In this video, we take a look at a do it yourself video fixture featuring 4 Quasar Science 4' 3000k Q-LED bulbs. These LED lights are great because they do not flicker, have a high CRI and TLCI value, and when combined, all four 30 watt bulbs create a powerful 120 watt light that is very comparable to much more expensive Westcott and Kino Flo LED lighting packages.

These lights are fabulous. I have four of these that I use almost daily. They’re extremely durable and so far have been incredibly reliable. I’ve had them for about a year and just throw them in the back of my truck and they still look like they’re new. These are highly recommended.

Great minds think alike! Basically everything in this video is accurate, because I've been doing exactly this for a while with the daylight Quasar T8s. But for video, you need a specific dimmer to minimize buzzing. Standard dimmers work fine light-wise, but to keep the tubes quiet, you need something like the "Lutron Credenza C.L Plug-in Lamp Dimmer for dimmable LED, Halogen and Incandescent Bulbs, TTCL-100H-BL" which uses a different method for power dimming so the LEDs don't produce a distinct buzz. My next upgrade to the "board with those clips" is to get some black plastic material called "coroplast" to make a Kinoflo-like folding enclosure which can manage spill and hold a diffusion frame a bit out from the tubes.

Hey fStoppers! How do you guys rig your lights to a battery? I have a v-mount adapter for the RGBx lights, but not sure how to get the Crossfades to run off battery. Do you have any suggestions?

I have the exact same kit. They are fantastic! I used the same type of clips, but they failed within a day of use. I just ordered the clips that Quasar sells hopefully they'll work. The lights are super durable. I have dropped them many times, and they're still working. A great way to transport them is to use a gun case.

Curious to know about the Quasar clips. If you watch carefully, one of the clips broke while filming this video. At $.20 a clip, it wasn't a big deal and Keith wound up adding another row or two of clips to hold everything even tighter (and give a sense of redundancy). If the Quasar clips are much much better then that's what I'd probably buy when we pick a few of these up for our studio. -P

I have 4 of the 4' and 2 of the 2'. I rigged them in groups of 2 and use them all day long running them off of a couple of vagabond powerbanks. I mostly use these outside for shooting seniors mixing still and video seamlessly. Hey thanks for the extra setup ideas too✌️

I needed 6 of them for a Pride video, I used gels to color them rather than spend 4x as much on the RGBs. I wound up buying 8 since I figured I could fill a pair of 4-tube banks, but your DIY solution is much better.

Patrick, good to see you back in good health. Can you give us a light output comparison of those Quasars vs the Wescotts or other LEDs you have available? My biggest gripe with LEDs is the massive falloff. They are way worse than Kino-Flo's but some manufacturers make up for it with fresnels.

I don't have both lights in the same studio anymore and I didn't have a light meter at the time. The light output seemed very similar between the two with the Westcott Flex being just slightly brighter (but still softer because of the width and diffusion material). Having 5-6 bulbs might have made the Quasar softer and equally bright but then it would add $150 more plus be heavier. -P

David and Keith both held them up with their hands but if you had 4 of the clamps in the description, you could easily mount them to 2 lightstands. -P

Just wondering is I haven’t watched whole video maybe you will explain it but is there a reason for these bulbs specifically? Is there a reason cheaper bulbs won’t work?

Usually cheaper bulbs are fluorescent and flicker really bad when your shutter is faster than 1/25th. That's why you can't easily use overhead lighting found at Lowes or Home Depot because the bulbs flicker and also have a green tint. At $75 a bulb, these are def the way to go. -P

@@FStoppers flicker issues are eliminated with fluorescences when using proper ballasts that have pure sine-wave. That's why Kino-Flo ballasts are $400+.

There's a tiny adapter that's $10 that will hold the light and give you a quarter 20 mount.

shadai perez have you bought them? I assume you need or want 2 of those to hold your lights properly. That’s $80 just on clips for one of these lights! -P

@@FStoppers well I actually ended up going with the HOT ROD CAMERAS single t8 LED tub mount. It's $35 per light to mount it properly. The clips work but did not feel to safe lol. I just got one because I wanted to make sure it was going to work.

Even cheaper, find a broken TV. Disassemble the whole thing to only keep the diffusers and the other panels and throw away the LCD. Take out the lighting from the TV and out in your own 12V led strips, more strips more brightness. Put all the panels back on in the right order and Bam you have yourself a soft daylight panel
