General Thimaiayya had the foresight to understand that the domestic politics of Indian democracy will be no match for the Chinese autocracy, hence his idea of dealing the Chinese through negotiations still hold valid as of today

General K. S. Thimayya was an experienced, successful, combat officer in WW2. Like him in his day, the best of them become very protective of their lower ranks who are trying their best and often dying horrible deaths for a hundred different reasons no one stuck at the front can get corrected. When they finally close in on the source of their difficulties, they seldom mince words.

The truth is that after the coup in Pakistan, Indian politicians were scared that the Army in India may do a similar thing as all the Generals of both armies were actually comrades before partition. Hence the systematic degradation of the Indian Army by the politicians. Please remember that against all odds the Indian Army has remained the last bastion of the country and has not failed its people. Please talk about the soldiers who fought to the last bullet and man.

The entire responsibility for 1962 defeat goes to Nehru. He made VK Krishna Menon defence minister and promoted intrigues among top military commanders via PN Thapar , the worst soldier India has ever had. In turn Nehru had a very unpleasant end of his political life.

I know Krishna Menon played his role in lobbying with the British left during the war years and may have influenced Clement Atlee and his Labour Party, but as defence minister it was the pits. I wholeheartedly would welcome changing the name of Krishna Menon marg. As an army officer's daughter, just the thought of this man as India's defence minister is revolting. I am surprised to know that Gen. Thimayya was confiding in the British High Commissioner in Delhi, but for most parts, I am grown up with tremendous admiration for the man. Poor quality political leadership lead to poor quality Generals who realised that the way to ascend to next level is through politicking and back biting. Thank you for a most interesting story about our motherland’s history. I couldn’t help but draw analogy with the startup world.. when everyone is just driving various functions of the business in their own manner. There’s chaos, personnel choices are driven largely by the personality/proximity/like ability of the founder(s). And those personnel bring in their own style of processes, rules (or lack thereof) till such a time the startup matures sufficiently. Until that maturity is achieved, the mission/vision document (constitution, in case of the country and government) is simply a cosmetic document although put together with greatest passion and sacredness. I’m glad we’re in the highly evolved phase of our country now and can reflect and critique and learn from the past… hopefully good lessons will come out of the past! 🇮🇳 🌎

If Thimayya indeed said Indian Army cannot protect India from China then he is not only the worst chief of Army but also the most incompetent. The British left behind a massive Army which was primarily used to subjugate the natives and fight colonial wars. In 2nd world war, British India Army was the largest all volunteer Army. The Chinese didn't have an effective airforce in 1962 and the infrastructure to supply troops over the vast inhospitable Tibetan plateau were rudimentary at best. China could never win any long drawn battle with India purely for geographical reason. This is true even today with massive Chinese infrastructure across LAC.

Yes Indian army was strong however the logistical problems caused by changing equipment precurement from britain to soviets done by Krishna Menon had reduced our air power by a lot then there's also the fact that Menon had also caused havoc in the officer corps through his political appointment we won't be fighting at the seas. In 1962 chinese economy was almost equal to us but where we were spending less than >2% of our gdp on the military the chinese were spending upwards of 10% and Nehru Menon were not going to let the military fight by themselves not to mention unlike China we had to worry about pakistan we would essentially have the north east completely cut off and lose kashmir as well as parts of punjab. Of course in reality Pakistan never invaded but you still have to account for these things.

Mr Gupta, this episode confirmed to me a long held suspicion I had about the High Command of the Indian Forces; imagine a General moonlighting for a newspaper, another sharing classified information with a British diplomat, a third bad mouthing his colleague, you name it, the perfidy of these individuals is mind boggling. That was in the 1960s, has it changed? I do not think so, the individuals at the helm of the Forces give me the impression of being careerists first and foremost and soldiers somewhere down the line. Otherwise, how can one explain a General suing the Government because of a dispute about his retirement age ? Or imagine my consternation when I was visiting India a few years ago and a school friend of mine telling me that two young men from the North of India had come to his shop asking for a job as watchmen; he did not have one, but, seeing they were really fit, asked them why did they not join the Forces. With a wry smile they said - Sahib, it takes a baksheesh to get accepted (they mentioned the equivalent of over a year's salary, an amount I forget now)!. I could not believe it. Imagine the impact of this on the morale! of the Jawans! If this is the prevailing culture, it certainly does not stop there rather, it is reflective of a profound malaise that is gnawing at the entrails of the organization at multiple levels ; and that clubby culture you mention, it is well and truly very much alive, i venture. It pains me to say this. I hear - Oh, now we are better equipped, etc, etc! It is a fallacy Morale MUST come first, materiel ,training and the rest, follows. Thank You.

in my opinion when Krishna Menon was high commisioner of India in London Chinese ladies were frequently photographed with him . Could it have been a honey trap because after he left London he had become India born china foreign minister .he was a bachelor just like his father as one Indian army general stated .

Menon was a disgrace. Nehru had delusions of grandeur re. China. India continues to suffer this debacle. The general talking to the BHC compromises security as the UK is selfish then as it is now. Governance was at failure. Has the Indian system learnt? A shameful period of India. China recognised this and played their card. This continues today.

All the responsibility for 1962 debacle lies with our worst PM Nehru. His tean like Menon were equally pathetic. Govt never supported Army by providing necessary equipment and manpower. It is unfortunate we still celebrate Nehru. This guy was also responsible for Kashmir and NE problem. Stop supporting congress party and support Modi.

Nehru was a good intellectual activist but not a cunning leader who can make shit done .. whether on economic front , city planning , educational institutions, R&D and military. This country failed in all aspects since 70 years of Leftist-Congress alliance.

Very lucid and clear. I still feel Maneckshaw did not deserve to be the chief and he won the war on the back of Lt Gen JS Aurora. Also, you should have highlighted that Thimayya became chief after superseding Two Sikh generals. This is important and shows a subtle undercurrent against Sikhs at that time. Otherwise well done.

Mr. S. Gupta has completely overlooked the rumour of Krishnamenons liasson with a Soviet Union secretary who had informed him that Chou enlai would attack India but Menon chose to keep this fact from the cabinet and even Nehru. Menon knew of, from his lover from the Soviet union high commission a secretary in Britain when Menon himself was the high commissioner from india to Britain, these are rumours from that time, some saw the light of day in the papers but the rest was suppressed. But as per allegations menon knew of the chinese attack at least 6 to 8 months before it took place but did not report back to his masters in Delhi. As stated these are allegations never delved into. S. Gupta as a serious journalist can do so or should do so.

Shekhar, the topic of the video shows you are to discuss about the guilty men of 1962. You have only discussed the army generals. Let me tell you such petty issues between the generals do not lead to loss in war. Actually, during war there are many more issues which come up but after choosing the final course the issues don’t remain to be important. Example is the obedience of the officers to General Kaul, despite disliking him. And you ‘lose in your ears’ - please translate the Hindi idiom to understand this, I couldn’t recollect an equivalent English idiom. You are carried away by some unimportant books like the book by Jairam written to cover up themselves. The real guilty people were Kaul, Menon and Nehruji come up with that if you can. It pains us to write to you in these words

1962 a crazy year. both china and india anexed land (tibet 1959, goa 1961), they looked at himalaya when nepal placed it current flag in constitution , nepalrecieved first trade blockade from india, british responded by making nepal king field marshal of entire british army year 1962. china invade india the news recived by neru in kathmandu nepal (for diplomacy as his goverment did the trade ban), india krisna meon went to uk to solve any issue. India just ended Portugal rule over goa (451 year history). So internationally if india can initate war , it can also defend. the mindset was crazy .

They were much wanted to become World's Statesmem personalities added the top military brass was anglicised and elitist rather than being battle hardened war shrewd General's. What a perfect cocktail for failure.
