If you're keeping quail in a small outdoor enclosure on the ground perhaps think about making a mesh floor to keep out any vermin as rats love to eat quail and would dig under walls to get to them.
Nice to see a proper welsh RU-vid channel! Being welsh myself its lush to see :) I'll be incubating my own small quail family soon! looking forward to it, good luck with yours! Looking forward to more videos with tips!
I just stumbled upon this channel. I'm so grateful for you guys putting this out. I have quail, chickens, rabbits, mealworms and I love gardening (way too much). I'll get into ducks for pest control and ferrets for rodent control this year. This video was top notch! keep it up. Greetings from Belgium!
I seen a blog on RU-vid A man said, When putting eggs in a incubator The roundish eggs make female chicks And the the pointed ones make male chicks If you run your finger over the pointed end You should feel like a thorn Which most times too small to see with the eyes He said he has 100% Success rate with this method Because we all want more females
Thanx for the info, I will see if I can tell on my quail eggs. There are lotsa kind of quail though so it may not work on all of them. My friend has 2 pet quail and does not like the taste of eggs so I get all the eggs, good deal for me.
I had to look to the animal kingdom for unconditional love, and its there in every way it could be, at 9 days your incubating eggs are attentively listening to the outside world for signs of their mother, as is their mother listening out for them, everyday after your eggs are anticipating the opportunity to establish communication becoming increasingly more of a motivation thus they feel excited by the idea of hatching. HUMANITY WE ARE BLIND...
G'day from Downunder (Australia). Huw Richards led me to Adam and he in turn led me to your site. Great information from all three sites (I might have to learn Cymraeg) but I'm enjoying listening to and learning from them.
Hi Shinsan!! So glad to hear you enjoy watching our channel! 😊 Huw and Adam are great. I really enjoy watching their channel too! Won’t be a bad thing to do!! Cymraeg is a great language!! 😁 Thanks for taking the time to comment and letting me know your watching the channel from the other side of the world!! 😁
I've been thinking about getting quail for a couple of years now, but want to make sure the foxes, dogs, cats and, now I know, rats can't get them. We already have those black water butts, so it's good to know they can be used for watering the birds (detailed plans for that set-up would be great). The main reason I've stalled is because I'd hate to butcher them, even though having a source of meat would be fantastic.
Do your quail have food and water over night I don’t want to put it in the hutch for mess and rats trying to find out if it’s ok for no food and water over night ?
@@gwenyngruffydd Yeah we keep all our poultry in a pen within a pen, large walk in head height pen is entered and the smaller cages are kept inside there. Otherwise, bobcat, coyote, marten, etc can reach in and yank on their cages. You can also keep them in a lighted room like a garage or shed with a window. One person I know has them in the house as pets since she has no yard. Just 2 quail make me about 15 eggs a week which is like 4 chicken eggs.
Inspired to keep Quail. I never realised laying was confined to those longer days. Great video. Do you think you might get a few eggs before the end of the summer ?
Some people have a light on a timer for four hours starting at 0400 Hrs To keep them laying in the Winter But some people think this is not fair on the quail Not having a break But the only lay for about two years
Thank you, I keep them outdoors in a coop. This will be my first winter keeping them but as I understand their really hardy birds and will cope with a bit of snow and ice as long as they have shelter.
@@gwenyngruffydd thank's for the reply! A bit more questions...Ive been thinking of incubating quails...but where I live we dont really have any starter crumble(the commercial food to feed quails/other birds when they are still new to the world...Should I stick to insects like they would eat in the wild as babies?what did you feed them when your quails were small?
You can buy small game feed. Or pheasant and partridge feed. More nutritious than chicken feed. That’s what I feed ours since the day they came here. You can crush it up more fine so baby chicks?
Lovely video - thank you. I've just recently started keeping quail. I've hatched mine from eggs and they've just started laying (I have artificial light on them too) Beautiful fun birds. Can you tell me what organic feed Adam uses please.
Please be careful feeding watermelon and green leafy eatable plants since their daily protein requirement can be compromised. A little, now and then, is fine. Malnutrition makes them less able to fight disease organisms already inside their bodies, like avian tuberculosis. In the wild they eat bugs to supplement their high protein requirements. As a treat try feeding them live grasshoppers, instead.
My pack of 3 female quails are extremely aggressive to newcomers.. Two young female quails were introduced, and picked and attacked so aggressively that I seperated the 3 from them, in a cage within the cage. I introduce them one at the time now so the young ones get some rest. If it was just some picking, fine, but feathers were everywhere and one got wounded badly. Any ideas...?
How does one test intelligence? conceptualization,, My quail are now one month old and they're just short of the same size as my shoes and in tip top condition I might add , Anyhow they follow me everywhere I go and the instant I take of my shoes there is no pause of confusion at all, they instantly recognize that I have taken off my shoes, this is not the case with all animals that they have a concept of clothing... these animals are not at all dumb and the fact that we fail to recognize their intelligence says more about us than them..
Thank you for the informative video as I'm thinking of getting some quail, can I ask how long do the fresh eggs last and can you eat them straight away? Many thanks
@@gwenyngruffydd Thank you so much for replying as I couldn't find the answers anywhere. I look forward to watching all your videos as I've subscribed. Many thanks 🙂
Interesting talk but I don't think recommending 10-12 quail for that tiny area is a good idea. That might suit the human for egg production but isn't taking their quality-of-life into consideration. We should be making sure captive animal are given as natural a habitat as possible including space for physical activity and mental enrichment.
@@gwenyngruffydd true! I decided against chickens and ducks. Quail had never entered my mind! Now I think quail would work, i don't need to let them in and out everyday, less noise, mateys autofeed creations...Q...average age quail stops laying, goes in the pot? How long can they live and i heard incubated quails dont always have the in built nesting, sitting on eggs to naturally breed. Quails are now a serious consideration!
Hey there! Loved your tips. Can you give me advice on how to prevent the quails from wanting to escape? My quail cage opens up to the top (so like a car trunk) and I can barely manage to keep them from „hopping“ out🫣😅. The cage has got two „separatable“ parts but it is still a whole mission impossible. I would really appreciate some tips! Thanks a lot.👍😄
