If you're preparing to enter the query trenches, you may have one question on your mind: is my book ready to query? Querying is more competitive than ever, so you want to make sure you're going in with the strongest manuscript you can. Here are a few signs your book is ready to be sent to agents, and some signs it still needs more work.
TIMESTAMPS:
0:00 - Intro
Signs Your Book is Ready
0:46 - Consistent positive feedback
1:32 - You know what you want to say with the story
2:06 - You've done multiple rounds of editing
3:19 - It's within the standard word count range
4:47 - You don't make little changes
5:37 - You feel you've done all the edits you can
Signs Your Book Needs More Editing
6:22 - You haven't gotten any feedback
7:04 - You struggle to write a pitch
8:06 - You can't explain the goals or theme
9:03 - You haven't line edited
10:28 - The book is too long/short
11:38 - You know it's not ready yet

This video gave me anxiety, and a much deeper appreciation for how much work one has to do to get their manuscript ready to query. I don't think I'll ever get there, but at least I know what to expect if I do.

Thanks, another great video. My memory is so bad I always think it was written by someone else who isn't a very good writer. 😄

Thanks - but now I’m so depressed So much work done and I feel I’ve barely scratched the surface. Never been able to find readers that gave anything other than cursory response or editors that criticised spelling but said nothing about plot or pacing. ❤️🙃🤷‍♂️

You need to find the right type of Editor. A Copyeditor or Proofreader will only fix the spelling and grammar. Plot and Pacing requires an Editor who can take a more in-depth look at things. You need a Developmental Editor for that. They won't bother with spelling or grammer but they will look at your entire story and point out to you what is working and what isn't.

@@Martionize Yes ... but I flinch at the thought of trying to find another editor. I've spent thousands and had so little in return. I did ask for a developmental edit but didn't receive that. One editor put me off for months even though he'd been paid - had more interesting work to do? - and I still only received a perfunctory 'form letter' with no indication of what worked or didn't. It hasn't put me off writing, but it has put me off publishing. 🙃

that's part of the reason i'm going the self-publishing route first. i prefer doing most of the work myself and sending my drafts to family or a writing group for review. if i did try traditional, i'd check reviews on certain editors to see how legit they are, but i have no experience in that field at this point yet

Have you tried a critique partner? There are groups all over the web that provide places to connect with other writers in particular genres. Critique partners are writers you agree to exchange manuscripts with - you critique theirs and they critique yours. In my experience, you do it in chunks (say 10k words at a time) so no one gets their whole manuscript critiqued while doing nothing for the other person. Doing this kind of exchange is very helpful, even if your partner isn't ideal, because evaluating another person's writing helps you see your own more clearly.

@@Redskirt Sounds like a great idea. You say there are 'groups all over the web' that have critique partners. Can you post a link? ☺

I think it’s when you send your book manuscript to people in the publishing industry (like literary agents) to try get your book picked up and published.

I took a course with a fairly famous writing coach and was told it wasn't even necessary to finish the book before querying. :/ All the different advice is so confusing.

Your listeners (an old BBC term) will want to watch your reedsy video from four years ago : *7 Steps for the Perfect Query Letter.* Also recommended : *Query Pet Peeves.* RU-vid. Bookends Literary Agency. Ask questions about your characters. Frank O'Connor asked friends of Michael Collins, *How did he behave when he had to have someone shot ?* O'Connor wrote : *It was part of the poverty of our class that we grew up literally on bread and tea and never really felt hungry if we had enough of both.* See *My Father's Son* Frank O'Connor's memoirs first published 1968.

The second quotation of O'Connor's tells us so much about his life and times. Ask the same about your own created characters.
