I don't even work in trucking - never have - but even _I_ knew the recent reports of a "trucker shortage" was a lie. All you have to do is listen to truckers, and they will tell you that this is a constant narrative that's been put out for years to try to get more out of truckers while giving them less

Load of BS, the empty containers do NOT sit on the trailer. When an empty is brought back, it is taken OFF the trailer and stacked. The driver then gets in line to grab a new full container. The driver transports it and returns with another empty container. The issue is all the empties clogging up the port, making it take 3 times as long to retrieve a full container for loading onto a truck. The only solution is to set up a "staging" area on adjacent property, to stack the empty containers in groups (Hapag-Lloyd has their empties together, Evergreen has theirs together, etc.) Once the empty container situation is dealt with, the ports will be back to running 3 loads per truck per day. My reference is not a trucker, but someone who works in the ports and has a deep understanding of how they work. See for yourself ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QNVacUza2J4.html

I read an article the other day that the shipping companies are also making money. By not letting the truckers return the empty containers to the ports. So that they can charge the companies late rental fees that have rented those containers. Then those companies will charge the poor trucker a dunage fee for not returning the containers that are on the chassis. So now the big shipping companies like Mesek COSCO etc are making money on the front end by charging 15k to 23k a container and making money on the back end by charging late fees not accepting the empty containers. This all boils down to the top 9 container shipping companies which control 80% of the world's containers greed and blaming the trucker for it.
@davidalexander828
@davidalexander828 2 года назад
@Jessie Morris You are talking about the ports trying to charge the shipping container companies. I was talking about the shipping container companies themselves. Which has made more profit in this year alone than all the previous 10 years combined. 2 years ago it cost 3k to rent and ship a container from China to LA. This year it cost anywhere from 16k to 23k per container.

It's not just the port its EVERYWHERE. I do LTL in the city and essentially pick up all the freight that goes on on OTR driver's trailers. 1 skid there, two skids there, etc. Small shippers? These guys sometimes have me loaded before I even get a chance to put my wheel chock on. Big shippers? 30 minutes to get through security, another 15 minutes to go inside and get docked, and then possibly 2-3 hours to deliver/pick up 2 skids. One time I was at large produce place for over 3 hours to deliver 2 skids . Dispatch got pissed off and said forget it, get out of there and get the dock workers name (they are going to bill them for wasting our time). I go to the back and there some kid there maybe 18-22 years old on his phone. I ask for his name and he gives me attitude (knowing hes going to hear about this later). Trucker shortage my ass. The shortage is at the warehouse. Some of these guys have 30 doors that are full with 4-5 people to service them. I get paid hourly so I really don't give a shit but man if I was mileage i'd lose my shit.

There never has been a Driver shortage! If there was I could name my price. What there is is turn a over problem for the mega carries because they treat their drivers like crap! They want to import cheap foreign drivers for their bottom line! I don't even look at the Swift/Knight , JB Hunt to Schneider load boards anymore because they don't pay worth a Damn! $4.00 a gallon fuel I will not take the same rates I did a year ago! If I can't make money and maintain my equipment I just as well park it. I just spent $5000 today on tires slack adjusters new S-Cams and bushing for my trailer! Once again you have the Government picking winners and losers! As an owner operator I get an out of service for a single brake out of adjustment and I only get inspected every two years that puts me at a 100% failure rate! It is as unfair as it can be! My equipment is better maintained than any mega fleet equipment. I know my equipment I pull the same trailer every day and drive the same tractor every day! I can feel it and hear it if something is wrong.

@MNGirl96
@MNGirl96 2 года назад
Yeah, if everything is on pallets. I worked receiving for years, and we hated seeing the big semis coming in with several thousand loose boxes (Christmas decorations or Sterilize and Rubbermaid shipments were notorious for that). Hours spent sorting the boxes onto pallets and pulling them out of the container. If it was our contracted OTR company, the driver would just drop the container and take away another container, but the independent drivers had to wait until we got done.

Good truckers wont risk their record and safety over an upset 4 wheeler or getting somewhere faster. They rarely care about building up a traffic jam on the freeway. They will happily block the entire highway passing another trucker for 10 minutes because they want to go 1mph faster at 66. This driver shortage stuff has been going on for years. the ports have been a headache for years also. what there really is, is a shortage of decent pay and conditions for drivers to want to stay in the industry. The trucking industry is a giant meat grinder. Fresh meat at trucking schools in every state. Trucking Companies have an almost 100% turnover rate. I heard enough horror stories from drivers who went to the ports, so I made sure I stayed away from such abuse. NAFTA and relying on the Chicoms was a bad idea brought on by greedy corporations in search of cheap labor and few if any regulations. We need fresh thinking on this.

The other issues not talked about, are the fact that Covid forced a lot of van/ refrigerated trailer manufactures to shutdown/ slow down manufacturing. This in turn caused a shortage of newer trailers to customers and low/ no trailers pools available at distribution centers. Lack of personnel to load/unload trailers in a timely manner, has slowed the chain as well.

All of the ports of Long Beach and LA are artificial. The same can be build just a few miles away in Mexico - with no unions, efficient regulations, lower costs, more willing labor. Hey Mexico: give China a call. They can come in an build you a mega-port in no time. Then you'll be up and running, collecting fees, and still be cheaper than Long Beach/LA. Everybody gets what they want: Mexico gets business, jobs, and money. California gets excluded (apparently what they're striving for). And the rest of America get their stuff!!!

There's a channel that I have been watching from a trucker from Florida: Just-In-Trucking. There's a few things that I've noticed. Some facilities make him wait hours. Those are hours he could be spending on the road making money and transporting goods. As a result, there are a number of facilities he just does not want to deal with. He also makes a strong point to the effect that truckers need to know their worth and know when to stand their ground on a price.

Personally, All drivers should have the right to sew the ports and media for defamation, and create a class action lawsuit.
@davids4063
@davids4063 2 года назад
Why? A trucker shortage is not defamation of truckers. It's not a truckers fault that more people do not choose the same profession... nobody thinks that. If anything a trucker shortage raises the reputation of truckers.

Its not a booking situation. Its a direct result of a process called JIT (just in time) were companies reduce warehouse space to minimize stock on hand. This is a direct objective to improve the bottom line. Things are not kept in stock any more but are only used as needed. Essentially the ware house space has been moved to ports and elsewhere. The big flaw in this process was exposed through the pandemic. I have never seen this process work in the 45 years I have been in manufacturing. And was exposed for the flaw it is thru the pandemic. I use to work for an OEM supplier that uses this process. I've watched them spend 25,000 a day when they were late on shipments to GM, Ford, and Chrysler because of the JIT process.

Ok, stupid question for these ports.. If you have so many empty containers you have no room how about sending them away from the ports to be stored? Or if the containers are worthless how about you grind them into metal shavings right there and recycle them?

My question is who is going to get stuck paying the demerge on the empty containers? With most of the steamship lines if they're not returned within 7 to 10 days they start charging a demerge usually to the receiver

They could of saved a lot of time and money, by going straight to the source - the truckers who actually see and deal with logistics and transportation everyday. Instead, out of touch assholes chose to blame it on truckers. They always look to place blame on truckers. Whether it’s a late delivery … because the brokers or dispatchers sat on a load for too long, or were too cheap with what the load pays and nobody accepts it until they finally offer what it should of paid out in the first place… or there is an accident with an aggressive four wheeler - it’s always “the truckers fault”.

My boss and I was talking about this a month ago. Can't find chassis and our trucks are not allowed into California because of emissions. Rolling hard in pre ELD Pete's. But yeah I can see booking be a issue too. They need to loosen regulations and put the hammer down. Really don't see it happening though. Good money to be made if they'd get their shit together.

Today, since trade is mainly one-way, it is not economical to send the containers back empty. What some steel company has to do is set up a deposit dump where empty containers that are damaged or otherwise unusable can be scrapped and the steel recycled into useful steel forms. Container recycling can be a business of its own much the same as scrapping ships by the breakers.

According to port regulations, trucking companies have to make an appointment to pick up a container off the dock. Trucks need a chassis, which are hooked to the vehicles, to collect the import, but unless they bring an empty container to free up the chassis, they’re unable to move the import. It’s a shortage of productivity and efficiency, not drivers and trucks, that’s causing the supply-chain issues, and that the problems with empty containers are becoming worse. "Our biggest problem by far is empty shipping containers," Matt Schrap, CEO of the Harbor Trucking Association, a coalition of intermodal carriers serving America's West Coast ports, told Xinhua. "They are the bottleneck that is sinking the global supply chain."

So real life question time. I've been recently thinking about changing careers and getting my CDL.. like my game plan was going to be within a few months time... I currently fix copiers and genuinely hate it, am tired with it, and TBH not great at it as I really just dont care anymore which makes applying and learning technical things even more challenging... Is this even something I should consider anymore? The best part of my job is not fixing copiers, its the driving and I currently go from MD to PA daily, couple hundred miles easy. Baltimore to Harrisburg to Lancaster to Hanover to York back and forth back and forth then back home. I've always enjoyed driving..... Thoughts????? Thanks in advance for honest insight.

Now when trucks go to the ports there not picking up just any container. Most have to pick upba particular container as requested buybthe company to fulfill there JIT needs. At times the crane operaters have to move 4 containers to get to the one they need that is to be picked up.

I've been driving trucks for 27 years, and saying there's no driver shortage in America because of an equipment shortage at the ports is ludicrous. Though a tremendous amount of freight comes in through the ports, it's only one gateway. I'm based out of KC, and the lack of experienced drivers to haul freight to and from rail yards, manufacturers, fields, LTL, and other areas is overwhelmingly evident. Get out of California once in a while and it's easy to find.
