Hi, Ben! North Florida Fall gardens are the best! I've got seed trays of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, rutabagas, collards and lettuces already sown, and today, I started three 162 cell trays of sweet, short-day, onions. In the next few weeks, I'll be direct seeding English peas, beets, and carrots to over-winter. I'm hoping all goes well, like last year.

I've got lettuce, arugula, radishes, cress, green onions, and kale sown for the fall garden. I'm in growing zone 3B, and have no problems overwintering fall-planted garlic. You just need to bury the cloves deep enough and cover it with straw or leaves. It's one of the first things to pop up in the spring.

Interesting to hear your comments on Rocket. I sowed it the same time as Lettuce in early June, and I barely got 2 weeks out of the wild rocket, whilst I'm still feasting on the lettuce! And I didn't even pick the rocket as often as I should, owing to newbie confusion (thought it was a weed at one stage). Will try resowing it soon then with garlic. The other day I sowed beetroot for 1st time, hopes it not too late in our temperate climate.

Brussels sprouts!!! And lots of other brassicas... Brassicas do incredible things in the cold, they get sweeter and bright and clean tasting. The best Brussels sprouts are those you dig out of the snow... They are incredible, absolutely delicious, the veggie I look forward to the most each year... (yes, I grow them all year round), but the ones dug out of the snow are completely different and I could never eat enough of them. Agribon frost covers and the green house keeps me in veggies all year round, but those brassicas get the full brunt of winter and make your mouth smile when they get covered in snow. Deep winter is my favorite time of the year for veggies... While I love fresh sweet corn and melons, and spring/summer what not, and I love fall and winter squashes, nothing compares to those snow picked brassicas. Nothing!!!

Hello Tim, I never heard of "Agribon frost cover", is that a brand name? What plants do you put it on, do you ever put it on brassicas over winter? I'm going to try growing some kale, kalettes, cabbage, all are started and planted out now as tiny plants. I didn't know if they need a little protection if growing over winter (Scottish Borders).

Excellent stuff. As usual, we're growing arugula, romaine, and a mesclun salad mix of red kale, leaf lettuces, endive and chervil in pots which I'll move into the garage when a deep frost threatens. I live a mile from Lake Erie, and our early winters are mild since the lake retains a lot of heat. So we harvest fresh salad greens through late December when sans greenhouse, the cold and lack of sun tilts the cost/ benefit in the direction of buying romaine hearts at the grocery. However, we'll be harvesting our mature kale and Brussel sprouts through most of the winter, and they taste better after a frost, IMHO.

Peppers (and chilli peppers) can do reasonably well on a sunny windowsill. Also salad leaves, though in midwinter you really need a grow light to give them enough light to continue growing healthily. Also worth trying pots of leafy herbs, from which you can take cuttings on the windowsill. Oh, and definitely try sprouting seeds: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f1bAHlmIR88.html

I'm keen to get going, but as a complete beginner, would I be better off waiting until Spring to start?
@Outdoorsimplicity
@Outdoorsimplicity 2 года назад
I’m at the same stage as you, good luck! I bought some fleece. I saw a video that says to put a plank of wood at an angle propped up against the outer edge of the bed for slugs to hide under
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 2 года назад
You may not need netting/fleece - but add it if you do find birds are a problem and nip at your young seedlings. For slugs, just be sure to remove any lying debris so there are fewer places for them to hide. Or put a plank of wood down as Hayley suggests then collect up and remove the slugs regularly as they hide beneath it. I'd leave slug traps until next spring.

It's called a beer trap. Bury a container up to its neck in the soil. Pour beer in to the container. Slugs and snails are attracted to the raps and drown drunk and happy.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 4 года назад
As Ed says, it's a very effective way of trapping slugs. I empty it out every few days to a week, tipping the lot under a shrub and then re-filling. You can use the cheapest beer available - don't waste the good stuff!

GrowVeg Ha! Wine a plenty here 🥂. Guess I have to make a beer run! 🏃‍♀️ 💃 Before I go... It’s midnight and thought I heard something in the coop. One fell off the perch sheesh but no biggie 🤷‍♀️🐓 However when I walked passed my tomato plants I noticed one almost picked clean. Horn worms! 🐛 What is their favorite beverage?!! 😁

Is it ok to plant broccoli now(in September) if I live in zone 5B? Thank you.
@PlasticusForkus
@PlasticusForkus 4 года назад
Why don't you just give it a go and see how you get on?
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 4 года назад
You're right at the end of the possible window for planting broccoli. If you have young plants ready to go in the ground - and you then have another month of reasonable growing weather - there is a chance you may be successful. But it is rather late. But as PlasticusForkus says, it's worth a try.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli is winter hardy and would be your best bet for planting now. Best of luck.

when you say '' particularly cold winter '' , what temperature is that , i consider our winters here in the south east of england quite cold but never actually checked the temperature so don't know if i should sow some seeds under cover in the greenhouse .
@UmmDuzzina
@UmmDuzzina 4 года назад
I doubt your winters get that cold there. Particularly cold would be lots of snow and below freezing for long periods of time (lower than -10°C, I’d say). Like Scotland perhaps, or the north of Scandinavia. Winters in the Midlands are mild, comparatively, here I grow garlic, onions and broad beans etc over winter without problems.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 4 года назад
Yes, I would say your winters are mild, so you can get on and sow them as normal.

I've already planted my garlic and onion sets.....have I peaked too early? I'm a newbie can you tell! :)
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 4 года назад
It probably is a bit early as they will put on a big spurt of growth if the weather is still warm and may then get hammered by the cold. But let's see how you get on - you may have the biggest bulbs of the lot of us next spring!

What varieties of lettuce are winter hardy? I'm in US zone 6b

Hey Karen, here's some examples for you. I'm sure these varieties are available from other seed companies too: www.westcoastseeds.com/collections/lettuce-seeds

Some great suggestions from Amanda there - thanks Amanda. I'd also add varieties such as 'Winter Density' and 'Grenoble Red', though these are varieties sold in the UK, so I'm unsure as to whether they'd be available in the US.

... what hardiness zones are you talking?!? I'm in 4.5 USDA HARDINESS ZONE.
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg 4 года назад
It does vary somewhat. The advice here is based on an 'average' of zone 8 or thereabouts, but the advice would apply to other zones to varying degrees. Your winters are very hard so winter salads would need some form of cold protection, and you would probably be best off starting fava beans in the spring. I would have hesitated about garlic (and onion sets) but Amanda Talon, who has also left a comment for this video, has this to say: 'I'm in growing zone 3B, and have no problems overwintering fall-planted garlic. You just need to bury the cloves deep enough and cover it with straw or leaves. It's one of the first things to pop up in the spring.'
