These videos are some of the best jazz piano pedagogy I've ever encountered. You're not only an absolute shredder with a wealth of knowledge, but you're a very thoughtful and articulate teacher. Just bought your book and would love to take some lessons with you someday.

I'm a young pianist (just turned 21 and been playing jazz for almost 4 years now.) and with so little experience, sometimes it's easy to feel like I'm getting stuck in a rut or playing the same kind of stuff a lot. Your playing reminds me just how much of a privilege it is to play the piano and what's beautiful, complex, and interesting instrument it really is. I'm trying to get my learning mindset more into how young kids learn by following my curiosity and really being attentive to the sound and quality of what I'm learning rather than trying to intellectualize everything. My ears are improving, but by nature, I think I'm a very visual person, so I love to see what your hands are doing while you play. My focus is to keep my eyes on the long-term, not worrying so much about how good I sound now to other people now. I just want to keep finding sounds I like adjacent to the ones I know well and expand my understanding of the music by being patient and really letting myself absorb what's already near me. Thanks for your beautiful playing. It's very evocative of some gorgeous imagery and you really create a fun world for me to explore!

Very good! I have been teaching, performing for a l...o...n...g time-but this is one of the clearest explanations of Shearing style block chords that has actually got me to understand harmonically what he was doing.

18:31 after you resolve "A" to "G", on second G you harmonize it with a G diminished. That sparked the idea to see the resolved G as a none-chord tone and then resolve that to maybe an "F" sharp in D major chord. Thank you!

you lost me on octatonic! so this technique is to play chords on every melody note, interesting, sounds nice. Thanks!
@JeremySiskind
@JeremySiskind 3 года назад
Yep, exactly, we're playing a different chord for every melody note. It's a very classic jazz sound. The octatonic is just extra color - don't stress about that one. :)

Jeremy - Wanted to say that from my abilities, level 1 is already a lot. (paused at 8:41) I mean, I understand and can follow for sure, and I have the concept committed to memory after the one viewing, but execution is another monster. I have yet to put my fingers to the test, but I picture myself doing this slowly even in C, till my fingers learn the muscle memory needed, I suppose. 2's simple enough. 3 - 18:45 - with the C 7, you're building a G chord? Why not a C chord? 4 - Thick with tech, but I can follow. Hilarious about the slip of Plagal and Lydian. I totally get that! 5 - Not bad. Can follow. :) Love the quick arpeggios. 6 - Great way to tie it all together. I'm trying to get my chops up to snuff, and been practicing regularly again with decent results. Even since I saw you play in the talent show, I always had a pipe dream of being as good as you. :) I got some work to do before I'm ready to master this, and I have a couple books lined up I want to work through first. But after that, I'm coming for yours. Liked and subscribed. Keep up the good work, man. Let's keep in touch. Thanks a ton for the vid.
@JeremySiskind
@JeremySiskind 3 года назад
Thanks for the detailed response! Regarding 18:45, I'm building a C7 chord from the melody G (remember, this type of voicing is always built from the melody note). So I'm including the 3rd & 7th of C7, plus the root or the 9th. I hope that clears things up! :)
@StevenJacks
@StevenJacks 3 года назад
@@JeremySiskind Still a little fuzzy. From the ground up, is it (C) E G Bb D or is it G Bb D and E as the 6th? Or... these are the same so it doesn't matter? haha.
@JeremySiskind
@JeremySiskind 3 года назад
@@StevenJacks Yeah, you have to imagine the bass note at the bottom of these voicings to truly discover what chord it is. Otherwise, it's easy to mistake the melody note for the root because it will always be at the bottom. The same issue happens with a C6 with the A in the melody. It looks like an Am7, but you have to imagine the C being on bottom.

@JeremySiskind

Thanks! I'm always working to improve my audio-video quality. Sometimes my piano actually just gets buzzy from wood expanding/contracting. It's very frustrating, but sometimes that's just the result of playing an instrument with some soul. :)

Hi Jeremy, found your lessons and they are amazing, I love that you go into advanced stuff, and the OP quotes What chords are happening around 25:55? It looks like you are doing fast F6 (Dm7) arpeggios ; then FMaj7 ; then AbMaj7 ; then ??... You lost me after the 3rd voicing, if any, please help ;)
@JeremySiskind
@JeremySiskind 3 года назад
Hey there - I'm glad you're enjoying the lessons! Good ear - it sounds like I'm playing a Dm7, Fm then an Abmaj7(#5). The next few chords are coming from a G altered scale (same notes as Ab melodic minor). I hope that helps!

At 16:44 couldn't you also play a Bb Dim7 over the A so as to create tension in the chord?
@JeremySiskind
@JeremySiskind 3 года назад
Probably? I think if you resolve it nicely, you could make it work.
@charlesperforms
@charlesperforms Год назад
yeah if you put the Bb dim7 over the A you just need to move the outer notes to G when you hit C7, very bud Powell sounding movement
