Sidechaining in Ableton's Compressor might seem pointless with better options out there. But in today's video, I show you how to get TIGHT sidechain in Ableton stock.

side note: I'm on your mailing list and get your "mentoring" offer pretty frequently. Charging people for your advice is "consulting." Mentoring is the "sharing" of advice by a more experienced colleague

never knew what the gain knob of the sidechain compressor was used for. This is definitely a game changer as I like using the compressor more than volume shaping plugins.

Good info here. I use an SC channel as well, but a MIDI channel. I drop in a tiny little short rim shot, in simpler, and usually tighten that up even a bit more. I usually match these rim shots to my kicks. I then set it to Sends Only. One thing that has always stumped me... ducking snares or not. I heard some do it and others do not. Ducking for a pump affect on a trap beat is also an art, as you may want it on every quarter or only on the kicks. I guess it depends on what sound you want, in the end. Thoughts?

What's your opinion on the sidechain I'm using. I learnt this technique from Nasko. One thing I don't like because I'm not always producing heavy bass music, is where the snare ducks out just as much as the kick. and on a more chill track I don't want to snare to effect the sub when its not in that low end space anyways. ( Unless its a heavy drop) I wanted more control over my sidechain for cleaner drums. Basically I have a sidechain channel above everything else in the session view and on it I have two instances of kickstart2 in an audio effects rack and all the sounds I want to be side chained are sent to it. All the sounds I don't want side chained are sent to my Pre master. One of the kickstarts are only affecting below 100hz to 150hz (to taste) and the other kickstart if effecting above 100hz to 150hz. I'm using Isotopes Imager plug in (the paid version) to split the low end from the mid/high end because Imager is super clean compared to other methods On the lows I'm just sidechaining the kick to the sub/reese what ever is under 100hz to 150hz using the audio function in kickstart to really dial in the right sidechain for the kick and lows. On the mids/highs I'm sidechaining the kick and snare to the rest of the track but a much tighter sidechain for my kick and snare to cut through the mix also using the audio function in kickstart 2. It doesn't use much of my CPU either as compared to using volume shaper (which would give even more control but kickstart has what i need with less cpu) Let me know if this is a good idea or ways I could improve this :D Its really levelled up my mixes.

Good video, but you might want to lower the volume of the sounds. Found myself changing the volume constantly

that negative delay trick isnt doing anything, ive bounced sidchains for visual reference, it makes no actual difference, wish it did.

Mine too. He should have warned the viewers about the jump in volume between his speaking and suddenly loud music.
