Great addition to the original use of what could have been a specialty ruler. I use it so often for my bindings and borders, as well as the HST. But wait! My favorite use is for QST pieces. When you pre cut the strip into wedges, you save sooo much fabric that you might end up making a twin size quilt top from the fabric required for a throw. Really. I hope you will try the wedges and perhaps add this technique to your ruler use. I cut all the 2.5" snowball or flip and stitch wedges for no waste corners. The square, well it still needs to start as a square, however cutting off the corners first allows us to use our favorite 1/4" foot. Your welcome.

@@CarolThelen I use them for the Quarter Square Triangle (QST) as well. My specialty rulers are the Bias Triangle, Side Set Triangle, Half Rectangle. Spikes and Geese elements becomes easier. Thank you for your tutorials.
@rosemarykriegel3226

For snowballing corners the smaller triangle piece doesn't need to begin as a square. Cut them from a strip of fabric rotating the ruler 180*, while keeping the top of the ruler up, for each cut. This eliminates the triangle waste.

Great demo Carol, and I'm glad you are enjoying the ruler. I also hope that you have converted some folks. I consider pre mitered cuts on binding best practice. This tool is small so that the final join is also effortlessly done. I have a few more tips to share (a/k/a notes from my personal sweat shop). Of course any ruler will allow you to do all of these things, but none have a better size or line of sight/markings than this one for smaller projects. Yes, there is a bigger one, I don't have it. I do have Antler Designs, Simple Folded Corner Ruler (large) That is another great ruler. But it does not have the alacrity of this one. However that ruler has 1/4" marking perpendicular to the diagonal that make many quilting tasks easier. *Binding*: I truly believe that pre mitering is best practice as it is truer/straighter cut and alignment than the 90 degree method (4 points of alignment v. the "am I at right angle?" alignment). No need for separate ruler to square end. Rotate tool. (I glue baste, so I glue the perpendicular long side and match the ends and set glue. That way I can press my seam open. If not pressing open, glue basting the ends keeps things straight under the needle.) *Save fabric*: Cut your replacement corners from a strip (e.g. 2.5") and avoid the leftover waste. Just discard the waste from the original corner you clip. (see my time saving tip below). *Precut Triangles for FPP applications from a strip*: I calculate a slightly (v. grossly ) oversized triangle when needed for FPP applications (I like 3.5" FPP economy blocks). I precut these pieces. Cutting from a strip using this ruler v. a square allows you to work with a small strip width than the prescribed square which may help you use your stash scraps more efficiently. (I also use the tip below) *Save time*: (always make a test cut first). This calculation method works for Triangle in Square Rectangles (side pieces), Split Rectangles, HST's and Diamond Rectangle sides (I have Deb Tucker's rulers, so I use this method to cut the side pieces). (this is absolutely my best tip ever for those that love these blocks and want to produce them efficiently and accurately: Cut *rectangles* first using your normal strip height and a width of strip calculated as height + .75" [(3/8 + 3/8) . 3/8 is the measure of the flat top of tool (to include specialty rulers mentioned above); . Use the ruler to cut the rectangle 1 x to have two perfect mates. Saves rotation and ruler realignment as well as awkward cutting angles. Save more time by stacking fabric. Example: If you need 2.5" HST, you would cut a rectangles 2.5 x 3.25 (2.5 + .75). Align to one side and cut once. Sounds like a so what...but cut your rectangle from 3.25" WOF using a regular ruler, and then subcut with your Stripology ruler @ 2.5". There is no faster way (maybe Accuquilt, but I would propose a dual to test it). Even without a Stripology, you save rotation and ruler replacement on an angle. When you are cutting hundreds of units, there is no faster way to chew through the cutting with no loss in accuracy. Can you tell I love this tool?

What is FPP? Thank you. A duel, eh? I’ll put my vote on my Accuquilt. True, you have to prep the initial fabric but you do that anyway so I see that as a wash. And since you can cut 6 layers at a time it’s very fast work.

Sew with the whole square and you'll have stable pieces. Cut first and have bias edges that are harder to control. Then cut. Better yet, sew both diagonal lines and have two stable triangles per corner.
@CarolThelen
@CarolThelen Год назад
I agree about the bias edges. I am not fond of working with them. I find that using starch works well and for larger triangles I use a little glue in the seam allowance. I do like the accuracy I get when using this ruler. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching!

It was an informative video on the product, and if you don't care about the waste scraps its definitely a time saver...however I was hoping it would reduce the waste and help make larger triangles for snowballing that wouldn't waste half... I probably will skip this product. . .but I love learning about notions and appreciate the time you took and the careful way you explained everything. Will subscribe to see more:)
@CarolThelen
@CarolThelen Год назад
It seems like any way you stitch a snowball is going to waste a little fabric. Using rotary cutting, AccuQuilt or the FCC, we still need to cut the corners off the large snowball square. For rotary cutting we can at least use both halves of the triangle to piece in the corners. Thanks for watching.
