In this video Brad Davis shows how a guitar player can easily become a banjo player by using the Deering six-string banjo. Here Brad will show some rhythm technique using the flatpick and then the flatpick combined with fingers. This is part 1 of a two part video lesson.

Remember - if a tubby, ringing sound is what you're after then the 6-string will work. If you're playing in a full horn band, doing Dixieland or hot jazz then a 4 string _ plectrum, tenor, Chicago - with it's brighter, cutting sound would be better.

Great lessons. Just subscribed. I picked up a 6-string banjo a few weeks ago. Been concentrating on finger picking. Helps on guitar as well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and time.

This instrument was originally used in Jazz because it allowed Guitarists to compete w/ those Blazing loud horns long before we had amplification.

Invaluable lesson Brad! You're spot on with the target-note strumming. I'm coming from a 30s swing band context and Freddie taught us well how 1-note 'chords' with a projecting instrument are all you need - full strum on that beast would be massive overkill. I'm Jonesin' hard for one of those, but will barely afford the base Goodtime model. Question: Is a closed back significantly better for forward projection? Seems it would be. If so, can I retrofit a piece of hardwood on an open back model to achieve that? Thanks again, this is masterful stuff, yet so clearly taught and learnable even for a beginner.

This is quite a loud instrument that you can really hear it over other instruments.

Если ты играл арпеджио на гитаре пальцами, и горя не знал, то с гитар-банджо забудь об этом. Теперь придется все играть медиатором, как металлисту, чтобы инструмент зазвучал! 😮 Спасибо за предупреждение! 😁

Heard of replacing the bottom e and a tuned an octave up. As for the strings themselves, just a matter of finding the ones you like, just you would do the guitar

Oh no, a version of an instrument that's slightly more similar to a different instrument! The horror! Why not appreciate the sheer level of variance available in the music world instead of being a dumbass purist?
