I bought a nice Dean banjitar at the pawn shop about a month ago. I'm glad that it's so similar to playing guitar. I've been telling my non-musician friends that it's totally different and much harder to play than a guitar so that I could impress them by "learning it so fast". The technique is the hardest part

That thing is just too cool! A friend showed up at a jam session tonight and it blew me away - it was a 6-string Dean he said. I've been playing a guitar for a LONG time and never noticed one of there banjitars. It weghed a good bit more than my D-45 Martin. I reckon I'llbe getting one soon. However, no Bluegrass, bluegrass gospel or country-grass group that wants clean and distinctive sound in their instruments and vocal mix has a place for a banjo strummer. Hi Marty one of the advantages to a 6 String Banjo over the 5 or 4 String Banjo is that you have a Bigger range. Another advantage to the 6 String Banjo is that the tuning is Chromatic, unlike the 5 String Banjo you can play in every Key without retuning, and you can even use a Guitar capo too.

@@partymartyeasyguitartunes1711 Everything written for Guitar sounds great on Banjitar such as Classical Guitar repritore:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-48cn9Ua1qgE.html & even Mr Sandman by the Chordettes arranged by Chet Atkins:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5HLtBVvOphE.html That's why a Banjitar is much easier for kids who are learning to play Guitar, to memorize cause it's tuned the same way. It uses the same strings as a Guitar, in fact you can use your favorite Guitar Strings on it. Tuning it down a half step will minimize string breakage even with the lightest gauge of strings, & is also great if the song is a bit high & you wanna go down a half step.

In terms of ease of playing I will say that the 5 string is probably easier on the left hand(unless you get into the melodic style of playing) than flatpicking lead on a guitar. All you need to really know for 90% of songs are the g chord (open tuning), the C chord, and the D chord. A, Em and F are also highly recommended, but thats it. In order to change keys all 5 string players usually do is slap on a capo, or tune the 4th string down if playing out of C,E, or F but even still all the chord shapes are the basically the same. The right hand however is a whole different story...
@RockStarOscarStern634
@RockStarOscarStern634 Год назад
@@04granadaTrue but the reason 6 string Banjos leave off the Drone string has to due w/ the fact that these were originally meant for playing Jazz (like the Tenor & Plectrum Banjos) so that it would be easier to play in Flat Keys.

@onethumbpicker
@onethumbpicker 4 года назад
As a lefty player as well as a hobbyist luthier I can say that it would be no problem to convert a right handed banjitar to a lefty. Both previous comments are correct but in addition I'll point out that you'll want to either install a left handed nut on the right handed instrument, or modify the existing nut since the string slots will be reversed. The 6th string will sit too high on the 1st string slot since the slot is too narrow, so you'll have to widen it in order to let it settle to the proper string height(about .013 at the first fret with a feeler gauge). The wide 6th string slot will need to be filled, narrowed and recut. Or just buy a lefty nut and install it. In addition sometimes the tailpiece string holes may need to be opened to allow the 6th string to pass through what you may find to be a narrow hole for the 1st string, although I've only run into that issue on old archtop guitars with massive cast metal tailpieces. Neither of these is a big issue. The bridge is a non issue since it's probably a non-compensated floating bridge and just needs to be angled the other way for the proper intonation on a lefty instrument.

@ve3cda
@ve3cda 5 лет назад
The fundamental difference between the Dean 6 string and a standard 5 string (played Scruggs style) is in the right hand and the use of finger picks. So, it's the right hand that is the challenge. There's nothing wrong with using the Dean 6 string, but as a musician, you might want to experiment with a regular 5 string and the right-hand techniques that give it the distinctive banjo sound. You can purchase a reasonable banjo for the same price as the Dean, and there are lots of folks on RU-vid that will help you get started. I will mention that learning the 5 string is a methodical process that requires a fair amount of practice, but well worth it if you like the sound. Lastly, there are other styles of banjo playing, such as clawhammer, that use different techniques. Best regards, Ben Price - San Antonio
