvet cover is a bit tattered. I checked online and am able to order a replacement in the U.S., so might consider doing that soonish. It's a Japan-specific size so I'm glad they have it available here. I still have some stationery and maybe some other knick-knacks from there, too. I'd say Muji is equivalent to a Japanese Ikea. I used them to furnish my apartment in Japan, much like you, Sarah. Hot tip for anyone living in Japan: I found that you can buy restaurant quality kitchenware from Japanese second-hand shops, called recycle shops locally. Fry pans, pots, knives and utensils and the like. That's what I did. I liked Uniqlo's style, I've sort of categorized it as a Japanese version of Gap in the U.S., but I found their socks made my feet sweaty. I guess check what material they're made from before you buy. I try to look for socks made from natural sources now, rather than synthetic (cotton, rayon, bamboo). I think there are physical Muji and Uniqlo stores in New York. Also a Kinokuniya! I bit of a hike from DC for me, though. There was a Beard Papa pastry shop in Georgetown, but it only lasted a couple years before closing at the beginning of the pandemic (-_-). My favorite things to do at the Yodobashi in Osaka was to try out the massage chairs and also get coffee and espresso samples in the home appliances department. I did those pretty much every time I went there. One thing I've noticed since returning to the U.S. is that even small electronic items, like off-brand USB hubs, cables, power strips, etc., were much better quality in Japan. I took them for granted while there but really appreciate the difference now. I've never been brave enough to haggle at a store like Yodobashi. Props to you, Sarah! I did manage to return something once. That is honestly probably harder to do than haggling in Japan. The other shops looked really nice! I hope I get a chance to check them out someday. Thanks for another great post, and for unlocking some more good memories!

Back in the day like 15 years ago , Global brands for electronics were much cheaper in Japan for things like Cameras and Head phones, but now When compared to Australia most electronics are much and camera gear is much cheaper in Australia even with the exchange rate.Also if your travelling overseas outside of Australia you can take advantage of TRS (Tourist Refund Scheme) even for Australian Citzens and that will save you a further 10%. great if you are loading up on big ticket items such as laptops or iphones (which hardly ever go on discount)

Uniqlo is the best. I wish the U.S. was as enthusiastic about creating delicious packet food as Japan. Alas…

I stocked up on Uniqlo Heat Tech clothing for my trip to Hokkaido last month, knowing that the temperature there goes below zero. As it turned out, Hokkaido actually wasn't that cold to the point where I just wore one Heat Tech shirt under a jacket.

I'm surprised you didn't need it in Hokkaido! I definitely got my use out of it in Akita on a recent trip and even just in Tokyo, cause I'm always so cold haha ☃️

@@seerasanThe Ultra Warm shirt made me sweat during the Snow Festival that I had to stop by the nearest Uniqlo to downgrade to an Extra Warm shirt. Also, a week later, Yokohama ended up being colder than Sapporo to the point where my hands started to freeze.

I was actually looking for a place to buy a suitcase in Tokyo! I'm travelling in autumn and only taking one suitcase with me, but was looking into coming back with an additional one for souvenirs and other stuff that I'd buy while over there. Do you get a suitcase commission from Muji, Sarah? ;)

Definitely get a muji one! I wish muji sponsored me, I’ve already convinced like 4 people to get one!!

is it weird to somewhat get homesick from Shinjuku area in general, im not the biggest fan of Yodobashi Camera, but i always walk passed them at one point or another when im in Tokyo (read Shinjuku) so in a sense i get somewhat homesick because i knew exactly where you were.
