Aussie/German living in Tokyo, working a full time job at a Japanese Company! I LOVE travelling & exploring Japan, so join me for my travel adventures!
at my last job the last 4 years i had to travel a lot (not as much as you tho!) and at first i thought thats so cool but after the first year i absolutely hated it. Mind you i have a wife and 2 dogs and not seeing them pissed me off. I had to quit after 4 years and now have a job where i earn much less but also dont have to travel anymore and i couldnt be more happier. People often romanticize traveling at work but it wears you down fast in my opinion.
I love that Loft store! I bought an awesome Japanese egg roll pan there. Also love Japanese stationary, pens, skincare, face masks, sunscreen and ceramics. Galbo sweets are a must too
Loft, Hands and even ordinary chemists are all great options for souvenir hunting. One exception to that in my opinion is Donki, as I believe they're really overrated as a store when the exploration fun factor is excluded. Like, their products tend to be of cheaper quality and aren't necessarily that cheap price wise. To top it all off their typical product design is mega garish in a bad way😢 I only shop in Donki when there's absolutely no other option like when I desperately need a spare charger or something in 1am. Even in that situation though convenience stores usually offer reasonably priced stuff and are much more straightforward to navigate.
I wanted that camera as well! I hope they told you that it’s not water resistant…. Love your videos! I’m going to be in Shinjuku in about a month and am really looking forward to roaming around a bit.
You became my new favourite youtuber, you have great energy and great content. I could seee the effort you have ade in to these videos. Can you make a video on how you are editing your videos too? I am planning to visit Japan (again) for my honey moon, any recommendations?! Such a romantic place to visit for relaxing environment?
i've been to loft twice but i did not know they had all that cool stuff. looks like a great place to buy gifts. also, i need to check out the shampoo/conditioner
I have brought loose tea and tea bags from Germany to Australia in the past. Always declared on the customs form, and had no problems. However, it was commercially packaged tea. I always keep any food products (biscuits, tea, chocolate, lollies etc.) in a separate bag, so that I can quickly pull them out, and on request show them to the customs officer.
Go to is the 1 kilo bags of green tea 😂 i used to get it at Tsukiji Market but those shops moved are closed, last time I was in Japan was in 2017, I went back in 2023 still found the green tea but it was Ueno. I picked up some hojicha and matcha also. Do you recommend any other places?
I guess I don't really know what homesickness is. I am an only child born in Los Angeles. I lived there at 11 years of age, then we moved to Hawai`i where my parents were born and raised. For them it was moving back. When I went to school, my father signed me up for Latin, but I said that I wanted to take Japanese, and all my relatives agreed with me that I should take Japanse, so my mother changed my foreign language to Japanese. I am an American male but I am getically Japanese as were all my producers were from Japan. I'm sure that you might have heard of places that non-Japanese allowed, but I have and I just walk in. I also there are many Japanese that think I'm Japanese. I moved to Tokyo when I was 25, when I moved there I was heavily assisted by rich Japanese families. I also have some relatives in Japan. I don't know how the got my phone number, but one day I got a phone call from my that I never met and the same last name as me. Saying that the family moved from Kagoshima to Osaka. After that I didn't understand them. They spoke heavy Kansai dialect, and I still have problems with today. I have passed the Japanese knowledge test level 1, when there was no such thing sd the different types of level 1. That was probably the hardest and longest non-physical exam I have ever taken. Of course I ook the level 2 first that ws difficult but in between I got married to a Japanese woman. I had worked for American firms for 7 years and worked at British investment bank in Tokyo. I was on a work visa (and as you've said, you nee to have a college degree to get the visa), then right after I bot married, I got a spousal visa (while was quite daunting) working visas were fare easier to get and they expire and last 3 years Instead of the 1 year expiry until I got my permanent resident visa. I was able to buy a house in Tokyo and house in my home town. Then we sold our house in Tokyo then bought another house which I still own with my wife, but I still have property tax. So, we never need a hotel when we travel to Tokyo.we go home. Why id we leave Japan? Believe it or not. I didn't want my children educated in Japan The open house at my daughter's school I asked the teacher what happens when a child wishes to move ahead in her studies. In effect, they will be hammered down. Not exact translations butt that is how I took it and when I talked to other teachers and a few principals they all agreed. I firmly believe that is unacceptable. When I was in school in LA, I was in the gifted program. We could move as fast as we wanted as long as we completed the minimum required to move to the next level. We had some reading program and you had to complete it. We all completed it by Winter break. Some of finished the math and my friend was doing calculus when we were in 5th grade. His father was a math professor at UCLA so he had been teaching his children math at very high levels and speed. So, you could proceed at your own pace. My daughter had a rough start in reading and writing. One day I got a call from the school, that they wanted to meet with both parents. The principal and the teacher wanted to move her back from the 3rd grade back to the 2nd grade. I said I'll think about it if I could get it in writing. This was in the height of "no child left behind". Of course the refused, so I shrug my shoulders said no she is staying in the 3rd grade. My mother, who was a teacher, she retired a few years later, but she tutored our daughter after school and since our timing was such that we could only get our children in our church's after school program, they let my mother spend some time tutoring our daughter. In Hawai`i, there are state level checks and everyone has to pass the test, I later learned, would affect the teacher's salary, both negative and positive. The ESL program started 4 months after the school year started. I didn't understand why it started so late but when I went to the first meeting, that they do with the parents. They showed us the book that they would start out our daughter, I recognized the book and it was the same one that my mother used. I asked if there were three in the series and the ESL teacher said there were three. To which I said, did you talk to her and her teacher, they said only the teacher. So, what are you going to do. I told them my mother is a teacher and is tutoring her and using this same book and the two others. So, the spoke to her and she confirmed in perfect English that she had completed those. Her 3rd grade teacher was the advising teacher for English for the district. So, they were going to observe her. By Spring break they were exiting her from the ESL program. Our son didn't fare so well. He was in ESL until the second grade. This was all my fault. They had a full native English speaker living with them but I only spoke to them in Japanese. But they hung in and so did we as parents. They graduated from the same school that I graduated from. Both have graduated from college. Our daughter is an engineer and our son is a Registered Nurse. They both have retained their Japanese speaking ability even though they were prevented from taking Japanese and instead learned Spanish. Japan has changed a lot over the last decade.
