In this week by week video, we go through the steps needed to grow Swiss Chard, from sowing to harvesting.
Swiss chard is super simple to grow, and will be happy in a bed, pot or windowbox. They are relatively low upkeep and, if overwintering, will provide tasty leaves well past winter.

@@AThornyPot I have always sown my seed in the morning straight in the garden, does it matter what time of day or is there a difference?
@AThornyPot
@AThornyPot 3 года назад
Each year I sow more and more directly in the ground... Rather than in trays first.. It saves loads of time. I don't know of any reason why time of day would make a difference. Maybe I'll do a side by side test of that for you this year 😊

Late comer here. I absolutely love the step-by-step directions with all the details. Just wondering about fertilizing this plant - what it likes and how often and how much sun. Thank you.
@AThornyPot
@AThornyPot 2 года назад
You'll have the best crop in full sun and can harvest it more often. You shouldn't need to fertilize it but if the soil is poor then you could top dress the soil with some compost 👍thank you for the lovely comment x

I like how you explain how to thin out and how to tell which ones to thin out. Every step of the way is explained. 👍I’d like to try to grow the Ford hook giant Swiss chard leaves.

@AThornyPot
@AThornyPot Год назад
It's pretty hardy and I've grown it both in the spring for summer harvesting and in the autumn for winter and new year harvests

Enjoy your greens folks!!!! The best thing you could ever consume. No wonder the Bible book of Genesis highlighted its value to all creatures.... Genesis 1:29,30 Then God said: “Here I have given to you every seed-bearing plant that is on the entire earth and every tree with seed-bearing fruit. Let them serve as food for you. And to every wild animal of the earth and to every flying creature of the heavens and to everything moving on the earth in which there is life, I have given all green vegetation for food.” And it was so No doubt these fruits and greens are amazing for us, as Jehovah God saw it to be very beneficial for humans to eat them. Keep indulging friends, they are a healthy choice gifted to our bodies by our creator......Enjoy

Hi Karin, thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I need a table or another way of showing the seasons for each region ♥️ I'll add that to future videos

SO glad to find this! I need to try and do this asap. Can the soil be mixed horse manure with some old compost. How do you get the plants out that are all in one hard plastic tray with no sections. Will cutting in a square with a knife around each plant be safe or how to do plse??? I only have basic tools! Thanx.
@AThornyPot
@AThornyPot 3 года назад
The soil can be mixed if the horse manure is not fresh (broken down), it'll add nutrients to the soil. With the seedlings grown in a tray (no cells), I use an old kitchen spoon. Be careful not to break too many roots and it's easier to do when the soil is moist

do you compost the leaf miner damaged leaves or throw them in the trash
@AThornyPot
@AThornyPot Год назад
Good question 👍 if in doubt, best not risk spreading the problem by adding to the composter

How often do you water in those 1st few weeks?
@AThornyPot
@AThornyPot 2 года назад
While the seeds are germinating, just make sure the compost stays moist. Depending on how hot it is, a light water every other day should be fine. After transplanting, give them a water each day for a week so they can root in 👍
