Yes, Swiss chard is my favorite vegetable! It is SO easy to grow in Dallas. I have 14 huge plants and I eat it in two different ways. It makes a wonderful colorful salad with carrots, tomatoes, and avocados. I also love to stir fry a mixture of meat and whatever veggies I have and then I add chopped chard to the skillet for the last few minutes of cooking. It is the most beautiful veggie!

Great video Fred. Loving that garden and loving that video quality. Keep up the good work and thanks for the tips! I'm definitely going to use everything you just taught me. I was wondering if you had a Tip 7, how to get fordhook giant to bolt and produce seeds? I really would like to get some seeds from my next sowing. I'm getting focused on being more sustainable.
@PlantSmartLivingNOW
@PlantSmartLivingNOW 4 года назад
Thank you for your kind words, The Swiss chard in my garden usually freezes before it gets an opportunity to bolt, so I’m not really able to offer you much information as far as producing seeds. I hope you have a bountiful garden season!

Wow your garden is amazing. I'm a NYC girl but trying to learn to grow some vegetables now that I'm almost 50, lol. I'm going to plant ford hook and rainbow chard this weekend. How long does it usually take for the chard to germinate and mature?
@PlantSmartLivingNOW
@PlantSmartLivingNOW 4 года назад
Hi Leesah, germination for Swiss chard is usually 7 to 10 days, it will take close to two months to reach maturity but you can start picking the leaves when they are anywhere from 4 to 6 inches tall, make sure you just pick the outer leaves when you harvest, I hope this helps...also, make sure you keep those seeds moist during the germination period!

Kale is awesome for juicing and green smoothies but I've found swiss chard is even milder and even more difficult to taste in the green smoothie. I prefer a green smoothie with as much of the good veggies in there and greens but not to taste them. And it's good to rotate swiss chard instead of just constantly eating kale. Just planted ford hook giant today!

Great video, I grow this variety this year and I am now harvesting. My winter frosts only get down to about -3 centigrade or 26 Fahrenheit so will my chard tolerate this ?
@PlantSmartLivingNOW
@PlantSmartLivingNOW Год назад
Thank you…We are in Pennsylvania zone six, when we get a light frost here the chard can tolerate that… but a heavy frost will make it wilt down. Perhaps you can cover them with a light cloth at night time to insulate them a little.

When planting in the garden if you can do no Digg you will get better plant production because if you really think about it nature does not turn over the mud it simply allows the worms to do that for you and when the soil is turned over and disturbed you break up the animals, bacteria and fungus cells in the soil. When gardening you must always try and think what would nature do do and how can I better that but not modifier. So if you want more worms in your garden put down old vegetable food scraps and anything worms like and cover it with a layer of mulch and before you know it the worms will have turned up your mud while adding worm castings (worm poo).
