ENGLISH TRANSLATION of the written notes in the video, in order of appearance :
00:04 - Fluting of soundholes wings
00:11 - The fluting of the wings, typical of Stradivari and Cremonese work in general, is done after closing the box so that the arching has assumed its stable and definitive shape.
This is necessary in order to properly evaluate the stiffness of the wings and of the entire area of the C bout channel that would otherwise be misleading in the free plate due to its excessive elasticity.
00:27 - From the aesthetic point of view, the cutting of the wing will have the purpose of lowering the lower part of the outer margin of the stem making it less slanted and with a more similar inclination as the inner margin in the side view of the box, with a more pleasant effect.
During the making of the free plate, the thickness must be kept higher than a few tenths of a millimeter across this entire area taking into account for final thinning.

Nice work and i have a question. If i cut the edge of the wing, to lower it and make it more parallel to the other edge of the F in the side view. Doesn't the bottom shape of F change when looking at the F from the front? I usually cut the F diagonally so that the inside wall is not visible when looking at the F from the front, then do you cut the F at a right angle(90 degrees)?
@DavideSora
@DavideSora Год назад
I cut my Fs approximately perpendicular (90°) with the surface of the plate, therefore inclined with respect to the plane of the ribs (gluing plane), which is also the classic ancient Cremonese method (Stradivari & C.). In this way, the Fs wall thickness towards the Cs will be visible looking at the violin from the front, while the ones towards the bridge will not be visible, because they will be slightly undercut with respect to the ribs plane. The fluting of the lower wings could change the lines of the stems a bit, but if the walls are regular and parallel to each other I would say that it is definitely negligible. However this can be taken into account when cutting the F's if you like, or simply just live with it, if the effect you get is good anyway

I love all your videos, I’ve learned so much, and just watching you work is a pleasure in itself. I was wondering how the fluting of the soundhole wings changes the sound of the finished instrument? Is it something that you can use tap tuning to do? Thanks again
@DavideSora
@DavideSora 4 года назад
The wings of hole F affect the sound, but it is quite difficult to predict their effect. It is a controversial issue, it is not possible to tune them with tapping because the frequencies at which they vibrate are very high, some sort of electronic device with sophisticated accelerometers would be needed, and so on. I don't think it's worth worrying, the risk of a red herring would be quite real. I determine how deep to go with the fluting simply by evaluating the flexural strength, flexing them with my fingers. I know, this requires experience to have reliable reference points, but it is not something measurable.

Maestro Sora, may I ask the size and sweep of the gouges that you show in this video? Thank you.
@DavideSora
@DavideSora 11 месяцев назад
The widest is 18mm wide and sweep #5, the narrowest is 10.5mm wide and sweep #6. It is not necessary that they are exactly the same as mine, sometimes I use a single gouge 18mm wide and sweep #6. The most thorough shaping work is done by the scraper.

David, I would like to ask you what you think about the work of the CM. Hatchinets. I mean chladni figures? Thank you
@DavideSora
@DavideSora 7 лет назад
Carleen Hutchins has contributed remarkably to the research on violins, but her system of free plate tuning doesn't work for me, because it gives as a result too rigid plates. Working on trying to obtain specific Chladni patterns is a red herring which in no way guarantees concrete results, a waste of time in my opinion.

I am not sure looking at the video if you actually remove some of the very edge of the lower f to lower its profile there, or whether you just create a flute to the outside of the edge?
@DavideSora

I actually cut the edge of the wing, to lower it and make it more parallel to the other edge of the F in the side view.

Maestro Cosa sono i raggi delle sgorbie che lei usa per la sgusciatura delle palette delle effe?
@DavideSora
@DavideSora 6 лет назад
La più larga è una Wolf n°5 x 18 mm di larghezza con raggio effettivo di 26 mm, la più stretta è una Henry Taylor n°6 x 13,5 mm di larghezza con raggio effettivo di 21 mm

David, I bought glue in cremon tools, but they sent me the lowest grade, I found out on the manufacturer's website. need glue under number 1, keep in mind, I did not expect that the store will go so indecently
@DavideSora
@DavideSora 7 лет назад
The quality of Nikawa glue is always the same, the difference betwen n°1 or n°3 is only in caracteristics of viscosity and jelling time, I think Cremonatools have only n°3 that seems adequate for many work, maybe for centerjoints a higher viscosity is better but you can regulate the water quantity by trials and see how it works. N°1 is very high viscosity (mine is 11,5, that I don't find anymore even on Nikawa shop), n°3 is 7,5 vicosity, but probably not much difference in the quality of dried glue. Just a thought.
