Am I the only one who thinks how crazy it is that history repeats itself according to the times we live in. Here we are listening to a person reading stories strangers sent into an online Reddit account just like before tv people would send letters and stories love notes etc. To radio stations and people would gather around in their homes after school or work or during work hours and listen to these radio stations. Figuring out who's who etc. It's actually cool that it's kinda full circle. Lol, my deep thought of the day I guess. Happy listening everyone .

I'm from the PNW and my dad worked in Seattle. I remember when Sonja was killed and how shaken up the entire PNW was. Many people in the PNW are extremely active, especially on bike trails in the mountains/forests (my family rode our bikes for miles every day). They did everything correctly and it still wasn't enough. Normally the issue is coyotes (they stalk hikers and will kill dogs), so to find out that a biker was killed by a cougar was so scary and sad. Rest in Power Sonja! You did so much for the PNW and we will remember you!

If it was a surprise field trip, how would they have known of this opportunity to sneak beer (I'm assuming the smokers keep a carton of cigarettes on them)? You need to look big cats in the eyes and don't turn your back to them whatever you do. They're ambush predators. Look dead on, and walk backwards SLOWLY without sudden movement. If they inch closer - too close - swing your machete, stick, etc. in the air towards it to show you're not a prey to underestimate, but look it in the eyes.

The second story reminded me of my own experience the Everglades about ten years ago. I was fresh out of high school on a service trip. It was the 4th of July and my group was having a rest day before getting out to work towards SCUBA diving certification again. While kayaking around the Everglades, we were wary of the many alligators in the water around us. Our tour guide had said something about most animal "attacks" being human provoked; in a narrow passage of mangroves, I was trying to turn when I saw a writhing splash where I had put my paddle seconds before. I ended up beaching on a rock close to the turn, relatively easy to get off of and continue the tour; my first concern was for the gator I might have hit rather than my own safety. It certainly makes for a memorable story, or two considering I was eaten alive by all of the mosquitoes that day, the day I vowed never to complain about Northern USA mosquitoes ever again.

Story 1 is why I’d carry a gun if I’m in an area with predators like that. It wouldn’t be the first thing I’d try to do what he did but at least having the gun would be a lot better

2:55 🤣 made me laugh out loud. Seriously though that must have been so scary and cool at the same time, I absolutely love big (and small) cats and it would be awesome to get to see one in the wild, but I wouldn’t want to get between a mama cougar and her babies.

Sonyas story is incomplete. When the authorities went to track and hunt the cougar, they found a bike sitting alone on the ground and a body of a man who had been taken and eaten by the cougar a day or two earlier, dragged behind a boulder, in the same spot along the trail. I'm not sure if the man was ever identified. That cougar killed 2 people but since the mans story is unknown, it's not told or remembered either.

Sonya's story is terribly sad and heartbreaking. But I think cougar should have been relocated or the area should be closed off instead of being shot. Any thoughts..?
@mikerd1994
@mikerd1994 3 года назад
That doesn't make any sense. Why would you close off an entire area to thousands of people because one animal killed someone instead of just killing it? Sure it could be relocated but that requires more money and resources than just killing it. Nobody want's people or animals to die but people have to come first.

Didn't they say something was wrong with it?? Maybe it got rabies, plus it got the taste of human blood and would probably find it way back to a populated area .

They should have done nothing. It was just a starving animal trying to feed itself! They should have just stayed away from his territory!

For story 3 it makes sense to kill a mountain Lion that brutally attacked people but at the same time it’s fucked up because at the end of the day that mountain Lion is a animal and was acting on its instincts. Instead of killing the animal I think it would’ve been better to tranquilize it and then relocate it somewhere where no people have a chance at getting without using a helicopter or something, still that probably would’ve been fucked up but it’s still better than killing a animal just for acting on its instincts
