I had the exact thing happen with my 96. The burner bell was not transferring sufficient heat to the vaporizer tube to gasify the paraffin. It fit loosely so there wasn’t sufficient metal to metal contact to transfer the heat. The solution was to add a shim. Bernie dawg has a video on how to do this. I used a beer can with the paint sanded off for the shim material and it worked great. To confirm that this is the problem, point a butane or propane flame at the vaporizer tube while it is burning to see if that stops the liquid stream of fuel from shooting out the vaporizer tube jet.

Before using a 60 year old stove I renew all seals and washers including pump leather and removing the non return valve and replacing the lead washer and the pip/rubber. A special tool is required to remove the NRV. Once that is done remove the lipstick, empty the tank, fit the tank cap and tighten the filler cap. Now give the pump about a dozen pumps and submerge in water. There should be no bubbles. If there are, note where the bubbles are coming from and take steps to remedy the leak. If all is OK then try a test run.

use the pricker to clean the jet and renew the seals. These stoves are bullet proof.

Come on dude, you need to do a remake of the #96 stove in action. In addition to using the small wind shield to get and keep the lipstick vaporizer hot, you need to get wind shield for the stove. Can prop up logs or purchase a metal foldable wind shield. Enjoy your outings and humor with fellas.

Ahh shame, I was all excited, not seen these before, it's great to see vintage gear, at least it partially worked to get a feel for what it's supposed to do. Love that it's volatile and trying to kill you as you'd expect with old gear, it didn't disappoint 😉

HI, looks like the elements were against you, using the wind shield will help the meths heat the burner properly so that the paraffin gasifies correctly, then you can balance the pressure from pumping. ;) The meths flame needs to be as vertical as possible. keep the air valve closed once pumping begins. To turn it off, open the air vent, this will release the air and pressure and extinguish the flame. Good luck, and thanks for sharing.
@mdmoutdooradventures

I think you could be right as this would explain why it was working perfectly at home

We had these in the Scouts in the 80’s, and getting the ‘head’ hot is critical, along with clean jets or you get fire balls spat out the top…. And makes sure you are not losing pressure by a minor leak somewhere….. once they run they are awesome ! I remember a few of us burning eye brows and fringes in the scouts learning to use them ! Happy days !

U done all correctly, mst probably the stove is dirty, also the main tank. The other may be fuel, but doubt it. Also as others mentioned in other comments try using wind shield, those stoves are fragile for wind. Other than that no need to apologize, great video and i would really like to seee You using this great piece of history once again :)

Change the filler cap seal and non return valve seal as it will probably be old and brittle so is leaking air and depressurizing, pump to much and you fill the burner tube (lipstick) with raw paraffin so you get the big yellow flames.
@waltersnowdon1243
@waltersnowdon1243 Год назад
I have this same year and model from new in 1962, still with its original seals etc. I use it regularly and take the pump apart and oil the leather pump head which keeps it supple and gives a good seal. it has a lovely little 4 sides folding windshield which keeps the lipstick tube good and hot in windy conditions. the set originaly came with a small screw cap tin for the meths. I much prefer it to modern gas burners.

Hi, there's a lot of.helpful information on 'Spiritburner' the classic camp stoves website. Your stove is fitted with the earlier cast iron burner plate which was changed later on to a burner head with a brass crimped on burner plate for safety, you wouldn't want a cast iron burner plate falling off in use??. Leather pump washers and the required seals are available through this site. Definitely worth following up. I own a pre WW2 Primus 96 which required a replacement lipstick during the rebuild process.

Beautiful stove, I have a similar but smaller, backpack size stove, need to find a tin for it. My guess is that with yours, the fuel is not atomizing properly, perhaps due to low pressure in the fuel tank or partially clogged nozzle. Check the seal at the fuel tank cap and at the pump plunger, and/ or check ball/ valve. Don't give up on it, you'll get 'er running smooth. I use 'white gas' (Coleman fuel) and a small welding tip cleaner to clean the passageway and nozzle. Do check the wick, as you mentioned. I don't use mine much, I got it for $5 at a Christmas bazaar and just like having it in my workshop. I should fire it up again so it's ready for the next outing. Thanks for the walk and look at your new/ old stove, nice find!

simple fisics the out side air is calling things down so you no longer have anuff tempitratcher to keep the kerasene/paraffin vaperising they have to be kept out of the wind or breez the slowest drop in temp and karesene/pariffin will stop vaperizing and you will get liquid shut up and cards fire ball

Normally, when stoves like this are not hot enough to vapourise the fuel, it "flares up". Yours didn't seem to do this. I have got an old Optimus stove of the same vintage as yours. I might just get it out for a play!

I'd try to clean the lipstick. Sounds as if it may have some buildup in it that is restricting the flow of the gas vapor, which could have prompted you to over pressurize the feed chamber.

Looks like the cold weather has massacred the stove the extra pumping has caused the spitting, the 1962 tec has shown its ugly head the 1962 is a nice show piece MDM on how things were back in 1962 . MDM .
@mdmoutdooradventures
@mdmoutdooradventures 2 года назад
Was all due to me not using the wind shield around the burner while the meths heated it so it didn't get hot enough for the gasses to burn correctly and in so doing so had to pump it more and like you said that is what caused the spitting . Lesson learned for next time , no matter if there is no wind use the wind shield to pre heat the stove . Tested it at home again and its working fine .
