reason #2 is so difficult to explain to folks. when you grow your own meat (fish, bird, etc) you will eat less meat because you find other ways that they are useful. its so odd.

@@BrimwoodFarm maybe it's because you see what "meat" actually is and it gives you more respect for the life in general. When you get it in a package skinned ,boned, and ready to cook we tend to forget that it was a living thing. I'm not against eating meat I eat meat, but I can't help but think we've become a bit to detached and spoiled from the process. Just my opinion.

I raise two Bobwhite quail. I’m never, EVER going to butcher them. When I saw in the comments about you talking about butchering them, I was like “nope, not gonna butcher them...EVER!” They are too cute. I’m gonna raise more next year (2019). My male Bobwhite, Peep, almost drowned when he was only a couple of minutes (or hours) old. He had a rough start, but survived. Re-Peep (female), on the other hand, had more of a “less rough” start.

I'm a quail raiser too. I have two major drawbacks with them: that they are so cute which makes them hard to kill and you have to incubate the eggs because they won't do it themselves. I'm thinking about shoving some eggs under a broody chicken to see how they go.
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 6 лет назад
+McDowall Manor I have known broodys to hatch them - not personally - they just have to be careful hens as the chicks are SO Small!
@McDowallManor

I'm about to put a new batch in the incubator, so I was thinking that I have 18 days where I might shove a dozen under a broody wyandotte.
@BrimwoodFarm
@BrimwoodFarm 6 лет назад
+McDowall Manor could be a good idea. If you're worried about tiny chick size and her trampling them you could always pull them into a brooder once they've hatched.
@dogstar8871
@dogstar8871 6 лет назад
we do natural hatches - have to bring the brooding quail hen into the house and keep her crate warm - we leave her with them till they can join the covey in the flypen outside - feed a lot of ground hard boiled egg - they need intense protein - brooding hen needs it to regrow the feathers they chew off her belie before they start eating feed and seed - we find naturally brooded birds make better brooding hens and stronger male fliers for pointer training
@McDowallManor
@McDowallManor 6 лет назад
I can see that after a few generations, natural brooding would really pay off. If I get a brooder, I'll definitely use her chicks as breeders.

So Ive kept chickens in the past with the long term to breed them and eat them. Never happened because I became too attached to them. My roo one day got ill (then passed) and I was left with a hen, so I introduced her to my friends flock and she continues to live her life. I still eat chicken from the butchers but I couldnt get over the idea of eating my own. I then kept rabbits because Ive never personally had any attachment to them but Ive fallen in love with them as well... They are still living and will live out their lives with no intention of being eaten. I *may* try out the quail since I have a spare hutch laying around. ^~^

I'd love to live off the land and intend to buy land , self-sustaining for home and land. Deer, rabbits, turkey, chickens, goats. ...never farmed beforee, though did grow up close to country. I need a man to do it. I just cannot. I'm a tomboy. I went deer hunting as young adult with boyfriend, thinking I could do it, as if for meat, it's natral. To sit and wait to kill an animal is NOT for me. My neigbhor killed rabbits in his yard. Rabbit is VERY expensive. I ate it growing up from my Dad bringing it in on specail occasion. It's delicious. I told my neighbor next time he killed one, I'd take it to skin it, to feed to my cat. So, he called to tell me when he got one. Couldn't do it!!!! No way. That's the last time I've ever considered thinking I could kill an animal or handle the "preparation" to meat ready for cooking. NO WAY. Maybe if I were starving and had no other way to survive. Then, many years later, I bought a rabbit for my cat, intending to switch to raw diet with meat he wouldn't be allergic too. They sold it as the whole and skinned frozen animal! It was hard to even buy it. I took a little meat off for my cat and ended up not going back to it, putting back in the freezer. I tossed it a few months later. I think it was like $18 /lb ten yhears ago. I couldn't handle seeing the rabbit skinned and frozen or handling that full animal! Somehow, I'll have to make a deal for men to shoot and prepare the deer, turkey, etc. The goats will be for milking. The quails sound fun and beautiful to have. No way I'd eat one now that I see how precious they are. I'd love to have their pretty eggs for cooking and hatch quails to sell. Men shoot and prepare, I'll cook, garden, and feed the animals...clean cages, but no killing or skinning and cutting carcasses for me. . :)

We hatched store bought eggs in the incubator. From 8 one was fertile. The chick became our baby. So cute. She became baby of my children and slept with them in their room. She was watching you tube and tv with them, she was drinking from our glasses and looking what we have for dinner. It is very difficult to get supplies in Toronto, because it is not considered pet. We were afraid she will die, because at one week of age she started to have a problems with her feet, she could not walk, so I googled she needed vit. B, so I got yeast, all the possible vitamins and minerals for pet parrots, dove feed. We mixed corn, bird feed, cat food, egg shells, yeast, dry worms, but she did not like it much and was weaker and weaker. When she was very week I got idea to get live meal worms and it was a game change. We put her in glass terrarium with light and controlled temperature 35 to 40 C, every 2 weeks we bought her 1000 meal worms in pet store. She took bath in white terrarium sand box and wheat bran box with worms. In big fig tree pot we planted her feed seeds to get some grass, because outside is half year so f. cold. We gave her everything we could. At age 3 months she layed her first egg, than second and third. The fourth day nothing, so we though she is resting. The fifth day she was nervous, she started to have sounds we did not know and at night she was shaking from krampf pain and cold. She died in my daughters hands. It was heart breaking. All family cried and did not go sleep that night. Our march break was ruined. If I could stop her to lay eggs, we would do it. She was such a cute pet bird, very nice, did not fly away, if she jumped down from the pot, she was standing at our feet like a dog. We could never eat her or kill her. My younger daughter used to have her laying down on her back like a baby and they were watching movies together. My husband used to give her neck rub and she loved it. We were her family she hatched in, she thought she is one of us. Quail is a great nice cute loving thankful friendly pet who will sit with you , she was quiet, she loved to cuddle, she loved our company. She was jumping from happiness when kids came from school, she was flapping her wings from happiness excited getting 3 times a day her 30 worm meals. She is forever in our hearts and when our feelings allow it, we are getting another one, may be two, so they do not feel alone when we are away. Quail should be pets not food.

To those ppl who were horrified to learn the fastest way to cull a quail: when a homesteaders uses the term "keep/keeping" they really mean raising for food. Homesteaders are not sadistic. They raise, with love, their stock because the grocery store ppl BUTCHER WITHOUT CARE, whereas if its quick like with a sharp pair of secateurs the bird doesn't suffer. Humans do better with actual protein, we are genetically programmed to be meat eaters. Its a person choice to be vegetarian / vegan and that's OK too, but homesteaders 9times out of 10 cull their own animals for a better, healthier, and more responsible animal-based diet. Have you ever been to Tesco at 1930 after the evening sales have left the shelf with extra meat that's not being sold?? That, in my mind, is a criminal waste. And much more irresponsible.

Do women not accustomed to killing or skinning and dividing the animal commonly adjust to being able to do it? I want to be self-sustaining with deer, turkey, chickens, eggs, goats for milk, and maybe a few cows. I surely couldn't do it to a quail or even cook it after seeing how sweet they are. Is it common for women to be VERY averse, yet see the logic and more gentle and respectful way of homesteading and living on the land, then adjust to being part of killing the animals and preparing them? I'm cringing even asking the question. I have an Army background. I was brainwashed and gung ho to fight wars. I thank God that I got out and don't have the expereince of killing in war. I really think it would have ruined me beyond repair. I'm not saying animals would do that, not if one is respectful and appreciative. It wasn't until many years later that I realized how brainwashed I'd been and the bold realization of how my soul and pysche NEVER would have been able to handle it. We have 23 vets per day committing suicide. Not only is the trauma horriffic and many doing four and five tours of war (most in history), but they came back to find out they were fighting a murder campaign for Jew Control and Agenda. We have 2 million Veterans Against the Iraq War, who have publicly renounced and apologized. I think that I would have been one if that happened to me toc commit suicide. These poor, young men and women who live the aftermath. They were used as cannon fodder - on both sides of the war. I wouldn't have a problem, though wouldl be tough, fighting for my nation and people against a REAL ENEMY. Jews orchestrated WWII Genocide of Germans, using Jew Control of Ameirca and Great Britain. Germans were 1 in 4 founders of this nation. Germans killed their own tribe. European descendants are ONE RACE - ANGLO SAXON BLOOD ISRAEL. GERMANS ARE THE REAL JUDAH. Those who call themselves Jews are not Judah and are no part of Israel. "Jews" are Edom/Canaan/Cain MUTTS - CURSED OF YAHWAH. I could handle when the time comes being part of annihilation of every Edom-"Jew". THAT is real war. I'd have a less diffiucult time doing that than killing an animal for food. Real necessity and justice for war is the ONLY time wars should be fought to defend one's race and nations and destroy the enemy who is harming and intends harm of one's peopole. Vengeance and Defense is coming. All Jews are traitors and will be executed in OUR WHITE ISRAEL NATIONS.

@tracischeelk29 5 лет назад
@@czarpeppers6250 I never thought I could. The more I get into the dreaming and planning, already loving the animals, I think I may. I'm not saying it wouldn't be tough. I'd surely rather have a man do it, and may arrange for help. But, I might be able to adjust to it. I'm at least much more comfortable by entertaining the whole of the experience - self-sustaining, appreciating and loving the animals, and raising for myself and others. I know that I would be as kind as possible and give them the best I can. I understand what you are saying. I guess that I will find out. I'm leaning toward modest amount of animals, with the majority being plants. Cows and goats would be the majority of the animals if for income. Those would have to be taken out for harvest or in-house. If in-house, likely I'd find someone that I could hire, either living on the land for help or just for that purpose. In the country, there are many skilled and kind people. I know it is shocking for a woman to say she would be able to. I'm more adapted now, but the proof is in the pudding. Likely, I'd get so attached to all of them, no matter how many.

@@tracischeelk29 Nah, it isn't shocking for a woman to say she could. Honestly if it were something I really wanted to get into I could probably get use to it, and it is something I may like to do someday. I suppose the best way to think of it is that the animal has a far better life than the ones whose meat you buy at the supermarket. If I did get into having animals for food I'd probably just start out with chickens for eggs, then see how I felt about doing more. I know my Dad talks about when he was young and my grand father would have to go out and hunt for food. He loved animals too, but it was just what needed to be done. I think my grandmother prepared them. That was just life on the farm in the 1950's. I know what you mean about getting attached though, that would be my biggest fear.

I have recommended quails to them as you really don't need much room at all, and their behaviour is almost identical, except in miniature! Super underrated birds. If you know how to look after chickens, you will know how to look after quails. I think people are reluctant to keep them because they think they are delicate and high maintenance, probably due to the price of them in restaurants.

Just starting my research into quails, after succeeding for years with my chickens, we are now downsizing space from a very large garden to a small garden. In which I will probably stack growing beds on top of there runs, how averse to light conditions are they? I will have the sun-facing but obviously they will always have a roof over there head. The best thing for mites in any bird situation is to use ash from the fire to choke the mites and make sure the birds have lots of dusting space. I even but dust into the spaces between the rusting bars they basically choke to death. I never use the chemical powder either. I will also have a log burner in the new setup/house so will be using ash in their nesting space.

Really excellent point about valuing your meat. We don't do carbs, grow lots of veg but ultimately we still rely on meat from the store. I hope for this to change when we finally get a place of our own, but for now I try and be mindful. I love meat, I love animals, it's a tricky thing.

Jon MacDonald Different people, viewpoints, and cultures. To some people cats, dogs, horses, insects, spiders, even humans are considered possible food sources or capable of producing food products (like blood/eggs/etc.) I raise chickens as pets (started when some 'stray' birds that the neighbor had wandered across the field to our place. Not very humanized till a dog came and killed a ton and injured others and I had to care for them. Then they'd follow you and let you pick them up and carry them. Part of the responsibility of caring for pets includes euthanizing them when they are suffering. I personally didn't do it, but a friend or some of my family did a few for me that were suffering. Some also naturally pass away. I don't eat the meat.

I've had my quail for so long now and she's just amazing, she loves people and she is like a cat. I wish so many people didn't kill quails.. EDIT Guys, please don't make the same mistake I did. I lost my bird some time ago and I'm.. lost. I loved her dearly and she's gone because of my own faults. Make sure to watch your birds around other pets, please.. don't loose your birds like I did. Please, keep them safe.

Slurpy DaWonder I can answer too. I've had pet quails for some years. They don't need to be in pairs If you are bonded with them. They Will eventually get sad If they don't have friends. If I were you, I would get couple of them cause when you're away they won't get lonely. They can be alone for many hours if they have food and waters aroud them. But of course the lonelyless will bring sadness.
@girld1ck
@girld1ck 6 лет назад
Slurpy DaWonder they're not really loud expecially females. They're like budgies. they Make small noises. Males are louder. They do peck things and people If they're curious of something but it doesn't hurt *at all*. They don't need toys but they need do have something to do in their cage. Like sandbathing, eating, pecking, walking, exploring, jumping and so on. Just like any other human, we Will go crazy If there's absolutely nothing to do we Will get depressed and bored. Same thing

mayamachine I use my birds for meat and eggs. I usually eat excess male birds. Pigeons and quail are the easiest but then I love all of my birds so caring for them isn't really a burden. I am 69 years old and working hard is good for me. Bags of grains each weigh 50lbs. I mix my own feed including growing huge quantities of mealworms to add protein to the feed. "Bugs" keep birds healthy. My birds do not get soy and only organic cracked corn in the scratch. All the grains I use are organic. I have added quail since my post. Incidentally, pigeons are incredibly easy. I let them out each morning and they fly around all day. In the evening they return to roost. I get eggs and meat for hardly any feed. Pigeons are great if you can let them "free range." Only my quail don't get to fly around.

When it was time to butcher I used a carton of mint chip ice cream to get the hog in the kill stall and I didn’t want a scared and frightened animal when I take my shot with the bolt gun. To make a long story short. My older hog has an aversion to mint chip ice cream.she knows I use it as a lure.

The plain truth is we don't need so much meat. Much of our protein should come from plant sources anyway. Vegan is a bit extreme and I have no trouble taking an animal life to feed myself or others, but a 16 ounce slab of beef is not only wanton gluttony, it is harmful to the body.
