The Toyota Tundra had some ground to make up after the previous truck lasted 15 years. Thankfully, Toyota has succeeded in catching up to the F150, Ram 1500 and Silverado. And today I am going to go over my favorite parts.

The biggest problem I have with the new Tundra is I don't have one in my garage 🤨😏

Wastegate issue has been less than a handful of these trucks and was already checked through the supply chain to ensure there aren't anymore. Second, the cab DOES NOT need to be removed to access the turbos, an experienced technician can do it through the wheel well, it's just uncomfortable for them, but is significantly faster and it's cheaper for the consumer, hints why they keep saying the cab has to come off. Toyota's approved repair plan for those that were affected is through the wheel well. Lastly, I have 15400 miles on my 2022 Limited and I've had no drivetrain issues. Truck is as strong now as it was on day one.

I'll trust a Toyota Tundra any day over GM or Ford's. I have too many friends/family / coworkers with many of those trucks and many various problems they're dealing with. I can't imagine paying some of these prices and seeing my truck multiple times at the dealership

Do you get to site back there and watch who they say is a "experienced" technician work on it like your describe to make sure they are lifing the body off frame to do Turbo work? I think its no on both questions so you have no idea if they are or are not. Get to 150k miles then come back and talk all that.....

1 week with my 2023 Tundra that replaced my 2018 Tundra. I'm 62 years old so the idea of a V6 replacing a V8 hurts my tiny male brain, however, I am aware of Toyotas quality and reliability so that's why a 2023 is sitting in my garage! Of any 2023 Tundra orders out there, how long is the expected delivery time? We're definitely ordering one soon. My Lexus dealer friend kept telling me for months, "DON'T worry about the waste gate issues, they are few and far between and Toyota is ON IT!" He just kept reassuring me like many posters here it's such a small percentage of 2022 Tundras with the issue.

The engine isn't brand new though, it's been the one in the Lexus LS 500. But yeah it can only get better year after year.
@ryannelson8717
@ryannelson8717 2 года назад
Currently at 15400 miles, haven't had any issues with the drivetrain. The wastegate issue was fixed months ago and hasn't been one since May. Only a hand full of these trucks even had the issue, out of the 65000ish trucks made 5 had a turbo. Out of the 430000ish F150s made for 2022 they've had a few hundred turbo failures, HUNDREDS (best estimate I've found is 305 and that's on the lower side of variable incidents) That's almost 10x higher in turbo issues yet nobody even bats an eye at the F150 (also that's total F150 count not just their turbo engine so the actual failure rate of the turbo only ones is pretty significant, like to the point that ford should probably do some quality control.) So if you're scared of the engine, don't be. It's one of the most reliable Turbo engines, plus an added bonus, it's not actually a brand new engine, jut it's first time being paired with a 10 speed auto trans.
@coloradowing8518
@coloradowing8518 2 года назад
AND, I have heard from another source the main difference between the other Toyota and Lexus vehicles with this exact engine, is the Tundra is the ONLY one mfg in America. Now, I'm not against american made cars, but the explanation was likely an assembly line misunderstanding/miscue of a production instruction. A minor difference in production likely caused the possibility of failure, hence a small percentage of failures instead of large percentage. Not my opinion, just something else I saw that made a lot of sense.
@nickforest7816
@nickforest7816 2 года назад
There was just so many 2022 tundras that had the waste gate problem only because it was a new engine for the tundra but the same engine was used in many other lexus vehicles for several years and haven't had the same problems so I wouldn't be to worried If I were you

With rising or high fuel prices that might go up or down. A fullsize truck is turning into a privileged vehicle because of the cost factor. All of the tech and safety regulations put into everything today is driving up costs. Plus the power plants put into these things are like sports car engines. Just my thoughts.

I've had my 1794 Tundra for almost 2 months now and so far, everything is as expected for a new truck...it's perfect except for one thing. My interior is an absolute rattle trap when the radio is on. Even with all of the radio setting (bass, treble, mid) in the default, middle setting, the doors rattle with every song played. This is one thing that will be addressed with the dealer on it's first service. for $70K, there should be no rattles at all. After that is fixed, I expect this truck to last like a typical Toyota...forever.

I get 17.4 miles per gallon in 2018 4x4 double cab 5.7 v8 tundra 2 miles more per gallon to lose all the Toyota reliability that made them who they over over the last 60 years is not worth the tradeoff. Im at 104k miles on my tundra and zero issues. If you are like me then you need these to last 300k miles with as little issues as possible. These will need turbo replaced before 100k and those will cost more than truck is worth at 50k miles let alone its value at 100. Also I like to do maintenance and work myself that can do, Now this will need to go to dealer for everything or a shop and that = more $$.

Let's see.....Consumer Reports says the quality is poor, numerous RU-vid reports detail poor quality, Motor Trend says the quality is very poor, MT compares the TRD to a Chevy and lists a litany of complaints about the quality (squeaks, groans, tinny sounds, off road handling, low range issues, on road noise/handling, etc.) but it's a Tundra which shows people will forgive poor quality if you stick a Toyota emblem on it. At least it gets better than 15mpg which is definitely an improvement.

If I really needed a big truck for hauling or towing, I might be hesitant to go for the Tundra. But the hybrid version's electric assist motor might be taking some of the stress off the turbos, so it could end up being OK. What I don't understand is why Toyota made the turbo standard and the turbo-hybrid optional. I would have thought it would be better to have as standard equipment a non-turbo hybrid, and then offer the turbo-hybrid setup as an option. That way you'd be counting more on the electric motor for additional power, which I would think would be more durable as opposed to a non-hybrid turbo.
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 года назад
Interesting thoughts, I never thought about the advantage of less boost needed. My guess is that the turbo non hybrid is cheaper to make than a non turbo hybrid. I'd love to see that kind of setup though. The 2gr-fks from the Tacoma with the 10 speed auto from this would be a good combo with a hybrid to fill in that engines weak low end.

@felixchien1664 Год назад
Good points since there'd be less stress on the engines without the turbo. I believe the reason is an auto industry improvement. There's a shift with having turbo charger standard given it adds to efficiency. I'd expect more ICE (Internal Combustion Engines) to come standard with turbo chargers. Moving away from the big block v8 to smaller v6 and i4 with turbo chargers

We have come a long way to maintain much cleaner emissions and significantly safer methods or retrieving/mining for oil and gas then our refinement standards are significantly better than the rest of the world. Why would we buy gas from the middle east or Venezuela when they are both not friendly to America AND don't meet outer refinement standards when we can do it all ourselves and have significantly less emissions and environmental hazards?

I have a 2022 2794 am yesterday the light comes on and showing that was low in oil I stop and checked I was verily touching the oil with the dip sticks I add one quart of oil and the light when away but is no oil leak at the engine I wander if the turbo is blowing oil
@Realistick

I'd be surprised if any seals on the turbo already gave way. I'd take it to toyota and start an excessive consumption test. I didn't hear anything about that issue when researching the engine so hopefully the manufacturer didn't get the oil level right from the factory and it only burned a typical amount.

I love my 2023 Limited CrewMax. It's in the Army Green color like yours and it is absolutely gorgeous. I get constant compliments on it. People are way too hard on this truck. V8s are dead and obsolete for most things... get over it. You're only going to be seeing V8s in super large trucks or sports cars moving forward. Imagine comparing a Toyota to a Ford. Sorry but Ford's quality and reliability is garbage... how many recalls are they up to now? I've been in new Ford trucks of the same generation and was not impressed at all by the interior or ergonomics... all cheap hard shiny plastic. My Toyota has leather interior surfaces and will always be more reliable than a Ford even with it's turbos. Don't even get me started on Dodge aka Chrysler. And there is plenty of power for me (I opted for the non-hybrid model). Smooth and sturdy. Also, who buys a half-ton truck and then complains about MPG? I can drive 421 miles on a single tank... not bad at all given the other stats of the vehicle.

@@Realistick Pickups have a substantial markup. They could price it less and still make bank. I doubt a NA V6 would lower the price much, maybe something between $1000 and $1250. While some consumer items drop in price over time...it is of note that vehicles keep getting more expensive. Why is this so? They have the same components largely: stamped body, frame, motor, transmission, seats, windshield, etc. They (manufacturer) shares technology across models (there by spreading capital expenditures across more units). Why so darned expensive these days? I want to say that a 1996 Chevy short bed regular cab pickup went for around $17,000....now considerably more than $30,000!
@Realistick
@Realistick 2 года назад
@@ksorsomeplace I think GM is the worst offender of this and they have outright said it at one point I believe. What you're describing has happened to most cars. The difference with trucks especially is that the base models have grown a ton with features, capability, and engine performance. They have gotten more expensive to manufacture and to develop! Plus inflation accounts for most of that difference. And considering the f150 3.3l v6 is like 1200 or 1500 cheaper than the 2.7 turbo, and that engine is 1500 less than the comparable 3.5 turbo. I think an na v6 would help the price but more so the simplicity. This 3.4 turbo engine is great but I could not imagine working on it.
@ksorsomeplace
@ksorsomeplace 2 года назад
@@Realistick Yes, so have the items that I mentioned: Computing power for one, more capability, but lower price. The inflation has been substantial "what the market will bear" price increases vs. price increases necessitated by increased costs of materials, r&d, and staffing costs. Likely one cost driver is that of the regulatory environment. It would be interesting to note those costs on the sticker :) But, the turbos are outsourced in many cases, so again development costs are spread out over many, many units. The turbo itself isn't a complicated piece of machinery. Relatively few parts make it up. So, on the Ford SuperCrew XLT 5 1/2' bed pickup: The 2.7 is $1,285 (used to be $995), the 3.5 is $2,735 (used to be $2,595), and the 5.0 is $2,335 (used to $1,995). The bed size and other factors change the price of the options (sometimes considerably). What do you consider makes them more expensive to manufacture? Labor, cost of materials, regulatory compliance, design? I would say that, in general, manufacturers try to design the part to be as inexpensive to manufacture as possible (not that this cost savings is passed on to the consumer). My contention is that the we've been designing and manufacturing automobiles for over 100 years. They ought to be getting less expensive, not more due to the combined knowledge and shared components across vehicle lines. It has indeed happened on most cars as well, it is just that the pickups have caught up and eclipsed them. That's the issue. The complexity (I would argue) is mostly in the electronics, not the aluminum, steel, rubber, plastic, and glass pieces. Electronics, when compared to computer components, should be relatively inexpensive to manufacture (outside of development costs, of course. I would still argue those are not that high per vehicle due to shared tech). I'm guessing that many would outright refuse the 3.3L equipped pickups, though. Most want power and lots of optional equipment. Thoughts? One of the most expensive options on pickups is the 4WD option, but it's not easy to spot as it is always baked into the base MSRP! I would argue many buys have little need for the 4WD, but get it because of resale and "trucks all have 4WD" reasoning. Concur?
