Hey, Psych2goers! This week is Mental Illness Awareness Week! To acknowledge this, we wanted to post a video about melancholic depression to help raise awareness.
So, have you heard of the term "Malanchonic Depression"? Today, the DSM recognizes melancholic depression as a subtype of depression rather than a separate diagnosis. The diagnosis for someone experiencing the distinct symptoms of melancholia is known as melancholic major depressive disorder (MDD). Also, as a disclaimer, this video is dor educational purposes only. Please do not self diagnose. If you want to learn more about depression, you can also check out our video on concealed depression: • 6 Signs of Concealed D...

You're maturing/changing/growing. You will eventually become so bored that you will force yourself in one way or another, directly or indirectly, move on to new things in life. Or eventually you will discover that never happens, and thats how you know for sure its a symptom of depression
@gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 3 года назад
It can be different things... Maybe you've plateau'ed in skill with the hobby(ies) and aren't sure where to look to challenge yourself with them further. Maybe they are childish (perceived or actually) and you've reached a maturity where it's time to put childish things aside. Maybe your interests have shifted, and you're growing as a person, so the "same old things" feel more like a rut than an enjoyable pass time. AND sometimes, it's just more fun to have someone to participate in said hobby(ies) to inspire and challenge you again... There's probably more. I know I get bored easily... AND there's generally nothing out there that isn't more fun when I can share it with somebody... literally anybody with even a mild passing interest in whatever I'm engaged with. BUT there are hobbies I had when I was younger that just... well... for lack of better terms, they just "stopped doing it for me"... AND I moved on to bigger and better things. At the same time, I've found it's quite often that I would tire of a hobby when I'd plateau'ed and just didn't know what next to challenge myself with... which is another good reason to find someone to join you in said hobby. Not only can they marvel at the parts of the hobby you are truly remarkable at doing, but they can challenge you and let you marvel at what they find easier... They can inspire you to take on new ideas and get more flexible in your creativity... and likewise, you can challenge and inspire them as well. Yes, of course... we're all here to find out about the possible "symptomology" of things... BUT it doesn't have to automatically mean you're in psychological trouble because something has lost your interest. It's easy (all on its own) to reach a sort of "burn out" when you plateau but struggle to find a new ambitious project. ;o)

Had a therapy session with my therapist two days ago and she agreed that I might be melancholic. While noticing my loss in facial expression, feeling dissatisfied with my hobbies, noticeable memory loss, constant emptiness and constant feelings of guilt, I never thought it could be connected to melancholic depression. Perhaps I should bring this up to my therapist for advice in 2021. Wish me luck.

I have to mention this, about a year ago I suddenly started going into depression, and was severely affected by the symptoms. My daily life was almost gone on a pause. I felt to be at the worst level of mine. But as time went through with a series of positive happenings (that boosted me) and my active participation in improving my mental health, I believe that I've recovered from that phase (not completely, but to some extent). Anyone can say, that my knowledge is absent at that time or anything like that, but fortunately today I found this video showing all the similar symptoms that I used to have (and still facing some), which in turn makes me aware of this and help me improving myself more effectively. Thanks, Phsyc2Go from the bottom of my heart.

I have been wondering about my disrupted sleep cycles, always waking up well before I need to (if I had slept much at all), the total monster I feel inside for the first few hours of the day, and how I start to feel more "me" again by the early to mid afternoon (the feelings of despair, hopelessness, and guilt calming a bit).. this video has come the closest in explaining this hell. The rest of it really sound familiar, too. Man, the hopelessness.. hell, the little dude was even sitting in front of a piano. Playing and singing used to be one of my favorite activities in the whole world. It's been about 7 years since I have really been doing that, which is when assault had occurred. So PTSD developed on top of the C-PTSD I already had. My husband complains that I am often slow to respond to whatever is happening around me. Very interesting video... I will have notes on hand when I finally find therapy.

I resonate with this well, to me it's like feelings of euphoria becoming less intense, and less frequent until your entire perception of happiness is brought down, or close to many unhappy moments and very few happy or genuinely exciting ones, I feel like this everyday, I somehow remain attached to the view excitement is only seconds, or minutes away, hours is truly scary, but some people love to be unhappy, and unexcited, for hours, in order to get paid more, or anything at all.

I always felt like I didn’t have depression. I didn’t have all the symptoms. But this relates so much.

I always feel worse in the morning and better later in the day which causes me to invalidate my feelings and doubt myself, thinking I'm just lying or overreacting. I didnt know that was a thing so thanks for bringing it to my attention :)

That last thing really stuck out to me. I often feel awful in the morning/when I wake up around 5 A.M. But later on especially around 12 P.M- 3 P.M I feel better.

Interesting. I think this can happen to everyone throughout their life! I can sometimes catch seasonal SAD in the Autumn/Winter months. I sometimes feel empty also. In the past, like a walking zombie. 🧟‍♀️ Feeling more myself lately. ♥️

How can this be so accurate? As soon as she asked "Do your symptoms get worse in the morning?", I knew it was legit

Thank you! This is me to a tee! Is serious procrastination a symptom or characteristic as well? Because I suffer immensely with this as well I really need to see a doctor but the procrastination keeps me from doing so along with many other things I really need to do! I get really down on myself and can’t for the life of me figure out why or what keeps me from doing what I know I need to do! It’s like my head is willing to go but my body won’t it’s terrible actually. Thank you again for sharing this now when I finally go I can give some input to my doctor and get the correct diagnosis and medications 🙂🙏🏻

It's called executive dysfunction, it seems like it mostly happens to people with MDD and/or ADHD. I have been diagnosed with both, and the stimulants I've been prescribed for the ADHD have helped a ton in that area.

Daylyn H exactly! I feel like it’s some of that too the ADHD I was diagnosed with that as a child but my mom didn’t like the way the meds made me act I guess so she flushed them but that’s a part of my issues too!
