Really enjoying watching all your Redwing videos, I'm planning to buy a pair of 1907s in the next couple of weeks, it would be great to see a quick video of how these are looking now. Thanks 👌
I’ve owned probably 8 pairs of the Heritage line from Red Wings over the years and the 1907 are the most comfortable for me. The wider last is the biggest benefit.
When you go for a rebuild you might consider a 2 part sole instead of a wedge unit, I had my 2913s done with an oak bark tanned leather midsole then half inch soloflex firm crepe then Vibram 148 SBR lug outsole
That’s my plan, figured I wear out the soft vibram white sole first before going for something else. If you don’t mind me asking, how much did it cost for new sole?
Nice review, bought a pair one week ago and I overdid it a little bit, I actually was doing some standup yoga poses to stretch them out and I developed a blister on my right heel so that set me back for a while, although they started getting very comfortable and I love the stability especially around the ankles and as far as the soft sole I believe it gives you more cushioning support so there’s a trade off, The gentleman I bought mine from put mink oil on Them at the store and he recommends every couple of weeks then putting the boots in the hot sun just soak in, it does darken them but looks really cool, I can’t wait to get them back on. Thanks.
Update. Watch out for slippery ground like wet grass, mud or light snow. Those soles have no grip at all when the profile is partly gone. And that happens really fast as the material of the sole is very comfortable but also very soft and wears down rather easily.
Every time you review a pair of Dr Martens, you have disappointing news. When talking about Red Wing, you are beaming with enthusiasm and praise. It may be time to accept that the former aren’t that great.
Nonsense - the former are excellent. I wear mine ever day and they're like slippers. Also Doc Martens have infinately more 'street cred' even if they do wear out twice as quickly.!! Lol.. ;) P.S. I wore my shiniest (black) pair with a black suit to my son's wedding last Saturday..!!
@@sputumtube Paul, you’re obviously still a boy at heart. Dr Martens stopped having ‘street cred’ over 40 years ago. You remind me of a funny story. I went to work for a day at a relatives factory, wearing my (vintage) all black steel toe Dr Martens. One gentleman, in his 60s, looked at the boots and paid a compliment. ‘When I was younger,’ he said, ‘having Doc Martens boots meant you had mates.’ lol
@@RevJamesCostello You're absolutely right Rev. Now at the age of 58, nobody I know can remember how 'cool' they once were except me. Perhaps I should stop living in the past!! Don't know if you've been on the DM website recently but they've got some truly awful creations on there now.
You are right not overdoing the maintenance of these 1907’s. They are waterproof and oily and stay that way for a long time without soaking them in oil or beeswax. Maybe a very small bit of mink oil every year, I use Fiebing’s. The break in period is far from normal, as this leather is so tough, they won’t mould to your feet very easily.
Great boot leather on em is unbelievable. If you buy these boots for work you can just keep getting new soles put on them over and over again. Very glad I bought these pair of redwings.
I bought my 1907s a couple weeks ago after watching your videos. Love them. But one leather lace broke the first time I laced it up. I like the alternate laces better anyway. Thanks for your very detailed videos.
Yea the leathers laces are more for style if you pull on them real tight they will brake. The other laces are more durable and more for work. Both look great tho these boots are top notch. The leather on these boots are unbelievable. If you buy these boots for work you can just keep getting new soles over and over again.
John Smith I ended up purchasing a pair of Thorogood Moc’s I caught on sale at a phenomenal price I am working the 1907’s in the budget though, in my opinion they are the most attractive Moc toe out. Thank you for the follow up!
I just came home from the red wing store. They measured my foot and gave me 1907 in 11.5. It felt too big so I tried size 11D and they are perfect. The others I tried, Iron rangers, 875, ect needed to be 10.5. So it’s true to size down with red wings but I found 1907s to be true to size. I wear an 11 in Thorogoods and Danners too. 1907 is true to size.
i bought these! love them. i think you can condition them without darkening by using either of redwing's "boot cream" or their "leather cream". their other products are better for waterproofing but also darken. but it looks like they don't need much waterproofing?
Watch Rose Anvil's review. The Norwegian welt doesn't provide any waterproofness but its a great boot otherwise. For this reason I have to keep shopping.
I went out in the woods behind our house to clear some debris and scratched up my new 1907's pretty good. I wish I hadn't. My wife says it's OK, because they're work boots. The scratches aren't deep. Just superficial. I tried brushing them out, to no avail. I guess I will just live with the scratches. Maybe they will come out when I give the boots their first taste of cream in about a month or two.
Very interesting how light yours are, I have a pair I just picked up and have worn a couple times and they are very dark with no added treatment to the leather.. Interesting the differences in leather!
Would you consider taking a tour of the Solovair factory, and filming it, as well as a walking tour of the surrounding historic buildings and area? I don't know if I'll ever make it across the pond, and would love to see this stuff.
Thanks for your review. I just bought me a pair my very first pair. They’re great …………(anyone special that you have to send your boots for the vibram re sole?
I wear US12 EU46 in everything... Sometimes a EU45 in some shoes. However in Red Wings i am a US11 which is are labelled as EU44.. so one size down in US size, but two sizes down in EU size. 🤪
I tried leather laces on my 10875 straight from the dealer. I wore them for a few days and wondered what the original laces would feel like. Such a difference going back to the original woven lace. Maybe once by boots break in a bit more I’ll go back but the larger laces seem to be very bulky and add the pressure points over the top of the foot. Obviously everyone is difference but I think the more minimal size of the woven lace makes for a more comfortable break in in the beginning. Excited to be able to throw the leathers back in though. It makes for a nice looking work boot.
@@DevonReviewer it just goes to show you everyone is a little different in terms of the break in of their footwear. Did your 875s turn that dark reddish color on their own with age?
Beef tallow is my go to for leather care....the very fat of the animal the leather is sourced from..Also..it is the best hand cream on the earth.Become one with the leather.
Red wing leather cream is the way to go. It doesnt over hydrate the leather and it only VERY SLIGHTLY darkens the leather at first but within about 30-40mins of wearing them when its dried, the leather will move the oils around and lighten up again. Just be sure to use it sparingly. A little goes a long way
I've been looking at getting a pair of 875s for a while, and it looks like the best way to protect the boot while keeping the colour is to use the leather cream (I've heard this mentioned in several reviews) Hope that helps! www.redwingshoes.com/accessories/care-products/leather-cream-97095.html?cgid=care-products
The sole is slippy on wet rock or on steep mud but honestly they’re otherwise nice boots to walk in if your feet find a bit of firmness agreeable and can get used to the soles being heavy. Bizarrely my arches get more tired in proper walking boots.
Great video!!! I don't know if anyone asked this question but how much did it cost to resole those 875's? I think that's what you said they were. I bought the 1907's and would love to put those same soles on these! Thanks in advance if you get back to me!
I read that if you buy your true size in the Red Wing (and don't size down like everyone says) that there is no pain or break in period. This person said that the pain comes from having boots that are too small with leather than won't give. Any advice?
Just got a used pair of 975s. Obviously they're awesome, but I gotta know, how to people get these things on and off?? Do I really need to unlace them half the way down to get them on comfortably? I even got a long shoe horn and it did little to help. Size seems to be right. Any tips on this?
Thanks for this review it has been one of the better ones I have seen, I am hovering over these at the minute due to sizing , redwing tell me to go true to size (uk8) I have had 875 and gone down to 7.5uk but get terrible heel rub every wear, any advice on sizing ?
Im confused with sizing. 41.5 feels way too tight on the toes so I bought 42 and my heels are rubbing up and down while walking as if its too big. Grrrrrrr. 😬
This model boot is a part of the “heritage” collection, making the price higher than your average work boot. You might catch a boujee contractor wearing these
I see people at work wearing Thorogood moc toes. They're a couple hundred bucks and more sneaker-like in feel. Red wings have higher quality leather, look more elegant, but don't have any shank. You could wear them for work and it wouldn't be *totally* out of place, but I personally wouldn't.
I know a couple of high iron guys who swear by 877s but workboots now are highly specialized to the specific task the workman performs and the environment of the particular job, Red Wing has an extensive catalog for real workboots.
Well I'm now 8 months into wearing my pair daily at work in the bodyshop. They're doing great considering how much sparks, metal shavings, rubbing directly onto concrete while kneeling, water, the occasional soccer kick to a empty cardboard box lmao. Although the tread is definitely getting thinned out from all the walking.
Great Channel BTW. I have a question though - It does look like this white sole unit will get very dirty very quickly - as a 6 month long term test, your 1907's look relatively pristine. If you've been doing coast paths I'd imagine they'd be interestingly marked by now. Easily cleanable? Or would you also re-sole with a Vibram Lug Sole when worn???
Do you have any advice about heel slip? I'm a few days into the break-in and finding that my heel will slip unless I tie the boots almost uncomfortably tight. wondering if it will improve with more break-in or whether my local redwing store sized me incorrectly. Thanks!
Leather is very sturdy and high quality. Also good against rain and wet grass if you oil them a few times a year. Soles are slippery after a few months of use when the traction profile wears down.
PT111111 yes. It should take almost 2 years of constant wear to destroy the white sole. They most definitely should be broken in by than. You could probably break them in multiple times over by the time the sole needs replaced.
A company riding on the coattails of their past making a crappy product and charging you an arm and a leg. Giving made in the USA a black eye. I bought a pair, 3 months in the sole started coming off the boot. Never got them wet, I work in a warehouse. Company replaced them without a hassle. Next pair came with a giant black streak across the whole toe box. Returned them and was sent a THIRD pair. Even more larger black streaks and the leather was dry (made label was a year old). I get they are work boots, but I will get them dirty and stained not right out of the box. Returning for a refund and buying a pair of whites perrys
Hi Devon, can i ask you how the traction of these boots holds up in rain and snow in a urban enviroment ? I'm planning to buy these boots for the winter time.
I find the traction tred sole to work just fine in the winter with snow and ice, although with ice I'm always very careful no matter which shoe/boot I'm wearing. Because the sole is soft and grippy, it allows them to make a lot of contact with the ground, but I imagine once they're starting to wear down it will be an issue. And they wear decently fast from what I've seen, but mine have been holding up for a while since I rotate through quite a few pairs of boots. In rain they're 100% fine, I wouldn't be afraid to do a light jogging pace in some rain in them. With that said, there are probably better options for your needs, like the vibram mini-lug. Though I personally haven't noticed a difference between that and the traction tred so far, in terms of actual traction in snow, ice, and rain (never really think about it).
duimdraaier1 i prefer the vibram lug sole for the winter time. Like what his 875’s have or see the roughneck boots. The traction tred is quite slippery in anything but a light dusting of snow. Where inlive our winters can be quite snowy, so I wear my 8146 when i want a nicer looking boot than my normal salomon hiking boots.
For the winter I use my Timberland heritage 6 inch classic boots. A kind of rough and tough version. They are insulated, waterproof and have good grip on snow. Ice is always slippery, so I stay away from that if possible. They have a break in period, so wear them so now and then before the winter arrives.
Daniel Gmür they are the same size but 1907 comes with an insole which you might find 1907 a bit snug at first but once you’ve broken them in, they became very comfortable. You can remove the insole if the boots are tight. I have the Iron ranger, 87519, 10875 and 1907 and I must admit that the 1907 are very attractive thanks to Copper R&T leather but they are heavy and bulky IMO.
I just bought these exact boots in a size 9D and I usually wear a size 10 in most of my other shoes. Hope this helps. Also, I never thought I would be in a size 9 but these are so comfortable. It's only been a couple days so I'm really looking forward to the future of how comfortable these will become. They are meant to be snug not loose. So that's my take. Love these 1907's.!!!!!!
Nice review. I'm am pondering between these and the 875s lately. I see you're wearing a Rolex. Nice! I have seen you in other videos with an SKX (also nice). I'm guessing that is a GMT due to the PCLs.
If you still haven't made a decision. I own the 1907s. Just know that they ARE the 875s, just upgraded. The welt is a little taller for added water resistance, and it allows for a removable insert. The 1907 is excellent.
@@nope5481 I tried the 1907 and the Oxblood version of the 875 (can't remember the style #). At the time they did not have the 875 in my size, so I purchased the Oxblood version, with a little hesitation. It's almost as if they are *too* nice for a workboot. I may get a 2nd pair (next black Friday) I can relegate to outdoor work, probably the roughneck, which is similar to the 875 but with a lug sole. I do really enjoy these Oxbloods though, they look and feel great. I picked up a pair of Iron Rangers for the wife as well. She's worn them once :(
@@joeschlicht so which did you prefer? I went in intent on buying the 875. Ended up liking those 1907s though. The removable insert is what sold me. That little bit of extra water resistace is a small bonus.
@@nope5481 Well I bought the oxbloods (8856), so I think it's safe to assume I preferred those:) The 1907s felt bulky to me, I have narrow feet, and the 875s fit more snuggly.
@@joeschlicht haha, I fee like a fool. Misread your post. Thought you said that you bought both. Glad you like what you got. Let's all keep buying American 🇺🇲🦅
I have 5 pairs of Redwings, 3 pair are Oro, 1 Copper and 1 Oil slick.. I’d guess you got a pair that are Oro and perhaps in a mislabeled box? Check out the US Redwing site, Heritage page. Copper looks basically nothing like the color you have. Just sayin Thx for the video. Appreciate different peoples opinions. And obviously I’m boot and Redwing obsessed. Different boots for different applications but my favorite are the old man boots. The slip on Pecks, in Oro!! I believe the only color option on that pair. Fortunately it is my favorite Redwing color
Wish it was a real Norwegian welt because it’s not, it’s fake and it doesn’t add any extra water protection, which is a shame for the price of the boot 😭
For me these soles are for comfort not long lasting, the boots last but I’d factor in a resole within a couple of years - and for me, I’d go for a different stepped commando sole.
those boots are not made for walking in the woods, they are made for construction workers mostly iron workers NO heals, if you want boots for hunting and fishing get the right boot for that?
@@proper60 I don't think you understand what constructive criticism means.. in no way did I, or would I, take your criticism of a boot as a personal slight..
@@DevonReviewer maybe my comment came off the wrong way. I had a pair of 1907 and the absolutely killed my feet. I was never able to properly break them in so i got rid of them. I know several people who also dint like this boot because its very uncomfortable. Dint mean your boot is horrible. But the 1907 itself is.
