THOW owner here 😃. Great video! I have 144 sq ft. I do not have a loft as I wanted all one floor, instead of stairs I have a larger pantry and cupboard underneath that I use for a closet. Without the loft, I have 13-foot ceilings and large picture windows, which I love. My insurance is included in my loan payment. One minus is CLEANING a tiny home. It's harder than the 3 bedroom I used to own. Since the space is so small, I have to move what little furniture there is to clean the floors and it's all tiny spaces that need to be done. Also, it needs to be cleaned far more often. I researched Tiny Homes for 3 years before buying mine (8 x 18). I do wish I had bought one that was a bit longer, but other than that, I love it!

Hi Lisa, my comment is above yours and I'm looking into purchasing a tiny home, but the smallest I looked at was 20' x 20'. I was curious about the general area you live in and what kind of property you found to put your tiny house on. I live on the northern edge of Los Angeles County but I will have to probably go pretty far out to find a property that will work. That's why I was curious about where you landed and if you're near a city like I am. Thanks, Greg

for those of us that work outdoors (foresters/engineers/geologists) we say 'there's no such thing as bad weather just bad gear' .. so invest in really good outdoor clothing and enjoy it !!

As a single retired senior I love the idea of the tiny home concept, both from an efficiency, easy to heat/cool along with space needs in such a sized home would still be adequate. Problem is the zoning/ and finding a place to put such a home that would allow hooking to water/electric and sewage systems. I can see where having two people sharing such a small space could be problematic in feeling cramped. My idea of what would work for me is the main floor would basically be my bedroom as well as my living area and a partial upstairs loft area would be storage and for seasonal use items such as clothes/blankets...... For heat a propane wall mounted unit, a propane cooktop and a propane on demand hot water heater and for cooling a window AC unit of an appropriate size to cool the space would be mounted through the wall. The use of propane would still allow heat/cooking in the event of power outages due to storms as another benefit. This way any failure of a heating/ cooling component could also be replaced for a few hundred dollars rather than a few thousand not to mention that the home would have less of an electrical power need which could reduce the amount of amperage required for the electrical hookup. Kitchen I would want a microwave and a small counter top sized convection oven. Even the refrigerator could be a smaller "apartment" sized plane jane/ no bells or whistles unit. I would think the moisture issues you referred to in another video should be able to be solved during the building process with a little thought put into the matter. It is a shame that governments are not behind promoting these smaller more affordable homes rather than making it practically impossible to legally set them up in more areas or even designed tiny home communities. My thoughts on that is the lower taxes the municipality would collect if a tiny home occupied the space rather than another type of dwelling with a much higher value and tax bill filling the communities coffers. It seem like everything else its the dollars that become the issue in the end.

New sub here. Great video! I liked how you made your experience with living in a tiny home relatable - especially with how you explained that your wife sold one of her purses when you were getting ready to downsize and move into a much smaller space, and it was particularly hard for her to part with. I think many people don't really think about this, and they don't realise how hard it's going be to part with so many of their possessions.

My thoughts.... Freedom = Choices. The more choices that you have the more freedom. I'm thinking .... get a one ton dually with a non slide truck camper. Did you know that you could park this in the middle of New York City? Manhattan to be exact. You just have to move it from time to time. See the shows and nightlife, museums, etc. Next go to Montauk point, get a fishing permit and park near the lighthouse. Go fishing for a week on the beach. It's called surfcasting. Next go and take the ferry to beautiful Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard. Chill out for a few days. Now let's go to Maine or maybe Vermont for a few days to a week. Now I'm ready to head west to my various small properties. These might be small parcels with a deck. Spend a week in each one. Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, Montana, etc. Set up that 18 ft teepee style tent and go "Glamping" on each one. Legal? No but your only there for a week and then gone. Hey... how about Mexico?

I just bought one that should be delivered next summer. I have no where to put it. It is not RVIA certified but it is ANSI with Pacific West Assoc. Havent a clue what most of that means with the exception that I may not be able to rent a space in an RV park and of course will have challenges finding insurance and a place to park. I bought this for the main reason of only living in this area for a couple more years and then being able to move. I've just hit retirement and am trying very hard to live on such.a lower income. It's a bit of a challenge.

I like the idea of living a ´smaller’ life. I don’t have a tiny home but mine is under 1000 sf, with 2 bedrooms. I have a mortgage but it’s not huge. Best thing I did to help with cost of living is get rid of my car. I live in an area within walking distance of grocery, pharmacy, good bus service. I don’t think I could do the tiny home but they’re so cute, I love the alternatives they can provide.

I love how you are taking your life and adapting it to make it your own and save money! It can be hard to do that in this modern world. So you may not have a "tiny home" per say, but i would argue you have the very mindset that many people in the community do. :)

@@usernameisusername Well I’m retired so I don’t use the bus often. What really helps is a car sharing company so I can book a car if the bus doesn’t work for me. It’s a 3 minute walk and the availability is pretty good but you can book ahead as well.

Thanks, Nic and Ben! 🙂 These bite-size chunks of advice and experience really help to clarify the whole idea for me. (Yes, I _have_ also watched the episode advising of things to be wary of!) So, to Finances 05:42 ... Having _much_ lower bills and debts - giving more personal financial stability - sounds very _dry._ It's not. I'm no accountant (or psychologist, 'life coach' or _any_ kind of expert 😅), but I think there's a super valuable and appealing element to this section. *It's actually about how you feel.* Your point about capacity to handle emergencies is _fantastic!_ Having less or no control feels terrifying. Having more control, to cope should something happen, *feels reassuring.* The other part of how we feel is this: Coping with big, complicated, long-term commitments and risks, requires heavy commitment thought and energy, sacrificing time and flexibility of choices - which can easily feel bad. From a home/lifestyle base that side-steps much of those big debt, insurance, property etc responsibilities - you can have more mental *space and peace* in your life. That calm, simplified, stable base means more personal and financial resources so you can: • pursue hobbies - study, be creative or artistic or build things • expand your world - take more breaks from 9-5 job, explore places, travel, change career, study, finally visit your cousins • work in/with/for your local community - volunteer, foster a friggin' neglected animal, be politically active, join protests, fight for change. Y'know - do stuff that makes you *feel more satisfied and effective,* or contributing to the world in ways that the rest of us often struggle to. 😶 Hmmm.... I should put some of this plan together for _myself_ now! 🤔

It is interesting that you downsized your kitchen by getting rid of the microwave. I’m taking the opposite approach. I’m prepping for downsizing by learning to use a microwave as my only cooking appliance. This is going great. A microwave can definitely be used for more than heating leftovers.
@wickedlife
@wickedlife 4 месяца назад
Microwaves can 110% be used in other ways than just reheating food for sure. Thats just all we ever used it for haha. So cool thats how you plan on downsizing your kitchen! We love doing a lot of recipes that call for a stove top or oven, like using a dutch oven for example, and we certainly cant use one of those in our microwave haha.

I think that will degrade the quality of the food you can cook. How does cooking chicken, fish or steak, or whole non fried potatoes work with a microwave? Or are you vegetarian/vegan? I still bet a good amount of vegetables are better cooked at a stove

Thank you so much! I'm venturing into building a tiny house (well, a tiny cabin - it won't be on wheels but skids), and I'm so happy to find a tiny house channel in the Canadian north! I live in the Yukon, and not many folks can address the challenges we face up here. Definitely subscribing.

In a similar situation here! I live in Yakutsk which is quite similar in climate to Yukon. Right now it's -42, but we go through - 50, -60 here. And winter lasts from October to late April. Currently debating between building a skoolie or a fifth wheel. Would love to go with a skoolie for ease of moving it but not sure it can survive the winter.

3:20 may depend on your situation and where. In my case I found its actually HARDER to afford a microhouse than a normal apartment. Id have to buy an untouched lot that the house should stand on (thats around 3 times the price of the actual house). Then pay for the house itself, and pay extra for connecting of things like plumbing and electricity. And on top of that you dont get house loan for a microhouse.

I like how one of the reasons why it's good to live inside a tiny, cramped, prison cell is because it's the only affordable place and it's better than sleeping under a bridge. I like how another reason is you can't own anything because you got nowhere to put it. Those aren't positives, those are negatives. Having less space and less storage room are not positives. Is this about, "well, if you can't own anything and you have to live in a pod, so you might as well try to be happy anyway"? Fair enough, but that's not a good thing, that's putting a positive spin on things, or making the most of a bad situation, which isn't the same thing. The reason why houses cost so much is because the economy is in the toilet, new houses aren't being built, and the system is broken. Trying to make the most of it is one thing, but pretending it's a good thing when it objectively isn't is another. If somebody had infinite money, who in their right mind would live somewhere tiny? Maybe they think mansions are too big and they get agoraphobic, but they'd pick somewhere relatively spacious at the very least. I mean, at least you've adjusted to living in your tiny, prison cell, so good for you for coping with these inhuman conditions, and not having to work 9-5 (I wished I could get a 9-5 but they want experience but I don't got any and how am I supposed to get it when they won't give it to me??) is more important to you than living somewhere humane and liveable, but I see this rise in tiny homes as dystopian and another sign of a reduction in most people's standard of living and I find it concerning.

I lived in a tiny space of less than 500 sq ft for 7 years after my farmhouse fire. I managed but now I’m in a 1100 sq ft house and am much happier. Yes, I own all of it with no mortgage. I had a barn 3 times bigger than my small house! The farm did sell and I moved to another smaller farm more suited to my needs. Less land to maintain and smaller barn, but I love it just as much as the big farm with the tiny house.

I like the pluses of living lightly; having a home that is not a constant burden to pay for; being able to use $ resources in other ways that one values, and/or to work less hours or less years. One would utilize all of one's space and not have unused rooms. I think renting a tiny home is a good idea for those considering buying one. Having a plan in place for locating the tiny home seems it would be essential as it is not widely welcomed everywhere.

Ok, great video (and the bad things about a tiny home too). But how is a tiny home different from an ordinary mobile home? Seems like you have a lot of the same issues, only with a mobile home there are mobile home parks (so finding a place to put it might be easier). Are tiny homes tinier than that? Are they better made?

I agree that tiny homes are good for many of the reasons you speak about but your video is only two days old at this day, 1/10/2024 and inflation is well along in being tamed by the Fed. The US Economy is in better shape than any in the G7. Inflation has been under 4% since last summer and under 3% since September. Prices for some things are down though some may never return to pre-COVID levels. I still can’t wrap my head around a $10 Whopper. A home should be an investment, it’s only good wealth management to have a stable homestead and the best way to do that is home ownership. That said, I would not own a home on wheels. Trailer or RV or Tiny home on wheels will lose value much faster than one built on the land whether it’s a crawl space mounted or on a slab. This implies land ownership or land that’s owned by someone you have a stable relationship with, family or a friend of some years that you can believe will last as your stay extends into time.
