The numbers aren't doing these cars justice. The shake and rattle and shear loudness, the in your guts feeling and fantastic quarter miles are what these cars were about. Outrageous styling, the crazy Mopar colours, big ass Mickey Thompsons and BFG's, Cragar and Centre Line! Striping, hood scoops, Hurst shifters....the zero-60 or 62 times of these cars aren't that fast when you compare them to a great many cars built in the seventies, eighties and nineties, including a plethora of Japanese cars. The point is, that they weren't about 0-60, they were about top speeds over limited distance, acceleration in the passing lane and the way they did it, loud, shaking, crazy...odours, noises, textures, shine, and smoke. Loved the shapes and styles though I could never understand the concept of ruining expensive tires for a smoke-show. Sure, warm the rubber for grip on a take-off, but to just destroy them for smoke? That must be a crayon-eating, I must punch you because you glanced in my general direction, I wear a baseball cap to formal dinners thing. I don't know.
Remember these times were done with factory bias ply tires 205 - 60 -14 (some had 15) were the widest ! The had zero traction ! No track compounds like today Most tests were done on parking lots or side streets My buddies 1968 120,000 mile 383 2bbl 2.76 axle Chrysler Newport ran 14.80's to 15 flat all the time (Uncle owned the local track in the 1970's and 80's we ran our cars when it was closed) My stock 1968 Charger RT 440 Magnum ,727,3.23 gear car ran 12.80's with pro trac 275 -60 series in 1976-77...Only tuned/jetted the carb..I later added a duel plane intake, headers car ran low 12's again no cam or engine mods.. My Low Compression 1972 Road Runner 400 4bbl ran 13.90's,again a low compression engine.
A good friend had a Chevelle 454, built up with big cam, headers, etc. It was fast in its day. Unfortunately, he not only liked to hot rod, but also liked to ride around and drink beer. One night he thought he could outrun the cop's, but their radio was too fast, and he went to jail. Lol
I see by the comments a lot of cars missed and they're a little bit pissed off, and rightly so. 426 Hemi CUDA, Pontiac GTO Judge 455, 427 Stingray, Cobra Jet Mustang and many others overlooked. I personally loved all of these muscle cars growing up in the 70's, didn't have a favorite. Just loved the sound and the looks and insane smoke shows at the car meets. Oh well, maybe next time they'll put together a proper list, Top 10, not 7. Who does a top 7 anyways?? Just sayin
@@drewskinator0076 well Graveyard Carz has restored a number of these and Mark is noted for doing great stock rebuilds. and they don't sound like this one.
@@drewskinator0076 looks wouldn't tell the story. the lopping is caused by cam profile (you can't eyeball that). more displacement and higher compression wouldn't be visible either.
YOU GUYS ARE ARGUING FOR NOTHING,these cars in my youth, you could hammer them, and beat them, all they would do was annihilate your new rubber, then drive them to work all week,as for the FORDS they had the heavy guns,427,428 stroking ,smoking rubber burning sobs, they all ran,AMERICAN IRON, just take your damn pick, cars from 1963-1971 were bulletproof,W30'S GAVE MY 6PACK CHALLENGER HELL,LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT
Funny to think that the modern muscle base model v6 cars all hit the low 5 second 0-60 times and the v8s hit the mid 4s. I think right now is the golden age of muscle not then!
I wish Buick would come out with a new version of the Grand National GNX. I don't think they will do anything like that anymore. They have the Camaro and Corvette. They wont SS anything else or make any other fast car. It is not cost effective. Look at the Hellcat, Challenger. It is not cost effective but people want the Challenger even the 6 cylinder version. So it sells cars, not that version but Challenger in general. I don't get why they wont anymore. I have the Chevy SS, probably the last non Camaro SS GM will make I think .
Yes, my favorite cars more appropriate. Ex. Pontiac firebird bird 455SD did mid 12 twelves off the showroom floor. If you could get one. Olds had a few also.
My late but great father had the challenger R/T, sold when I was very young. He wanted to keep it as he said to my mum “our boy will love this when he can drive it”...he intended to gift it to me on my 18th but keep it on storage till then. My mum said no, it’s too loud, too fast and waaaaay to heavy on fuel!!! This was also in the very early 80’s and Britain, so they were rare as rocking horse shit/hen’s teeth and where petrol is as good as £6 a gallon now ( $8.32). My mum won. My dad was gutted....not as gutted as I am now though....and I guess this proves that although it’s exceptionally rare...once in a while, on occasion...Mum ISNT always right!
Dean Cooling yo I had a 70 RT.440.it had been in storage for 10 years. It had 8 miles on a fresh engine. When I got it . The car had open headers it was fast I mean for what it was .
You're out of your mind if you think this Challenger sounded remotely like this as it rolled off the showroom floor. Tire for tire but otherwise absolutely 100% production line stock, the typical 4 year old Honda Accord V6 wouldn't up a thing to any of the cars in this video, realizing the Accord is hardly a paragon of performance by today's standards. Also, this video is a mess in terms of technical accuracy.
Wake up ford never had a fast car they tried but always took a back seat to a mopar ask around who is top dog they will tell ya I got a fast car but I don't mess with them mopars
i agree , it was a 350 LT like most of the Corvettes played so much on those engins back in the days . and the 454 had wider valve covers cause they had wider heads
The 429 was really only fast after riding for a VERY long time, in a race it would get trounced by a lot of motors that are a lot smaller. The 427 was so limited in production that it was kept by collectors almost exclusively and never raced, the Hemi was so expensive that basically nobody had a car with one even then cars with smaller motors could be hot fodder to the extent that they were faster easily
@@deadinsidemcgee411 that's a big negative bud. Today yes you can modify a small block that'll make a old big block look slow but back in the day that wasn't really happening. Either way it goes the Buick 455, LS6 454 and the 426 in a Cuda would outrun every single vehicle on this list. It's very well documented and several Magazines also did comparisons with the Hemicuda generally being the fastest.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I would have thought that they would have had each and every one of those you mentioned. They didn't mention ONE Hemi.
I mention this sometimes but i was a development Lab tech, mechanic, driver and Dyno operator from 69 past 1980. 440 6 pack was my baby i did the 1970 set up. I had the best job in the world. Just home from VN with a honorable.
I see people post all of the time of how they were 200 MPH right out of the showroom......people have no clue, for example standard valve stems will not survive 200mph and there were NO street tires rated anywhere close to that......the superbird NEVER turned a 200 mph lap during a race or qualifying.
Great list! I'm just surprised the Dodge Daytona, Buick GSX Stage 1, Ford Mustang Mach 1, or Ford Mustang Boss were not on the list for additional cars.
you don't even have the number 1 engine on here... was the most powerfull production engine till mid 2000's... the ford 427 cammer... and why the hell is the c3 corvette on here? maybe fastest top end... by NO means in the race... IRS was horrible without MAJOR work on it to launch reliably fail clickbait vid
narmale Title says cars. Cammer was never a regular option, strictly over the counter but they were the top HP of the factory heap. Studebaker/Avanti R2 was a very fast machine due to lack of weight. RA IVs were under rated. GS Stage 1s were a ringer in most cases. 66 L79 Nova and V8 Gremlins, again lack of weight. These were cars most people could afford. Now go to the short run stuff like Hurst Darts, ZL1s, COPOs, T-Bolts, Stage IIs, whole other story
the ford 427 cammer was never put in a production car from ford. it was basically an exotic engine built in very low numbers because of the high cost. nascar banned it for this reason but it was allowed in nhra afx classes .
narmale where the fuck do you get your bs information from? The HD versions of the IRS handled l-88 power no problem. And C3 was the fastest car in every year of the 70's from the 70' 454 to the 79 L-82. Choke on it.
I'm a Camaro guy, but I remember a guy that had a blue 442 that ran with open headers. You could always tell when he approached the parking lot - felt like a 5.5 earthquake. You had to keep an eye on your watch because you couldn't hear the school bell.
Put modern suspension, wheels, tires and brakes on ANY of these “dinosaurs” and subtract an easy 2 seconds off any of their times and about 20 plus feet off their braking distance
Back in the day as a teenager I pleaded for a 73/74 Pontiac's Trans Am 455 SD,4spd. But,as my 1st car he chose a Buick GS STAGE 1 4spd w/power everything. A/C, 3.42:1 posi. I feel in love,my dad always got a Riviera GS STAGE 1 every 2/3years. He heard from my big mouth neighbors on how did saw me drive his new cars. I &5ppl had crazy fun going to the beaches, camping, drive ins, great adventure, long rides. 1 time late all my passengers were sleeping. I smoothly brought it up to 120mph. Steady as a rock. No regrets. The only mods were steel belted sport radials & a fiberglass engine fan. Not many mods were available for Buick GS @ the time. But, she sure loved her SUNOCO. My gal pals despised all the love, attn,& $$$ I spent on her. Had some nice races, for $$$,but, I chose them very carefully. My dad as usual was correct in getting me the BUICK GS STAGE 1. ♥️👑
They displayed the 1970 Chevelle LS6 454 450 HP car but then showed a 1971 detuned low compression car drag racing. Unfortunately, the LS6 450 HP engine was only offered in the 1970 Chevelle SS, even the '70 Vette was equipped with lower 425 HP rating...go figure.
Frist off to Paul the cobras where build in the mid sixtys and I and my family have been in all forms of racing since the Sixties But let's get back to this GENTLEMAN Post obviously he didn't grow up at drag strips in the late sixties and early seventies let's take 1970 for example Ford built the Cobra428 Jets in the Torino 68-69 and 1970 and in 1970 ford built the 429 super COBRA jet in the Torino and my uncle was class champion in mid michigan in pure stock with 7 inch slicks 12:90,s in the quarter mile
Old cars had no traction...tracks had no compounds like today .most tests were done on side streets and parking lots.. 185 -70 series tires and wide treads were 205- 60 series ! bias ply !!! Skinny tires they could burn rubber down 1/8 th mile track by just flooring it no brake holding ! All old car 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are bogus as they spun the tires, its not like today..Your truck is a dog compared to old cars...the smog year cars aka 1972 and newer run 13.80's to 15's.. 440's and 426 Hemi cars run 11 and 12 second 1/4 mile times with modern rubber.. Road Test with a brand new 440 4 barrel (not the 6 barrel) Cuda the car ran 14's with skinny 14 inch bias ply tires, they couldnt hook up..They put 10 inch slicks that have equal traction to a new modern radial tire on the average car,the stock not messed with new 440 4bbl Cuda ran low 12's ! My Dad still has his original 1970 440 6 barrel Cuda..automatic and 3.54 gears ..all he did was add headers and jetted the carburetors and he ran 11.80's - 11.90's all the time this is 2 weeks after he bought it brand new...Hemi guys were 10's and low 11's...high 11's with stock Hemi's but carbs were tuned and timing set properly and 8 or 10 inch slicks again cars still spun with those. Dont believe me how quick they were,my buddy had a 1968 Chrysler Newport 4 door 383 2 barrel (383 4bbl had better cam and the 383 high performance magnum etc.. had a better cam /heads/crank/carb than the 383 4bbl).. My buddies 120,000 mile not tuned 4 door Newport with a 383 2 barrel,2.76 axle ratio and single exhaust ran 14.80's to 15 flat...How,because it hooked and went ! Didnt spin ! Yes it would if you held the brake or burn rubber around corners, but at the strip it hooked and went ! I had a low compression 1974 Plymouth Satellite 400 4barrel ,3.23 gearing and it was bone stock, car was 5 years old never touched anything..it ran 13.92 -14 flat the 4 times I ran it,again not tuned,no headers bone stock..it spun a bit but not like the pre 1971 cars with higher compression and more power ! I have a 68 Charger RT I bought back in the 1970's car ran high 12's bone stock, just wider tires, pro tracs in 1976 were the widest tire I could find ,car hooked better than the 185 75 series white walls it came with brand new ! I still have those tires lol...I added headers, carb, intake in late 70's and it ran low id 12's..440 magnum,727 and 3.23 gears. My 70 300 2 door with a 440 TNT thats never rebuilt will roast the tires from a 20 mph roll, driving at 20 floor it the tires spun and this is with modern radials ! Its quicker than a new 5.7 Hemi 8 speed but slower than a 392 Hemi with a 5 speed .. I have a book of all my cars and biddies cars that we raced..My Uncle owned the local drag track and we would go during the day track to ourselves and raced..I have my book with all the cars and engines, axle ratios and stock or not...GM,Ford,Mopar and some imports..I also do bodywork/restorations and own a dealership ! I also drove and owned about 200 Ford F 150's with Eco Boost 2.7 and 3.5's and even the 5.0 and no they wont beat a 440,or even a 340....Sure a low compression smog bogged down 1972-74 era close race with them, but a few tricks to the smog cars and they run 12's..carb/intake/cam...Yes I owned about 200 Ford Eco Boost trucks,I own a dealer and we sell lots of them and I buy lots of them..Same with Gm/RAM and Tacoma trucks..as a car guy,I also buy lots of newer performance cars .. Basically a 440 in a Challenger is equal to a 392 new Challenger, remember the transmissions and transmission gearing really makes new cars go..add the same transmissions in an old car and they would be quicker than 11 and 12 second cars..Remember there is a reason people liked those cars. I cringe when I go to the track and I see poor numbers ,some people rebuild engines with mis matched heads and cam/intake and they go slower than they should lol,oh well...Gotta go.. Remember only way a Eco Boost will beat that old Challenger is if the Challenger burns rubber off the line for 1/8th of a mile ! My Unlces 426 hemi GTX lost traction shifting from 3rd to 4th ! 426 hemi 4 speed car went side ways ,wasnt good !
@@01trsmar all that work and your full of it. the new stuff is way faster out of the box. heck the new himi will walk all over a 440. what you say happened and what really happened are two different things. the 60s were way overated. those moters didn't even have alternators on them when they tested them. this didnt change until the 70s. 4x4 SUVs will out run the old 440s even if they had drag radials. take about 25 percent of any power number put out before 1975. then deduct about 2 seconds of the quarter mile time because with poorly managed valve timing not putting up a good power curve and an inefficient transmission. in fact the only way to make these dinosaurs put up anything respectable would be by installing a 3000 stahl converter and gears that would be lower than your average 1 ton truck. of course you would still get out run by a Cadillac Escalade full of groceries with the air on.
You can clearly see that silver Corvette stingray is a small block not a big block because if the two center exhaust ports that is a small block if is a big block they be equally spaced
I still think that car looks way too blocky with none of the lines or stance of the American muscle cars. Give me 10 different 60's/70's era American cars over one 600k Aussie car any day !!
I bought a new 70 Dodge challenger 440 six pack. Black with white interior. Beautiful car, but to slow for 440 cubes with tri power. Had put on headers and change out the cam with some anti pump up lifters. Plus a few other tuning tricks. About a week old and i had the engine apart. There goes the warranty. 😆😆
did you see how the Plymouth duster dusted that plum purple Challenger! In 1975 I had a 1970 Chevelle with a 396, automatic, I was 17 years old. I should of held on it
All said, where is the 1970 Pontiac GTO judge! My dad had one when we lived on base at Ft. Hood Tx, back in the day. He raced them all you have on here, but the corvette, and beat them all. Only car that could get him, he said, was the roadrunner and you don't even have that on here! They didn't call it the GOAT for nothing!
I agree. I owned a 1970 Ram Air IV GTO JUDGE when I was in high school. Not only was it the fastest car in school and in my town, it was also the best looking car around. And it wasn't hugger orange, it was one of 17 produced in 1970 that was Indica Blue.
GTOs had Posi-Track which gave them better traction with both rear wheels spinning instead of just one tire. They were stupid quick on launch because of that traction and with the 442 engine, it was impossible for other cars to catch up. That's why it's called the Goat
The title says "6 of the fastest cars", NOT, the "6 fastest cars of the 70's. This is what happens when you don't pay attention in class when you were younger.
